Ford B-Max Coming to North America?

Ford B-Max Coming to North America?
More Evidence Comes to Light

Ford of Europe has been behind its competitors in the sub-compact MPV segment due to the age of the Euro Fusion. That is about to change in the 1st Quarter of 2012 when the All-New B-Max arrives.

The Ford B-Max will be the second vehicle built by Ford Romania in its new plant located in Craiova, the first vehicle being the Transit Connect. This vehicle will be the first to receive Ford’s new “Fox” inline-3 EcoBoost engine. The engine is also built in the same plant. Ford has confirmed that this engine will be offered in North America.

The new question is: “Will the B-Max just stay in Europe?”

Many developments have lead to this speculation. A few months ago, Ford trademarked the B-Max name with the US Patent Office. Now this week, Ford has trademarked a new mark leading to more speculation. “Easy Access Door System,” as it listed with the patent office, is an integrated sliding door. This sliding door was first shown on the B-Max Concept back the Geneva auto show.

Of course, this vehicle could either be imported from Romania or built in Mexico along with the Fiesta, the B-Max’s platform mate. The latter seems to the most logical due to rumors in coming out of South America.

These rumors from South America point to Ford offering a sub-compact MPV to compete with the VW Suran and Chevy Meriva by the year 2014. The Mexican-made Fiesta is currently being imported in these countries as well. Ford’s plant in Cuantitlan is however set to lose this exporting volume as Ford replaces the current Brazilian-made Fiesta with the new one. This will open up volume at the plant that could be used for another vehicle. When Ford set to make the Fiesta’s plant in Mexico flex before the start of production, they made it capable of producing up to six models at the same time.

So will Ford bring the little B-Max to North America? It looks like it could, but time will tell. Ford recently canceled the 7-seat C-Max for its North American product plans so anything can change.

Personally I think it will stay in Europe. I can't see it catching on here, too much overlap in the lineup

now if Mercury was still alive this would be an ideal vehicle for their lineup

Yeah I don't think it will make US landfall either, I believe Ford could probably make a stronger business case for the Galaxy over this.

I wish people would stop being so concerned with product overlap. it usually is a non starter.

no one is critical of Toyota's 7 SUVs and CUVs 6 oof them with 3rd rows seats.

or toyota's 6 mainline car models plus Scion's 4 compact and sub compact cars. that is 10 cars for the USA, compared with ford's 5 cars+ c-max in 2012.

there is room for more products we need to make reasonable sales predictions for these products.

If ford cannot find ways to market marginal products like the B-max and C-max in this market what hope do they have at winning or even maintaining market share if the competition can?

I agree...The Fiesta is on the shorter side of the subcompact market, and this could take some more sales from the Fit and Versa hatch.

My first thought was "if they couldn't justify the C-Max, I don't see how they could possibly justify this". But after thinking about, if production was in Mexico they could potentially pull it off with the cheap labor there. I could see the Fiesta/B-Max being like the Explorer/Flex (B-Max and Flex being the much lower volume vehicles). Same size and mostly the same capabilities, but styled differently enough to attract different buyers.

it could see the B-MAX "come over" because of the fact the C-MAX EV/Energi will be premium priced and CAFE will cut into sales quotas of Explorer sized Vehicles IMHO

it is interesting to realize that there is a huge market in Mexico and south America to compliment North American sales, and that we need export from Mexico to cover that market.

that said I think the odds of the Transit connect and possibly the C-max7 moving to Hermosillo after the plant is retooled after the fusion and MKz leave, are high. I could see the TC, Fusion, focus, and C-max7 assembled at Hermosillo, for the north American and south American market.

the idea would be share the extensive supplier network B2/3, C2, and EUCD2/CD4 would share. To that point the costs of the focus are the highest because it is the leader in establishing this new supplier network. as more models are rolled out that draw upon this network ford's overall costs and the focus's cost will go down.

the upside is that small volume models like the c-max and b-max that make use of the network can be made less expensively than before.
