On this day 50 years ago, people lined the windows and doors outside their local Ford dealer in the early morning waiting for the curtains or paper covering up the storefront to come down. For the previous nights before, Ford had bombarded the three major networks with teaser ads for an all-new model. Even on the said morning, Ford launched ads in thousands of newspapers. With the excitement building hourly for the debut, when the curtains and paper fell, the automotive industry would be forever changed.

For many years before, Ford had been looking to introduce a new sports car after the Thunderbird moved to being more of a personal coupe for families. In 1962, under the direction of Lee Iacocca, Ford debuted a small 2-seater, 2 door mid-engine sports car. Its name: Mustang, after the P-51 fighter used in World War II and made famous by pilots like Chuck Yeager and those of the Tuskegee Airmen. The original concept had a simple flaw: it would not have sold that well and Ford needed a volume product.

Ford went back to the drawing board by starting with the compact Falcon. They lengthened the... [Read More]

The world's best selling car is just about to get even better for the 2015 model year. The Ford Focus has undergone a rather extensive facelift not only including the exterior and interior, but powertrain wise as well. Though we had already seen the hatch (and the wagon) in Geneva of this year, Ford chose to show the sedan in New York. The revised Focus ST will debut later this year.

Exterior

The 2015 Focus's exterior moves away from its "Kinetic" design to the new design methodology that debuted on the Ford Start Concept. The grill now looks very similar to that of the Focus Electric, which debuted two years ago. Gone are the triangle design elements, and it their place is the Ford family trapezoidal grill. The grill also has bars, which in different cases are painted or accented in chrome. The fog lamps have been redesigned from their round setting to having a swept back design toward the base of the wheels.

For the first time in... [Read More]

Ford Looking to Add a Third Police Model?

Trademark Indicates a New Model

While Ford has been touting their domination in the police vehicle market as of late, they might be planning yet another model to bring their offerings to three. Following in the footsteps of the Police Interceptor Sedan (aka Taurus) and the Police Interceptor Utility (aka Explorer), Ford has trademarked "Police City" (S.N. 86143444) with the USPTO.

The question remains, however, as to what vehicle this new police model would be based off. Given its name, it is most likely that of the Focus or Fiesta as they would be better situated for city/urban use. Of those two models, the Focus is the most probable given the following conditions:

1. The Focus will launch with a facelift this summer. This would follow the Taurus PI, which launched with the Taurus's facelift.
2. The Focus is built in the US, while the Fiesta is built in Mexico.

No timeline for the introduction of the model has leaked out, so we will have to wait and see which model and when it will be introduced. We will keep our eyes and ears tuned to find out more.

In typically one of the best volume months of the year, Ford's sales rose 3.4 percent in March 2014 to 244,167 units. This rise was, in part, thanks to shipments that were delayed to weather in the past two months. Ford brand and Lincoln brand sales rose 2.6 and 31.4 percent respectively. Retail sales rose 3 percent.

Ford brand sales were lead by the Fusion, which saw sales rise 8.8 percent for a new monthly record of over 32,000 units. Mustang sales also rose 21 percent as Spring started over a good portion of the country.

Taking into account the Utility PI, Explorer sales topped the 19,000 unit mark in March. Utility sales rose as a whole 3.2 percent thanks also to the Flex and Expedition, which saw sales rise 15.3 and 21.2 percent respectively. Ford Edge sales also rose 5.1 percent.

F-Series once again topped the 70,000 unit mark as sales rose 5.1 percent. Ford E-Series and Heavy Trucks also came out in positive territory, while the Transit Connect appears to have supply issues with the switchover.

Lincoln sales were once again helped by the new MkZ, which saw sales rise 71.7 percent. The model's sales... [Read More]

Ford's heavy duty lineup gets new look, PowerStroke diesel for 2016.

Today Ford continues its renewal of its pickup truck and commercial vehicle lineup with an all-new heavy duty lineup. Announced at this year's Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Ford has taken the wraps off the 2016 F-650 and F-750 Super Duty trucks, complete with a new look and best-in-class power.

Most notably the new trucks look very similar to the 2015 F-150 with a similar front clip design, albeit more 'beefy' than their half ton brother. The front clip, hood and front fenders are all-new for 2015, while the doors appear to be carryover from today's big trucks.

Looks aside, the most important aspect of these trucks is their capability, which Ford has of course enhanced for 2015. Ford has ditched the Cummins turbo diesel that is found in their current class 6 and 7 heavies in favor of their own 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbo diesel. Specifically Ford is calling this the second generation 6.7-liter diesel with significant upgrades over today's engine, including a graphite iron engine block and reverse flow layout. The reverse flow design allows shorter airflow... [Read More]
