Green isn't a single color; it's a spectrum on an artist's palette. As automakers reduce their vehicles' emissions and petroleum consumption, they must choose the right shade of green for each type of vehicle.
The Chevrolet Volt and Ford Explorer-- my choices for 2011 Free Press Car and Truck of the Year -- exemplify this. The Volt allows most owners to go weeks or months without stopping at a gas pump.
