Taking the '12 Beetle to the Track!

Volkswagen and I have teamed up to show how much drivers can learn from autocrossing. In a multi-part series, I'll be showcasing what racing around a parking lot can teach regular drivers that they can use everyday. And, as a side benefit, I'm learning just how much fun the new Beetle is on the track!

Post what you think here!

It's more than just the styling....it's the interior and the performance.

nice to see its better.. still not really a fan however. I think it would have been cooler if they actually made it rear engine like the original but probably too impracticable

Putting the engine in the back would have been a problem since the modern inline engines are larger than the old boxer engines. There's also the packaging issue (engine would need to be farther forward than in the Type 1, reducing interior space) and the manufacturing issue (a rear-engined platform would require different techniques). The idea's great...the actual production Beetle is fantastic working within the confinds of production parts.
