No Plans for North American Fusion Wagon, Hatch

And No Production for Thailand as Well
FordInsideNews.com
April 9, 2012
By: Austin Rutherford

Now with the Fusion and Mondeo merging, many had hoped that more versions of the Fusion would be offered due to the customer focuses that the Mondeo must cover in Europe. Sadly, FordInsideNews can confirm that this will not be the case.

Samantha Hoyt, the Fusion’s Marketing Manager and former engineer of the vehicle, talked to FIN about the reason for this decision.

She explained that even though the Fusion/ Mondeo was developed by Ford of North America that they could not make a solid business plan for the two body styles in their birthplace.

As everyone knows these types of vehicles do not sell practically well outside of particular college towns in the country. Basically, the investment into the two models could not foster a return. In the end, the Fusion and Mondeo will have 80-percent parts sharing.

Also, we can confirm that contrary to one site that jumped the gun, the Mexican plant receiving an expansion for the Fusion and MkZ does not mean that the adding of Fusion production to Flat Rock is cancelled. In fact Ford is planning on at least one shift in the factory with the door left open for a possible second shift.

Flat Rock, as she told us, will begin production by mid to late 2013 after Mazda6 production has moved out and retooling has been completed. With the addition of Michigan production, Ford is planning on increasing export sales by large percentages to countries in Latin America and the Middle East from the plant in Mexico.

With the Focus and Fiesta adding production to Thailand for the ASEAN market, speculation has lead to the possibly of the Mondeo being built in the nation as well. However, as of this point in time, Ford has no plans to build it in this large Australian exporting market.

Ford has big expectations for the Fusion and Mondeo, but they are not as big as some of us would like. As it is the vehicle will give us the greatest amount of choices no matter where you live in the world for Ford's past efforts in the mid-size car segment.

Ford North America spokespeople say the weirdest things when making excuses about selling wagons for the USA market ...........Samantha Hoyt, the Fusion’s Marketing Manager and former engineer of the vehicle, quote - As everyone knows these types of vehicles do not sell practically well outside of particular college towns in the country........... what the heck does that mean? When I read this, I get a sense Hoyt is somehow insulting college towns tastes in vehicle types. Because everyone else outside of particular college towns know better. WTF!!

EDIT......this question was answered on your Facebook page thanks.

I figure it would cost maybe 1% of the money spent annually on the Mustang
to offer Both the Fusion 5-door and wagon

therefore (checks 2011 sales numbers)

if they sold 705 together for the Fusion 5-door and wagon in a whole year,
they'd be slightly MORE profitable than the Mustang!

I could see the wagon intruding on Edge sales here in the U.S., perhaps even steal sales from it if the Fusion were to be cheaper.

Re: No Plans for North American Fusion Wagon, Hatch

I think we all knew that Ford wasn't going to bring the hatch and wagon here. No suprise there. It's really too bad though. I really, really, really wanted a hatch version. For crying out loud... The car already looks like a freakin' hatch... just put the darn 5th door on it!!! Other than a few people buying it (myself included) if enough people aren't going to buy it, well then it makes sense not to try to sell it. Right now I'm just hoping for a version with more power and a larger moonroof. I don't need the MKZ's roof, just something bigger than a postage stamp would be nice. It seriously looks like they took a moonroof from a Fiesta and put it on the Fusion from the pics I've seen.

Re: No Plans for North American Fusion Wagon, Hatch

Also, now that I think of it. If they did sell a hatch and/or wagon version of it, it would definitley steal sales from their suv offerings. And that's probably the REAL reason they won't offer it! Think about it... Ford's marketing machine advertises that they have fuel efficient suv's with their new ecoboost. They know for a fact that suv's sell very very well in the USA. So why would they offer a vehicle with awd, and the internal space and capability of a small to midsize suv with better performance and way better fuel efficiency than an suv. In reality, it may not be that the hatch and wagon won't sell. It's really that they'll cannibalize sales from their big sellers... suv's.

Using the excuse one vehicle stealing sales of another vehicle in the same company portrays a very low confidence level in their product to stand on its on merits. Especially vehicles in two totally different segments.
