Volvo Trademarks Hint at Small and Electric Vehicles to Come
SWEDEspeed Forum

posted by Sebastien Bell on 23 January 2017 in News Volvo News

Volvo’s been on a trademarking spree lately, filing applications in the US for V20 and V30, and filing the names P5, P6, and more in Europe. The European trademark applications say that the names P5, P6, P8, P9, and P10 are for “vehicles and conveyances; Electric vehicles.” These would presumably be added after the model name, […] More

First Volvo EV Will Have at Least 250 Miles of Range
Base price between $35,000 and $40,000 touted

AutomobileMag.com

By: Alex Nishimoto - March 13, 2017

We’ve known for some time that Volvo’s first all-electric model would debut in 2019. We now have a better idea of how much it will cost and how far it will go thanks to comments from Volvo CEO Lex Kerssemakers.

Speaking to journalists at the Geneva Motor Show, Kerssemakers said the upcoming EV will have a starting price between $35,000 and $40,000, and a range of at least 250 miles...

Wee Volvo 20-Series Models Are Coming, and Perhaps to the U.S.
Car&Driver

April 18, 2017 at 5:14 pm by Jeff Jablansky

...“It’s pretty straightforward: The 90 is the biggest, and the 40 is the smallest,” Kerssemakers said. “And when there is a 20, it will be a smaller one.” If we read his statement correctly, this marks the first time that Volvo has confirmed a 20-series model......It’s also unlikely that the 20-series would mark the return of impractical cars to the Volvo fold. “Coupes and convertibles—we don’t have them in the plan,” he shared, “because we are focusing on the bread-and-butter [vehicles] for the moment.” At the recent launch of the V90 Cross Country, another company executive hinted that a sports car is in the works, however.

Most likely, the 20-series family will at least spawn an XC20 to go up against the smallest utility vehicles and city cars from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, and others, and perhaps an S20 small sedan. As Volvo continues its push toward small engines and electrification, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect the 20-series to offer a plug-in-hybrid powertrain featuring a three-cylinder gas engine, while another 20-series variant could be an electric vehicle. Volvo is also said to be working on an EV that is set to launch in 2019...

Little(r) &or BEV Volvoids/Geely-oids coming...is P18-1900 Possible?

China’s Geely Purchases Lotus, Plans to Restore the Brand’s Lost Luster
The Truth About Cars
| By Matt Posky on May 24, 2017

China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company has decided to purchase a 49.9 percent stake in Proton from Malaysian conglomerate DRB-Hicom and a majority share of the United Kingdom’s Lotus Cars.

Geely seems to have an affinity for other manufacturers and eclectic tastes — not just because it has received criticism for modeling its own cars after everything from Roll-Royce to Toyota, but because it also purchased Volvo Cars and the London Taxi Company. This could be extremely good news for Lotus, which always seems to be in a bit of a bind. Whether or not you like the idea of a Chinese company owning distinctively European brands, Geely helped Volvo come back from the brink and has committed to doing the same for Lotus.

“Reflecting our experience accumulated through Volvo Car’s revitalization, we also aim to unleash the full potential of Lotus Cars and bring it into a new phase of development by expanding and accelerating the rolling out of new products and technologies,” stated the company in its official announcement.

Considering we’ve seen the same lineup from Lotus for what seems like a lifetime, this is exciting news. Everyone likes the Elise, but it’s time to move on after 16 years.

Presumably, Geely’s strategy with the sports car brand will mimic its dealings with Volvo Cars by not being obtrusive. The Chinese company essentially gave the Swedish automaker a wad of cash and told them to keep up the good work. This has resulted in some of the best-received Volvos in recent history and increasing annual sales volume since 2014. If Lotus receives similar supportive parenting and the tools to succeed, there is no telling what it might come out with.

However, what’s good for the goose is also good for the gander. Geely owner Li Shufu has made his intention to own an exceptionally diverse roundup of automakers well known. Owning Lotus ads a performance brand to the mix and ads a level of prestige to the company. There are also opportunities to collaborate with Lotus on Geely models sold within China, which have already seen massive sales gains this year. April deliveries for the core brand were up 94 percent over 2016, and that wasn’t even its best month of 2017.

Geely is also expected to provide Proton with modern vehicle technologies co-developed with Volvo. Investing in the brand could also help it rebound from the sizable losses it has suffered on the global market in recent years. Sources speaking to Automotive News stated the Hong Kong holding company wants to bolster Proton sales in Malaysia, the U.K., India and Australia.

Tian Yongqiu, an independent auto consultant, explained this is all part of Zhejiang Geely’s master plan for world domination — a plan that seems to be in its final phases.

“Geely has almost finished the puzzle for the global market: It has presence in Europe through Volvo, which can also go to the U.S. It must fill in the blank by breaking into Southeast Asia, which is dominated by Japanese small cars,” Tian said. “It’s hard for Geely to break into this market on its own. But with Proton’s factory and massive network, it can be a short cut.”

Geely claims the deal is subject to regulatory approval and the signing of a definitive agreement, but expects acquisitions to be finalized in July.

Volvo open to Lotus suspension tuning
British sports car firm set to be absorbed by Geely.
Drive.com
- David McCowen - 25 May 2017

Volvo's chassis engineers are open to working with Lotus to produce future models.

The British sports car firm, along with its Proton parent company, is set to be acquired by Geely, the Chinese firm that acquired Volvo in 2010.

Lotus has a strong history of engineering consultancy, helping car companies to fine-tune the suspension settings of sporting and comfort-oriented models.

The brand is likely to be brought in to Volvo's development process as engineers work on models ranging from executive limousines to affordable hatchbacks and Polestar performance models intended to take on the likes of Mercedes-AMG.

Roger Wallgren, principal engineer of vehicle dynamics for the new XC60, told Drive that the expertise offered by Lotus "would be appreciated".

"Why not," he says...

Interesting article. When Ford owned Volvo I always wondered why Volvo did not obtain some of that Ford suspension dynamics magic.

Volvo XC20 set to rival Audi Q2
Volvo already has the platform for a small premium SUV and is close to launching a suitable range of three-cylinder engines

AutoCar.co.UK
- by Richard Bremner - 15 May 2017

...Volvo’s head of R&D, Henrik Green, said... it’s “much easier to reduce the CMA platform’s length than it is its width”. Length is the more critical dimension in terms of the car being perceived as a small SUV, and the additional width probably won’t matter from a styling perspective. However, the extra weight and aerodynamic frontal area could slightly compromise the car’s performance and economy.

Besides having a broadly suitable platform, Volvo also has an appropriate range of powertrains. Its new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged version of the Drive-E four-cylinder engine is “almost ready”, said Green.

“It can go in any vehicle in the range (including the XC90), so it’s a marketing decision on which models to fit it to,” he said. The engine is reported to be capable of producing well over 150bhp in its most powerful form...

Polestar becomes standalone brand for high-performance electrified cars
MotorAuthority
- Viknesh Vijayenthiran - JunE 21, 2017

Originally an independent motorsport team dedicated to racing Volvos, Polestar would later start tuning Volvo road cars and eventually be bought out by the Swedish automaker.

Volvo’s original plan for Polestar was to make it an alternative to BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. But on Wednesday the automaker announced that it has turned Polestar into a new standalone brand focused on high-performance electrified cars.

Polestar cars will share “technological and engineering” aspects with Volvo cars, although they won’t carry any Volvo logos. Polestar will also continue to offer upgrades for Volvo cars, under the new Polestar Engineered label.

Crucially, Polestar will sit alongside Volvo and Lynk & Co in Chinese automaker Geely’s portfolio of global brands. This means we should see Polestar cars sold in the United States.

Serving as CEO at Polestar will be Thomas Ingenlath. The former Audi exec is also Volvo’s design boss and was responsible for the current design theme introduced with the second-generation XC90 SUV.

“I am really excited to take up the challenge of establishing this exciting brand, developing a fabulous portfolio of bespoke products and channeling the passion we have throughout the Polestar team,” Ingenlath said in a statement. “The next chapter in Polestar’s history is just beginning.”

The news comes just a week after it was reported that Polestar was working on an electric sports car. Polestar’s vice president of product strategy and R&D, Henrik Fries, also told Motor Authority in March that Polestar’s future was all about electrification and that the company would spearhead the development of the technology at Volvo.

Polestar says it will announce further details on its plans in the fall. An announcement at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show in September is a strong possibility.
