Continental owners report

As most of you know, I ordered a Conti back in October and it was delivered a few days before Christmas. It is a Reserve 3.0 with Tech, Climate, 30 way seats, CD and Revel. Rudy red with Cappuccino interior. After only a day to get myself acclimated to the car, we drove it around 500 miles over Christmas to visit family.

I love the adaptive steering. It is very quick when going slowly but is less quick at highway speeds so it is not darty at all. The car is very quiet and the ride is very good. I am surprised that it drives much smaller than I expected. It really is much more nimble and a better handler than most people might think.

The 3.0 has serious power and also is very refined. In normal driving or even somewhat aggressive driving, the transmission is very smooth and shifts nicely. However, under wide open throttle, the shifts are too slow and lazy. It almost feels like someone shut off the engine just prior to the shift. I hope that improves with more mileage, but I will be getting an aftermarket tune, anyway, so that should solve that issue.

I was a bit disappointed to find that the memory seats do not work. It saves and remembers the mirror settings but the seat does not respond to the memory buttons. Otherwise the vast adjustments for the seats work flawlessly and my wife and I both enjoyed a nice massage during our road trip. I have an appointment to have the memory feature fixed. I hope it is just a software glitch and they don't have to pull the door panel or remove the seat.

Sync 3 has some improvements over previous versions however there are a few things that I liked better about my MKS sync/Nav system. Voice commands work perfectly and Sync 3 is very user friendly. It does seem silly to me that there is a quadrant that tells me my phone is connected, how much battery life it has, how many bars and that I have 911 assist. I would have been just as happy to have the bluetooth symbol displayed and not waste space with stuff I already know. There are a few other things that I preferred about the earlier system but nothing to be alarmed about.

Overall, I am pleased with the car. Once the memory seats are fixed, I will be happier. Also, as soon as I have a couple of thousand miles or so on the car, I will be getting a tune from Livernois. Their 3.0 tune adds 53 HP at the wheels and improves the transmission shift quality. Good times are ahead!

My first car was red (Toreador Red Mercury Sable) and that car attracted a lot of cops so I swore I would never own a red car again... but I have to admit the new Conti looks real sharp in that shade of red. Very classy!

Re: Continental owners report

I really had no intention of getting another red car. I was planning on the white platinum. However, when I looked at one in white platinum, it just didn't pop for me. My MKS was Red Candy. The Ruby Red is darker and and not quite so "in your face." I like it and I also like the wheels with the black pockets. When I was picking it up at the dealership, a young guy said, "Those wheels are BADASS!"

Congratulations, she's a beauty!!

Bruce, your seats most definitely should be saved via the memory; I'd have your dealer take a look at that.

Yes, I have an appointment for next week. I would almost rather have an internal organ removed than leave my car at the dealership but that has to be fixed.

I'm sure they'll sort it out, mine is going in next week to replace a wheel that they scratched when putting on winter tires. Curious of your thoughts once you get the tune!

Re: Continental owners report

That 3.0 engine is very strong in its stock tune. I think it would hang with or maybe even beat my tuned MKS through first gear. The 1-2 shift at wide open throttle really slows the action, though. It pulls really hard in first, then it feels like the engine shuts down, the shift occurs, and then it surges forward again. If it would shift as quickly and firmly as my tuned MKS, I think the 0-60 would be under 5 seconds.

Re: Continental owners report

The shifts are buffered. It pulls torque at the shift to make is smoother and more in line with how they think "quiet luxury" should shift.

Like you, I hate over buffered shifts.

Your car is gorgeous. Ruby Red is one of the most beautiful colors out there, and I get compliments on my Explorer Sport in Ruby Red all the time. The combo with your wheels is outstanding.

I'm looking forward to your reports when you get your tune. Sorry to hear about the memory function, but it sounds like an easy fix.

Keep up with the updates, and enjoy your wonderful car. The Continental is really starting to grow on me, and I am not a large car fan. However, all of the great reviews really make me want to try one out. I am not surprised that she drives smaller than she is. The CD4 platform is one of the best front driver platforms out there.

Bruce - do you have the 3.0 AWD, and if so, can you "feel" the better balance due to the dynamic torque vectoring between all the wheels? I've yet to drive the 3.0L AWD as we haven't received many AWD's so far at Atlanta dealers. Thanks for the descriptive report!
