Re: Lincoln Firsts

Cadillac Seville, in 1975, had an EFI V8. And I think that Chrysler and AMC may have had EFI even sooner...I'd have to research it.

The Seville was also the first American car that offered full electronic instrumentation in '78.

Interestingly, the Seville "spawned several imitators including the Lincoln Versailles and LeBaron"

Ok the FE V8 didn't sound right but the article I read said it was the first so I will double check that along with the digital display.

Re: Lincoln Firsts

Andrew, your post promted me to look into this more thoroughly. I can't find the GMI post u spoke of so I just googled it. Although I knew Cadillac has been on the forefront of innovation for many years, I never realized the extent. Thanks!

Some highlights:

1938- first American sunroof option

1957- power seat w memory and auto door locks. In 1957!

1964- industry first auto climate control

1966- seat warmers

1973- theft deterrent that flashed lights and sounded horn

1996- industry first use of satellite (Onstar)

2000- industry first night vision

It was a while ago when it was posted.

The funny thing about the OnStar one is Lincoln had something very similar the same year but it didn't catch on which was Motorola RESCU

They might have beaten OnStar too by a few months according to the article but in the end OnStar won out.

Did some more research and I can't find a clear answer on the FE V8 the area where I saw it first was on the wikipedia article for the Town Car where it states this: "In order for the division to attain fuel economy targets mandated by the federal governments through CAFE, Ford abandoned the use of its 400 and 460 big-block V8s in its full-size cars. For 1980, a 130 hp 4.9L V8 (the 302 Windsor, marketed as a 5.0L V8) was the standard engine, becoming the first fuel-injected V8 in North America."

As far as the digital dash one I for the life of me cannot find the article I was looking at I had several websites open when I was making the list and I didn't save them. I will remove both.

Great list.
A few more from memory, although I did not verify,

First to offer dimming headlights
First to offer intermittent wipers
First to offer keypad entry

And didn't the MKZ boast of being first for some level of autonomy or lane keeping or something.

Dimming headlights says Lincoln was "one of the firsts" in everything I have read but doesn't say who was the first
Got the intermittent wipers
Keypad debuted on the Mark VI, Continental, Cougar, and Thunderbird all at the same time.

Added more on the Versailles I never realized how much tech that car offered when new.

Re: Lincoln Firsts

Curious if any other vehicle had an all-glass pano-sunroof similar to the one on the current MKZ...
