As part of Ford's 15 new vehicles in China 2015, Ford today lifted the veil off the Ford Escort Concept, which will be seen on the Ford stand at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. Joining it will be the new Mondeo and Fiesta ST.

One of the fastest growing segments in China, the cheap compact segment is essential for Ford to enter into. Most likely designed by Ford of Australia, the Escort shares Ford's Kinetic design theme to the lower class market.

No engine availability was given, but we will learn more closer to when the production version launches.

That is **** nice, far better than the current car!! I like that they've smoothed it out some as the angular look of the current Focus!!

Wait, Escort? I was hoping this was the next gen Focus. I really like the more upmarket look to it!!!

well, this is a surprise
tho
I'm not crazy about it
http://home.surfree.com/~pauld/POUT.gif
the basic shape feels like a cheapening of the C1 Focus Concept (http://www.swedespeed.com/gallery/gallery2.php?mode=album&album=/Shared%20Platform%20Cars/Ford%20Focus%20%28P1%29/Focus%20Concept) that was shown in China way back when; but more ordinary & staid & boring
&but
the graphics feel so overdone and over-blinged, making the shape seem even cheaper in contrast

anyone know dimensions on this yet?
could it preview the Focus's MCE?

definitely makes the idea of Focus-based Mercury even more appealing!!!
imho

Slightly longer, for China's love of rear legroom.

&
imho the Focus with it's dumb blocky front seatbacks and weird under-the-rearseat-structure really needs more rear leg (& foot) room!!

When I asked during the Live Chat on how the Escort Concept fits the One Ford philosophy, Nigel Harris, Vice President, Sales and Service, Ford Asia Pacific was the one who replied, he said....
The Ford Escort concept is a design execution. It uses our Ford Global Design Language, something that can be applied to Ford vehicles all around the world. In the case of the concept here in China, we're using the opportunity of the Shanghai Auto Show to determine its ability to reach a new set of customers -- and its possible addition to the Ford portfolio. So it fits the One Ford concept well.

Focus sedan
http://photo.netcarshow.com/Ford-Focus_Sedan_2011_photo_0a.jpg

I like its design, I like how the Escort Concept's windshield is shorter and how the hood is a bit longer.
My one concern with the New Focus and many other new car designs is their windshield base is so far forward that the base of the A-pillar and the black triangle where the mirrors mount on to creates a big blind spot. Plus the moving the windshield base forward away from the driver creates useless space that has no benefit for passenger space.

I wonder if the next gen Focus sedan will be influenced by the Escort concept? ...or might even be the Escort?
Escort = sedan?
Focus = hatchback

This looks GREAT! MUCH better looking than the Focus. It's just a simple clean design where the Focus gets a bit too busy looking on the front and rear. I'm sure the rest of the world will get nice LED headlamps except for the USA like what happened on the new Fusion. If it ever makes it to the USA that is.

I don't see that happening simply because you now have two nameplates to market which is money wasted on what is still really one car.

The current Kinetic language is too angular for my tastes, to many hard edges and creases. I don't think styles that are so hard age as well as styles that rely on more subtle lines. In the two pictures AM222 posted the Focus screams for your attention while the Escort evokes refinement.

They need a cheap compact to reach the cheaper market in China. Escort is it. Focus will be the "regular" compact with the Escort underneath.

VW has the Lavida and Bora under the Golf.
Chevy will be launching the Cobalt under the Cruze.
Buick has the Excelle under the Excelle GT/XT.

and so on.

If I had to bet, the Escort will gain a hatch as well.

In terms of size, yes.
In terms of price, probably around or maybe even cheaper than the Fiesta.

I doubt it will be cheaper than the Fiesta, since it uses the more expensive platform of the Focus.

Kinda like the Toyota Auris (hatchback) & Toyota Corolla (sedan). Cars designed to be what they are from the start, one is designed as a sedan, one as a hatch, not just adding a trunk to a hatchback to make a sedan.
In most of Europe, the Focus is only available as a hatch and wagon.

Nice! It looks like this Escort is riding on the longer 105.9' wheelbase like the Escape. Unlike the current 104.3' wheelbase of the Focus Hatch/Sedan. Which could mean the next Focus for NA should have a longer wheelbase, offering the needed more back seat room. It's doubtful that the new US Focus would follow this design as the Escort, as it is to add to Ford's compact car lineup, not replace anything. Ford still makes our old Focus on China as the Focus Classic.

and not suggesting you're not right about it using the Escape's wlb
but
the C platform has shown others
106.9 - MKC Concept
109.8 - Grand C-Max

imho it'd be great if FoMoCo (finally) decided they are once again capable of a bit more "bespoke" construction (esp for Lincoln-Mercury naturally)

altho/also there's a slightly stretch EcoSport for China
99.6" wlb vs 98" elsewhere
so perhaps this Escort will stay in China??

ps1
wonder if Escort shows anything of what the Focus-based Mercury C557 would've looked like?

ps2
just want say again that this is still largely the previous generation C1 Chinese Focus - esp, the greenhouse is *unchanged* stylewise
and for all I know, mechanically...
...except for engines

Nice design. The more upright roof that this vehicle shows would work great as a Lincoln. Did anyone graft an MKZ front and rear on this yet? OR how about an abstract Versailles front and rear that fits with today's style? The rear could have a very slight arc that just hints at you know what and lights up as the 3rd brake light........

The Escort Concept is basically a less flashy more formal looking (roomier) LWB alternative to the sleek new Focus.

http://photo.netcarshow.com/Ford-Escort_Concept_2013_photo_05.jpg

Some reports say that if the new Escort is produced, it would most likely replace the old style Focus Classic (the Mk2 Focus that was never sold in the US & Canada) which is still being sold alongside the sleeker new global Mk3 Focus in China.

Ford Focus Classic (Mk2 Focus)

I also like the Escort Concept's more anglular less-Aston looking front end variation of the new Ford face.
Cold this be the face of the Focus facelift?
http://photo.netcarshow.com/Ford-Escort_Concept_2013_photo_01.jpg

The shape of the production Focus Electric's blocked out grill just looks awkward, its like a small pouty version of the new Ford grill.

Very good idea. A Lincoln . This car, with a new grille, tailligths and a good quality interior could be the compact Lincoln sedan. And Versailles is a perfect name

Funny that 2 years ago, the Focus was the newest looking model in the Ford car lineup, now it's one of the oldest looking models (aside from the Mustang) in the car lineup.

All I can say is, if Ford will give the current Focus the new Ford corporate face during its mid-cycle facelift, it better not look like the production Focus Electric! :lmao:

UPDATE! It looks like the new Escort cold make it to some European markets, but not in the UK (where they prefer hatches)

The new Ford Escort, unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show, could come to Europe.

The mid-size saloon concept caused a sensation in China when it was revealed that it would wear the famous badge.

And although a production version of the car would be aimed firmly at the Chinese market, there is potential for it to be sold elsewhere.

A senior Ford insider told Auto Express: "There's certainly been internal discussions about it .

"I for one would love to see it over here [in Europe]. There is definitely a place in the market for a lower-cost car to sit under the Focus.

"The key would be doing it without being seen to make the Ford brand any less desirable."

And new Ford UK chairman and MD Mark Ovenden confirmed that the new model wasn't intended as a China-only car when he spoke to Auto Express at a ceremony to mark the retiral of outgoing chairman Joe Greenwell.

[B]"It's a car initially for China," he said. "But it could work in other places."

Read more: New Ford Escort could come to Europe | Auto Express (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/focus/63686/new-ford-escort-could-come-europe#ixzz2RPUd1bTz)

I wonder, could "potential markets elsewhere" (eventually) also include South East Asia and South America too in the future?

True. I don't think Ford would develop an all-new model just for one specific market since it doesn't quite fit the "One Ford" philosophy. They'll most likely have to sell it in other similar markets where it has a potential to sell well.

The EcoSport is a good example, the 1st generation EcoSport was mainly for Brazil and other South American markets. Under "One Ford" the new 2nd generation EcoSport is also being introduced in Asia, South Africa and Europe.

I wonder how the demand of that model is in China, maybe they have extra manufacturing room for export. This is not GM's first time to export Chinese models though, they sold Chevy-badged "Buicks" to the Philippines in the early 2000's.

I think there's a big possibility that Ford would consider manufacturing the new Escort in regional plants like what they did with the EcoSport.
Has Ford ever exported models made in China before?

That also reminds me, Ford manufacturing the new Explorer in Russia was also quite unexpected.

Report from Argentina says it will be built there. They are switching over to new Focus now, so they still have C1 machinery in place for it. Escort was always popular in South America anyway, so not surprising.
