North America

Ford sales fell in the United States from March following industry norms. Sales were however up 16% from a year before. All Ford branded vehicles with the exception of the Flex had sales increases. Ford continued to sell more full-size trucks than any other company with the F-Series. Healthy increases came from the new Explorer and Focus and the Fusion. April was the first full month of sales for the all-new 2012 model which imploded inventory levels to 23 days from 47 the month before. 60 days of inventory is the desired level. Ford Fiesta also recorded its second consecutive month over 9,000 sales.

Ford Canada sales were up 6% and continued as the country’s best selling auto company. The gain in sales was lead by the Mustang, Explorer, and Transit Connect. Lincoln sales fell as MkT and MkX sales had a rough month.

Ford Mexico sales are continuing to have trouble. Both Ford and Lincoln sales fell in April even with most other brands improving. This is a clear result of falling truck sales without improving car sales. Ford, unlike Nissan, GM, and VW, does not offer cheap domestically built small cars and is therefore left to rely on trucks. Does this sound familiar?

South America

The only vehicle in Brazil to increase in sales from March was the EcoSport. All others fell as Ford lost a small piece of market share.

Argentina was a different story. Ford sales soared and market share increased as sales increased for the EcoSport, Focus, and both Fiestas. This propelled Ford to second place in overall sales.

Europe

April 2010 was the first month after many countries ended their scraping programs. As a result, many automakers set out their own incentives to keep the car lots flowing. Ford, on the other hand, did not go deep into incentives. This led to sale and market share decreases. As predicted by FIN, April 2011 sales made a turnaround in addition to market share gains. The gains came from the Focus, C-Max, and Transit.

Like North America, the all-new Ford Focus saw its first full month of sales in some nations. Germany saw its first sales during the month as sales increased across the continent. The Focus sedan and wagon join the hatchback next month for production of these two body styles started during April. Sales of the all-new C-Max also continued their upward progression solidifying its position as the second best selling compact MPV after the Renault Scenic.

S-Max and Galaxy also had better sales from a year ago following their facelifts and their aging competition. These sales are of course small in the overall picture.

Asia Pacific and Asia

Even with overall industry sales falling, Ford sales continued to increase in China due to the sales of the Focus and Mondeo. Due to an upgraded model launching in May, April sales for the Fiesta hit the wall due to lost production.

After a few months of increasing market share, Ford Australia sales fell 20% and lost market share. Imported models that had helped the gains in month’s past just could not help the sales drain from the Territory and Falcon in April. As said in reports in past months, these two RWD vehicles will likely not receive positive or neutral sales until their upgrades launch in the coming months.

Ford India sales increased, but not as much as the past year. This was a result of the Figo having been launched a year ago and a loss of production for domestic sales due to 1,500 units being shipped to Mexico.

Once again, the Thai-built Fiesta helped massive gains in the Pacific area. Increases of 82%, 313%, and 373% were recorded in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia respectively.

Markets included in this month were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
