SHANGHAI, China, 6 July, 2011 – Ford Motor China announced wholesale sales of 274,510 units for the first half of 2011, a 14 percent increase from the same period last year. In June, Ford sold 44,442 units, an 11 percent increase from June 2010.

Ford Focus reached total sales of 16,992 units in June, an increase of 19 percent from June 2010, and in the first six months of 2011, Focus sales exceeded 100,000 units.

Ford Mondeo continued its strong momentum with 5,240 wholesale units sold in June, a 39 percent increase from the same period last year. Equipped with the environmentally friendly EcoBoost engine and PowerShift transmission, the upgraded Mondeo increases fuel economy by up to 20 percent and reduces emissions by 15 percent.

Ford Fiesta had 6,346 wholesale units sold in June, bringing total sales since its launch in March 2009 to over 150,000 units. With the upgraded 2011 Fiesta launched in May, the Ford’s stylish compact is attracting more Chinese customers.

Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA), Ford Motor's passenger vehicle joint-venture in China, sold 35,929 units in June, an increase of 16 percent from a year ago, closing the first half of 2011 with 209,118 units sold; while Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford's commercial vehicle investment in China, recorded sales of 105,304 units in the first six months, a 19 percent jump from the same period last year.

"We are working hard to provide our Chinese customers an expanded lineup of high quality, safe, fuel efficient vehicles they want and value," said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford's Asia Pacific and Africa region and chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China. "As an important part of our aggressive growth plan, we are expanding our production capacity, retail network, service capability, as well as our portfolio here in the world's largest automotive market."

Last month, Ford announced that it expects its worldwide sales to increase by nearly 50 percent by mid-decade to 8 million vehicles a year. By 2020, Ford expects 32 percent of sales to come from the Asia Pacific Africa region, more than doubling the current percentage of global sales volume Ford achieves in the region.

Ford will introduce 15 new vehicles and more than double the number of its dealerships in China by 2015. It is also doubling its professional workforce in China during the same time.

To accelerate future growth, Ford continues to make investments to expand its production capacity in China. Last month, CFMA broke ground for a USD 500 million engine plant in Chongqing to increase its annual engine production capacity to 750,000 units by 2013. In addition, Ford signed an MOU in May 2011 to build its first transmission plant in China, also in Chongqing, with an initial annual capacity of up to 400,000 units.

Ford's production in China will also be ramped up with two new vehicle assembly plants set to come on line – the first in 2012 in Chongqing with CFMA, and the second in 2013 in Nanchang with JMC.

Excellent news, but they still need to get more agressive in China.

Excellent news, but they still need to get more agressive in China.

They need to introduce Lincoln over there soon. The larger and luxury vehicle demand in China will be booming in a few years, and Ford will need to compete.

I see this market as a saving factor for a large/mid-size RWD platform in the USA, as luxury sales in China and other emerging markets will demand it.
