VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO LEAKED AHEAD OF GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

http://images.leftlanenews.com/content/february2008/scir-2.jpg

Volkswagen's Scirocco was the original Hot Hatch of the 1970s alongside the Rabbit and the GTI...but after awhile, VW pulled it from the US and focussed solely on the then re-named Golf and GTI. Then, a few years back, VW showed off the Iroc Concept...hinting at the return of the Scirocco. Well, now it is confirmed and the Scirocco will return in 2009, but not to US shores...yes, sadly it will remain a European exclusive. But that still hasn't stopped US interest in the hatch and we have all been eagerly awaiting the debut of the new Scirocco...and here it is, leaked ahead of its Geneva debut courtesy of my friends at Left Lane News.com (http://www.leftlanenews.com/volkswagen-scirocco.html). So, take a look and tell us what you think!

EARLY LOOK: 2009 VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO
Two images of the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco have leaked online, ahead of its official debut next week in Geneva. While it remains unclear if the Scirocco will make it to U.S. shores, one thing is clear VW has made quite a few changes from the Iroc concept car that was used to preview the new model.

Reports surfaced a few months ago suggesting the Scirocco would not be offered in the North American market, but the appearance of prototypes this summer on U.S. soil suggests otherwise.

In late April, Volkswagen of America executive Adrian Hallmark said the new Scirocco hatchback would not come to the United States because "we don't want it." He implied it would cannibalize sales of the GTI.

But in May, spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode said the final decision will not be made by Volkswagen of America, but rather by VW CEO Martin Winterkorn in Germany.

Not a bad looking little car at all. Just not my cup of tea. I do like the wheels though.

I think I would take the Astra over this for styling. But V8's are pretty sweet to drive, when they are not in the shop. Its also kind of sad that Japanese and Germans are bringing Saab rims to the market before Saab.
When will Detroit learn not to review their design cues years before production of their cars?

Hope you don't mind my taking your enquiries at face value, R.G. ;)

tho I never quite 'got' Scirocco's in the past,
this one makes me think of my "Cimba" (to chop or not to chop...)
&
imho the only way a close-but-separate sport model will work is
if they don't make the family-edition/plain(er)jane one...
like do the 5-door as a Wabbit
but keep the 3 'special'...
but then I can remember when coupes were less expensive than sedans - - this is becoming a very confusing year for me http://home.surfree.com/~pauld/blink.gif

It looks very different from what we are used to seeing from VW and thats good because the "double decker" grille is starting to become old.

No need to ask for permission...that is exactly why I asked for opinions. ;)

I agree with you and I certainly hope that Volkswagen does nothing to make the Scirocco anything less than a fun, energetic & sprightly performer. Keep it high powered and make it more a luxurious and larger alternative Three-Door to the Volkswagen GTI. In fact, I see this Scirocco taking on the Volvo C30 in the realm of a stylish and fun hatchback for the hip urban enthusiast who doesn't need blistering performance.

And yes...please, no Five-Door Variant...that is what the Golf/Rabbit is for!

Stay Fabulous!

came across TopGear's article (http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2664/)
&
they have an interior shot/rendering

&
verbiage:
"...The Scirocco will live or die by its looks, though, and the TG office is split on the styling. The Iroc was a huge hit... but we're
not quite sure whether the production car retains the concept's mojo or whether it's just too toned down. We've got a feeling it
won't be quite the style icon of the original Scirocco... but what do you think?

It's an important question, because VW insiders say that the Scirocco previews the styling of the next-generation Golf, set to
arrive at the end of this year. Expect to see an awful lot of that face, in other words..."

There is a lot of C30 in the styling.

I would say there is hints of Alfa Romeo styling on the center console too, and the seats to have Italian Luxury..
Perhaps owning those italian brands is trickling over to Volkswagen..

The dash layout does look very attractive, but at the same time...it is the same dash that you see in the Jetta, Rabbit/Golf, and the Eos...it is the corporate VW Dash with the same fittings and the same control layout.

The saving grace though is that it is a very attractive layout and the Purple & Red back lighting is very sharp...but I wish for the Scirocco, that it had a more unique and individual layout inside with some specific switchgear. At least the seats and interior color options do stand out and the door pulls are unique from other VWs.

Still though, I wish and hope that the Scirocco does come to the US. It would be a fun alternative to the C30 and the plain jane Rabbit.

WOW, with cars like this I could see VW catching Toyota in the future.
I still have not seen one Toyota that I would love to own.

The ONLY! Toyota I would even consider owning would be the Avalon I have to say it's a pretty nice looking car and I am going by looks alone 'cause I have never driven or rode in one. I think it looks more like a Lexus than a Toyota.
