Chrysler and Ford have been at the top of the headlines all year long for various reasons, with Ford continuing to slim down by selling off its PAG brands, while Chrysler got dumped by Daimler and went private at the hands of Cerberus Capital Management. 2008 looks to be an equally interesting year in the auto industry, and a recent article in Fortune by senior editor Alex Taylor III suggests that a merger between Chrysler and Ford could be in the cards for the coming year. Talk about your haymakers.

What does Chrysler have that Ford could possibly want? THe ONLY thing would be the RWD 300C and Charger.... thats it, Ford has better products than Chrysler in every other segment.

The Global Jeep brand might be something Ford could use. And the RAM could help Ford too

A RAM would totally overlap with the F-150, I really don't see the good in that.

Jeep on the other hand would be a good addition to Ford but only after getting rid of every single model but the Wrangler.

And why would the maker of the Mustang want a Charger which will be another seasonal fad like the 300.

If Ford wants to go bankrupt for sure, and take Chrysler with them, they need to look into this senseless deal.

This would be an all-time dumb idea. Aside from Jeep-which Ford has some legit ties to, from WWII-the rest of Chrysler is inferior to either what Ford has or is about to have.

This article is the result of a slow news week.

Ford has enough problems without strapping Chrysler Group on. Chrysler is an utter mess. The only good products they have are the new minivans. Everything else needs a massive overhaul to even become competitive.

Not even a rumor, just Alex Taylor's wet dream [of the week].

If that's true, he must have a real, enduring hatred of American industry, and of the American car industry in particular.

I have to agree here. Chrysler would gain in such a merger. If they had access to the Fusion platform, they could ditch those horrid Sebring/Avenger sedans, and the good news for Chrysler would only roll forward from there.
