John Simister over at the Independent got his hands on the new Mazda6 on the eve of its launch in the UK and walked away impressed. For those of you who join us in lamenting the lack of Ford Europe products on these shores, he says the car seriously rivals the Mondeo and "feels like an Alfa 159 should, or like a BMW 3 Series would if it were, like the Mazda, front-wheel drive." Pretty high praise, especially when you consider the top-of-the-line model only comes with the 170 horsepower 2.3 liter four-banger as opposed to the 3.5 liter V6 that will be available when the Mazda6 arrives on our shores

original article:
BelfastTelegraph.co.uk - -Road test: Mazda 6 2.0-litre (http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/carfinder/article3199406.ece)
The revamped Mazda 6 is a real revelation:
lighter and more agile, yet supple and serene...

&
my favorite part:

"...the Mazda is a step ahead of the Mondeo, because it has an easy agility
the Ford lacks. That's because the Mazda is lighter, smaller and more manageable...
...It's just the right size for a normal family car."

& their closing comment:

"BMW 320i...
The "ultimate driving machine" faces its biggest driving-pleasure threat yet
from the upstart Mazda. The BMW's extra cost does buy the comfort of
a premium badge, though."

I am really liking the 6.
I would much rather have a GTDI 4cyl with it than a big V6. I prefer automatic's these days and I would be happy with a 6 sp with a slightly detuned (for better FE) and maybe about 260HP as long as I can get mid 30's mpg.

"only comes with the 170 horsepower 2.3 liter" is incorrect.
Top of the range 2.5-litre version, replaces the outgoing 2.3-litre engine.

And new Mazda site http://www.theallnewmazda6.com/en-GB/?Flash=true

The Mazda6 and Mondeo are projected as different cars, the 6 for the sportier car and Mondeo as the comfy boulevard car, I'd say both cars are excellent for what they are built for. The Mazda6 here in Europe is very popular and gets cross shopped against the 3 series.

I understand that Mazda will offer a slightly different (larger) styled Mazda6 for the North American market, and have said no more wagon variant for North America

Hope we'll see it no later than NAIAS!!! (I DID ask a Mazda rep at the autoshow if they had one hiding somewhere for only-those-that-asked to see ;))
maybe the US version will just have bigger/longer bumpers?

The article says,
"...neither, incidentally, is the Mazda itself based on Mondeo underpinnings, even though Mazda is Ford-owned. The new Mazda 6 is built on a development of the previous car's platform."
&
a good source at BON (http://www.blueovalforums.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php?t18869.html) says,
"Actually, some are calling it the CD3-2, or simply the CD32.
Supposedly, the Fusion/Milan/MKZ all move to this platform for 2009MY and the Edge and MKX in 2010MY."
hmmmmm

The Camry wasn't on the list last year.

the new'Bu is extremely goodlooking in&out imho
& I've read it'll get drivetrain upgrades in the near future (something us FMC guys are familiar with)
plus
it will move to the Epsilon2 platform in just a couple/few years
& the VectrAura/Insignia is the best looking ~2010~ car I've seen pix of so far.

GM is not playing games anymore. I think the Fusion will make the cut next year.
