Frankfurt 2009: Ford unveils 1.6-liter EcoBoost - GreenAutoblog
by Sam Abuelsamid
on Sep 15th 2009 at 5:00AM
Ford's EcoBoost offensive is continuing in Frankfurt this week with the official launch of the third member of the family, the 1.6-liter four cylinder. The new engine joins the currently-in-production 3.5-liter V6 and the already-announced 2.0-liter four. Like the rest of the family, this one features direct gasoline injection, a turbocharger and dual independent variable valve timing.

Output numbers aren't yet final but it should come in at about 180 hp and 170-175 lb-ft of torque. Ford's plan is to use the EcoBoost engines to replace larger, normally-aspirated engines in various applications. For example, the 1.6 will replace 2.0-2.5-liter engines in many of the C-segment vehicles like the Focus and C-Max. The 2.0-liter will replace 2.5-3.0-liter units starting in 2010 CUVs and SUVs. That likely means we will see this as the base engine in the new unibody Explorer and, possibly, as a replacement for the V6 in the Escape.

Ford plans to have 1.3 million of these engines on the road over the next four years with availability in 80 percent of its product lines.

Check out the latest edition of the Autoblog Podcast as Ford's Mark Schirmer and Mark Kaufman join us to discuss the new C-Max, EcoBoost and the rest of the C-Segment vehicles.

How much does 1.6 EB weight?
Is it 100% new or is it upgraded Duratec 1.6?

I believe the block, crank and rods are the same.

Pistons, heads, etc. are very different !

Next Focus RS coming with Hybrid 2.0 EB?

It's no secret that we openly covet the Ford Focus Rallye Sport. Unfortunately, the Blue Oval never found it in its heart to let the hottest version of its Focus hatchback into the United States... or any version of the European Focus for that matter. As such, we're certainly not expecting to see the rumored Clubsport model that Auto Express claims will be the current car's swan song before the new version is unveiled based on the all-new Focus.

Too bad, as the idea of 350 horsepower from Ford's highly lauded 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine sounds just peachy, as do the lightweight racing seats, lowered and stiffened suspension and suitably sticky rubber. If there's any truth to all of this, expect the run to 60 to be dispatched in just about five seconds flat. Don't be too saddened by the news, though.

The next juicy bit of internet rumormongering is that a new version of the RS has been greenlit, based on the new Focus platform that was recently unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. This model would seemingly have a much better chance of coming Stateside, being that the next Focus will be a true global vehicle.

Re: Next Focus RS coming with Hybrid 2.0 EB?

It does not need a Hybrid. Unless its like a Volt Set up. Its going to be pushing 40 mpg, what’s the use? Unless its in the low $20’s in price. Can ford keep it below $25K for a full Hybrid?

EB is great, Hybrid is a waste of money for such a small car.

Report: Sporty RS Based On 2012 Ford Focus May Get Hybrid AWD System - MotorAuthority
By Viknesh Vijayenthiran
February 3rd, 2010

...According to a new report, Ford is working on a new RS but instead of using the current car’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo and advanced RevoKnuckle front-wheel drive system and Quaife differential, the next-generation of the high-performance Focus RS will feature a revolutionary hybrid system offering the option of all-wheel drive.

The hybrid system will team a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine with an electric motor in effort to maintain power while cutting emissions and fuel economy. Peak output should remain around the 300 horsepower mark, with drive being sent to the front wheels via the EcoBoost engine and to the rear wheels via the electric motor.

As strange as it may seem that Ford would make such a radical departure for its Focus RS, it’s a move Mitsubishi is planning to do for the next-generation of its Lancer Evolution series, the Evo XI.

Don’t get too excited because the new Focus RS isn’t expected to arrive for at least another three years and anything could change between now and then. In the interim, however, Ford is expected to launch a Focus ST model complete with a 240 horsepower EcoBoost engine and dual-clutch transmission.

EcoBoost Encore: 2.0EB - WardsAuto

EcoBoost Encore Comes in 4-Cyl. Layout - WardsAuto
By Tom Murphy
WardsAuto.com, Feb 25, 2010 8:30 AM

The Ward's 10 Best Engines competition has recognized outstanding powertrain development for 16 years. This month, Ward's explores the future of Ford’s EcoBoost powertrain strategy.

Ford Motor Co. has plenty to crow about with the technologically advanced 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 that landed recently on the 2010 Ward’s 10 Best Engines list in its first year of eligibility...

...So where to now for the performance-enhancing powertrain configuration that will be available in more than 90% of Ford’s vehicle lineup by 2013?

Befitting the stated mission for EcoBoost, the next application will support the trend toward downsized powertrains: The ’11 Ford Edge cross/utility vehicle arrives this summer with the all-new 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 as the base engine.

Ford has not yet released output numbers for the 2.0L EcoBoost, but powertrain Vice President Barb Samardzich said last year the engine is expected to produce at least 230 hp and 240 lb.-ft. (325 Nm) of torque.

The new 4-cyl., assembled in Valencia, Spain, is a bid for optimal fuel efficiency in the growing midsize CUV segment. Ford promises the 2.0L single-turbo direct-injection gasoline engine will improve the Edge’s mileage some 15% compared with the normally aspirated 3.5L V-6 that currently powers the vehicle...

...The EcoBoost 2.0L is about 55 lbs. (25 kg) lighter than the normally aspirated 3.5L V-6, and Ford considers the 2.0L to be the first truly global EcoBoost engine.

The engine will be available in the S-Max and Galaxy multipurpose vehicles in Europe beginning in April and also will join the powertrain lineup in the ’11 Ford Falcon in Australia.

Additional U.S. applications for the 2.0L are due this year for Ford Explorer and likely the new ’12 Focus next year. Ford expects I-4s will make up 66% of the EcoBoost lineup by 2013...

quite a bit more...

imho their ^ mention of a 2.0EB Focus is more 'journalistic' mistake than guarantee at this point... ...altho

Re: EcoBoost Encore: 2.0EB - WardsAuto

This needs to be offered as an stand-alone option, as well as in a bundled package with all the bells and whistles.

I wonder how this compares pricewise and MPGwise to the 3.0 liter V6 in the Fusion.
