Update #10 from NASA.gov
Fri, 23 Sep 2011 07:45:08 AM PDT

"As of 10:30 a.m. EDT on Sept. 23, 2011, the orbit of UARS was 100 miles by 105 miles (160 km by 170 km). Re-entry is expected late Friday, Sept. 23, or early Saturday, Sept. 24, Eastern Daylight Time. Solar activity is no longer the major factor in the satellite’s rate of descent. The satellite’s orientation or configuration apparently has changed, and that is now slowing its descent. There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent. It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any certainty, but predictions will become more refined in the next 12 to 18 hours."

UPDATE #11 from NASA.gov
"Fri, 23 Sep 2011 04:30:46 PM PDT

As of 7 p.m. EDT on Sept. 23, 2011, the orbit of UARS was 90 miles by 95 miles (145 km by 150 km). Re-entry is expected between 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, and 3 a.m., Sept. 24, Eastern Daylight Time (3 a.m. to 7 a.m. GMT). During that time period, the satellite will be passing over Canada, Africa and Australia, as well as vast areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The risk to public safety is very remote."

oh where oh where has the satellite gone?

showing just how uncertain the "predicted" orbit(s) became as the UARS got ready to tumble back to earth...

Re: the sky is falling (UARS)

^ when it's an uncontrolled re-entry of an un-aerodynamic satellite
imho
it's final crash zone is not much more predictable than where a paper airplane will land
or (maybe more appropriate)
how many time a pebble will skip over a not quite smooth body of water

Re: the sky WAS falling (meteor/bolide)

finally have time to remember to post about this...

SIERRA FIREBALL DECODED - SpaceWeather.com
On Sunday morning, April 22nd, just as the Lyrid meteor shower was dying down, a spectacular fireball exploded over California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. The loud explosion rattled homes from central California to Reno, Nevada, and beyond. According to Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Envronment Office, the source of the blast was a meteoroid about the size of a minivan.

"Elizabeth Silber at Western University has searched for infrasound signals from the explosion," says Cooke. "Infrasound is very low frequency sound which can travel great distances. There were strong signals at 2 stations, enabling a triangulation of the energy source at 37.6N, 120.5W. This is marked by a yellow flag in the map below."

"The energy is estimated at a whopping 3.8 kilotons of TNT, so this was a big event," he continues. "I am not saying there was a 3.8 kiloton explosion on the ground in California. I am saying that the meteor possessed this amount of energy before it broke apart in the atmosphere. [The map] shows the location of the atmospheric breakup, not impact with the ground."

"The fact that sonic booms were heard indicates that this meteor penetrated very low in atmosphere, which implies a speed less than 15 km/s (33,500 mph). Assuming this value for the speed, I get a mass for the meteor of around 70 metric tons. Hazarding a further guess at the density of 3 grams per cubic centimeter (solid rock), I calculate a size of about 3-4 meters, or about the size of a minivan."

"This meteor was probably not a Lyrid; without a trajectory, I cannot rule out a Lyrid origin, but I think it likely that it was a background or sporadic meteor."

Re: the sky is falling - SOLAR FLARE!

X-class solar flare erupts from giant sunspot - FoxNews
By Tariq Malik
Published July 13, 2012

The sun unleashed a huge flare Thursday (July 12), the second major solar storm to erupt from our star in less than a week.

The solar flare peaked at 12:52 p.m. EDT (1652 GMT) as an X-class sun storm, the most powerful type of flare the sun can have.

"It erupted from Active Region 1520, which rotated into view on July 6," NASA officials said in an alert. Active Region 1520, or AR1520, is a giant sunspot currently facing Earth...

...The sun is currently in the midst of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle. The current cycle is called Solar Cycle 24 and is expected to peak in 2013.

the sky is falling . . . on MARS

in case you haven't seen the news-commercials,
NASA has "javelined" their latest planetary explorer at Mars (Olympics metaphor)
whose lander, Curiosity, is the size of an SUV...
...also "javelined" in that, as a spokesperson said, the Nasa crew will have no more control over the last 7 minutes than us at home ... ie NONE!
during which minutes,
the lander will go from 13,000 mph to ZERO, hopefully gently, by means of a new rocket-powered method, shown:

UPDATE
word is that Curiosity "stuck the landing" and is down safely on Mars
