Sources: Lincoln Considering RWD Flagship Sedan
Will Lincoln chase after the high-end of the luxury market?

Ford has made it very clear that the company has every intention of revitalizing the Lincoln brand, much like the revitalization the Ford brand has had over the last several years. With a new designer and its own development team, it sounds like new Lincoln product ideas are taking shape- including a possible flagship.

FIN has been able to confirm with two independent sources that Ford is considering the development of a Lincoln flagship sedan. Both sources state that the car under consideration would be rear-wheel drive and be the pinnacle of Ford’s technology prowess. One source suggested the car would reside on a heavily modified variant of the Mustang platform.

Ford Motor Company’s greatly improved financial health is said to have sparked the discussion of the potential Lincoln flagship, which would undoubtedly be a very costly future product program.

FIN’s sources stated that Ford wants Lincoln to have a competitor to the Lexus LS and Mercedes Benz S-Class, which is the segment that this new flagship would target. General Motors’ Cadillac brand is also working on a flagship rear-wheel drive sedan to chase after the German luxury marquees; a car that is said to have a price range that tops out in six-figures.

This news comes just as the fate of Ford of Australia's rear-wheel drive Falcon sedan is in question. Perhaps Ford will progress with plans for a global rear-wheel drive program?

At this point it’s tough to say if the Lincoln flagship will ever see the light of day, but if it does…don’t expect it until later this decade. By then Lincoln’s currently unclear direction will be far more visible.

Re: Sources: Lincoln Considering RWD Flagship Sedan

Lincoln, ultimately, needs something to diffentiate itself from Ford. Since Ford has begun to sell AWD models with high output, the only way Lincoln can concievably do this is to either have a better AWD system, a permanent AWD system or to use RWD entirely. There's that, plus ANY brand needs a flagship. It's rather simple, actually.

With that said, I hope they don't let Ford Australia dumb this down by aligning it with Falcon. Unless Falcon is about to get a lot more expensive, this should go on a platform that no Ford should be built on. I also have to question how it could go on a Mustang platform, unless it's VERY heavily modified with this new "modular" stuff Ford has been working on... think Lincoln LS.

Re: Sources: Lincoln Considering RWD Flagship Sedan

imho 2 (TWO!) Rwd platforms are the way to go
- Mustang "co-platform" for a 3-series-size sportsedan and coupe/cabrio
- Falcon "co-platform" global flagship sedan, between the S- & E-class in size

the LincStang would fit nicely between the MKZ and Focus/G.C-Max-based "MKE"

the Continental(!) would be a moderately stretched Falcon
(actually the nextgen Falcon would be a moderately SHRUNK Continental minus some key, mechanical features like:)

both would have exclusive computer-controlled suspensions, the equivalent (or Better) to/than Cadillac's MagneticRideControl, which would offer completely different ride characteristics

also (at least for the Continental, tho possibly also for a special 'automatic pilot' LincStang)
a 'most expensive'/'cost no object'** hybrid/plug-in/Voltec-ish electrified Awd drivetrain sounds like a no-brainer to me...
...a Fwd-based Virtual-Awd (my favorite), with ICE driving the the front wheels and electrics driving JUST the rear wheels with a computerized 'software-only' linkage
could point the way for über-EcoTech "MK-series" Lincolns

** imho having the most expensive Lincolns top out at $99k is the perfect amount of PricePoint-ing

&
obligatory, shameless Mission: LINCOLN! plug

OHHHHH!!!! Some one at Lincoln still has a brain?

A RWD flagship in not only mandatory, is a relatively easy option based on a Mustang RWD platform. And the Flagship is not refered to the size. The flagship could be a RWD midsize sport sedan or extremely luxurious 4 door coupe... Please, use your imagination guys

Re: Sources: Lincoln Considering RWD Flagship Sedan

How many times has this been brought up?? This is a no-brainer! Lincoln clearly has given up on being a luxury brand and instead has decided to make do as a near-luxury brand targeting Buick, Audi, Acura, Chrysler, etc. Still, a 3-series fighter based on the next Mustang is an easy task, convertible and all. Stretching/widening that platform for a large sedan is a smart move as well and at minimum it would go toe-to-toe with Chrysler's new 300/300 C/300 SRT8 super sedans. Imagine the base model having the 300+ HP 3.7L V6, the Hemi fighter model sporting the 400+ HP 5.0L V8, and the top of the line brandishing the Cobra's 550+ HP 5.4L SC V8. I doubt that limo companies would be upset to have a real sedan again from Lincoln.

Buy American!
Buy Ford!
So say we all...

Re: Sources: Lincoln Considering RWD Flagship Sedan

I don't understand why this has to be soo difficult. Let's forget about the consumer clinics and marketing groups and roll out a real RWD Lincoln and a real Lincoln again.

2017 is not far away to come up with something that says what Lincoln is all about (and should be) for the past 100 years and for the next 100. Ok, we can forget the last 10 years because outside of the LS (which ended in 2006), there are no real Lincoln's currently being built to the Lincoln standards set way back in the beginning. Let's get back to the Roots of the Lincoln Brand and not stray.

I predict
that if Lincoln doesn't have at least one Rwd car by the end of 2014 (the year the nextgen Mustang intro's)
Lincoln will NOT make it to 2017

...made up a new word the other day for Lincoln's demise:

Sounds about right, a Continental for their 100th birthday. Lincoln might have a great future afterall.

Re: Sources: Lincoln Considering RWD Flagship Sedan

We should start seeing concepts of it in the near future. It is the same timeframe when Cadillac's flagship is due and Cadillac just unveiled their ultra luxury car concept.
