The UAW told its local leaders at Ford plants across the U.S. to come to Detroit for a meeting Tuesday in anticipation of reaching a new labor contract with the automaker, the UAW said today.

The union and Ford are still in negotiations and do not have an agreement yet, but called the Tuesday meeting because leaders must make travel arrangements, said UAW spokeswoman Michele Martin.

Both UAW President Bob King and Vice President Jimmy Settles were bargaining with top negotiators from Ford for the seventh straight day.

With each passing day, Ford workers are growing more restless as they wait for information about the status of contract talks between the UAW and the Dearborn automaker.

We are very anxious,” said Jeff Jordan, a worker at Ford’s Saline plant. “Everybody is talking about it pretty much all day.”

Ford kicked off negotiations with the UAW on July 29 for a new national labor agreement for its 40,600 autoworkers. The two sides agreed to an indefinite extension of the outgoing 2007 contract on Sept. 13 as the UAW focused on reaching a deal with General Motors first.

On Wednesday, GM workers ratified their deal, which provides a $5,000 signing bonus, up to a $3.50 an hour raise for entry-level workers and enhanced profit sharing, among other benefits. On Sept. 21, the union said it would focus on reaching a deal with Ford next, saving Chrysler for last.
