The South American Ford Cargo

In late 2008 through 2009, there were many analysts expecting that Ford would not survive through the crisis with the global automotive sales imploding. Fast forward to today and not only did Ford live through the crisis but is also having a sales rebound on a worldwide basis.

The major news to come out of August was the formation of Ford’s newest subsidiary. Ford Romania S.A. was chartered on August 1st. Ford Romania is in charge of distributing Ford cars in the country and also oversees the new plant in Craiova, which is 2nd home of the Ford Transit Connect. Next year, production of the B-Max, a sub-compact MPV and replacement for the European Ford Fusion, will start for exportation all over Europe.

This month’s major market mover, as for most of the year, was India which saw sales rise 220% over last year. Much of this growth came from the new, locally built Ford Figo which has stepped into the top 10 cars sold in India. The Figo has also become a major success in South Africa. In less than two months of sales, it has surged to be the 4th best selling car in the country and soon could threaten the Volkswagen Polo Viva for 1st place.

Notable mentions need to go out to Ford Mexico and Ford Canada. Ford Mexico August 2010 sales were nearly double that of July 2010 sales. This allowed Ford to climb to 3rd place in overall sales, surpassing Volkswagen and coming very close to GM. Ford Canada once again claimed 1st place in sales for the month. It looks more evident that Ford will end up being number #1 in the country, something that Ford has not done in generations.

Trouble still abounds though. For the past two months, Ford sales have been down from the month directly before in the United States and Canada. These markets are two most profitable markets in the world and sales reductions due to fears over a double-dip recession could hurt Ford profitability this quarter. Also, European sales were down drastically compared to a year ago and last month. The only vehicles to overcome the downturn were the S-Max and Transit Connect.

This month’s vehicle introductions were:

• The New Ford Edge was released in the United States and Canada. This is the first vehicle to feature the new infotainment system named MyFord Touch. By the end of the year, the New Edge will be introduced into the Mexican, Brazilian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern markets.

• Lincoln’s new MkX took in its first sales in the United States and Canada. The MkX features best in class standard power and fuel economy as well as being the first application of MyLincoln Touch. Its launch should continue as it is released into Mexico, the Middle East, South Korea, and Japan as the year goes on.

• The Ford Figo was launched into the nation of Nepal. The Figo will continue its rollout early next year as the left hand version of the sub-compact goes on sale in Mexico, the Middle East, and North Africa.

• Columbia and Brazil saw there first sales of the Mexican-built World Ford Fiesta in August. Initially Columbia will only offer the hatch while Brazil will only offer the sedan. Argentina and Chile will all receive the car by year’s end.

• The Lincoln MkS has been on sale in Mexico since its introduction for the 2009 model year, but last year it was not allotted any of the new ecoboost models. That changed in August as sales of the 355 hp sedan finally commenced.

Markets included in this month’s sales were the US, the Euro19, the Baltic States, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Taiwan, China, Venezuela, Russia, India, New Zealand, Turkey and Mexico. Note that to be included in the list, a market must have contributed to at least one model’s sales.

Do to forces beyond my control I am now forced to combine the sales of the Latin American Fiesta and the World Fiesta.

Maybe this will start something...more Focuses were sold in China than in the Euro19 combined.
