Now that the Fusion/Mondeo and MkZ are nearing completion. Ford is putting all efforts into the next stage of CD4 on the front burner. FIN has now learned of some interesting information of this product cadence.

As part of its ultra secretive nature, Ford has named this second wave of mid-size products simply CD4.2. This CD4 program, like CD4.1, will further combine the efforts of Ford's subsidiaries and in the process will save the company money.

According to a source connected with the program, the next Ford Edge - including MkX - and S-Max will use the same modified CD4 platform. We expect them not to share body styles however since this would compromise their current segments. All three should have their own "top hats."

This raises the question: Will the Edge be produced in Europe and/or the S-Max in North America? This is not yet known, but we will tell you either way when we find out. What we can tell you is that the current Edge was deeply wanted by Ford of Europe, but the lack of a diesel killed it. This is a problem that the next Edge will not have.

As we have already discussed, the next Ford Edge will carry on the process of the engine downsizing seen with the Fusion in that there is no current plans to offer a V6 engine in the vehicle. However, the platform will be capable of a V6 for the MkX will continue on offering a V6 like that of the 2013 Lincoln MkZ.

Ford has also started work on a CD4.3 wave. What vehicle(s) lie in store here? Little is known at this point.

Expect both the next Edge, MkX, and S-Max to debut sometime next year with sales starting in the late 2013/2014 period.

Ford sales in the first quarter of 2012 were a double-edged sword. Even with higher sales in North America, Europe and China dragged total sales downward. Ford will have many new products in the coming months to help remedy both problems.

Ford of Europe is experiencing weakening demands for their products as the debt crisis continues. There is glimmer of hope however out of the storm for market share is on the rise. Sales of vehicles like the Focus are gaining traction allowing for this increase.

Even though many companies are slowing development of models, or canceling them altogether, Ford of Europe is pulling a page out from Ford of North America’s handbook: When in recession, speed up development. Over the course of 2012 to the end of 2013, Europe will released all-new versions of the Ranger, Transit, Kuga, Mondeo, S-Max, and Galaxy with many other all-new, face lifted, or new derivatives of models coming as well.

One of the big reasons European margins are hurting is overcapacity. Ford will however be adding capacity. “Madness!” you say? Well Ford will be putting its cheap labor Romanian plant into full swing for the all-new B-Max. Instead of very low margins like that of competitors, Ford will be allowed to make more money for the vehicle than if it was made in Western Europe. Ford will also start production of two plants in Russia, which will produce vehicles like the Explorer and Transit.

Even if European sales stay at their low rates, Ford of Europe’s sales could actually rise a lot thanks to these new, “cheap” plants.

Ford of China’s sales fell 16% in the first quarter. This, however, can be contributed almost by the Ford Focus switchover. The all-new Ford Focus launched late in April and curved sales of the older model as customers waited for the improved third generation. The fall, however, does show a sour point at Ford China.

The Ford Focus makes up roughly one fourth of Ford’s Chinese sales. Any disruption in its chain causes the entire endeavor to show a loss. Even with Ford adding products like the Kuga, EcoSport, and Explorer this year and in 2013, Ford needs to diversify their Chinese lineup further. Three cars, in sedan and hatch, are not enough. Whether Ford needs to release cheaper cars in segments with the Ford brand or not, more cars from the A00 to the C segment (Chinese segmentation) is needed if Ford wants to grow is all fields of the Chinese auto industry.

Even with sales being lower due to debt and foreseeable product shifts, there were many bright lights in Ford’s sales. North American sales were up thanks to a lift in the United States. The biggest gainer in this market, and the world, was the Focus. The Focus was so popular in March that it likely scored over 100,000 units globally. Compared to the same period in 2011, 2012 saw sales of the Focus rise nearly 14% globally. Expect sales of the Focus to rise even more as plants in China and Thailand come online. Ford F-Series (North American), Explorer, and Edge all saw nice gains from the previous years.

Ford is not standing still. In the coming months, Ford will release the all-new B-Max in Europe and the all-new Ranger will start production and sales in South America. Ford of North America will start the global debut of the all-new Escape/ Kuga in May, while Ford Asia Pacific and Africa will have opened two all-new plants for the third gen Focus.

If you have any figures of markets not listed, please tell us in the comments section. Big thanks to Matt of Best Selling Cars.

The EPA has completed its final testing of the last new engine for the 2013 Escape. The figures come in line with what Ford expected for the small four cylinder.

The new 1.6L EcoBoost is officially rated at 23 city, 33 highway. This makes the Escape the most fuel efficient automatic compact crossover offered in the US. Note that this is explicitly for the automatic. The Mazda CX-5 still lays claim to the best overall, but that is with a manual. While Ford might not claim the highest number overall, automatics account for well over 90% of the US market.

As Ford also expected, the Escape's numbers also bet comparable configurations from the Honda CR-V, the best selling compact CUV in the world, and that of the Toyota Rav4.

All Escape power trains now come with 30 or more MPG highway. This is a considerable improvement from the last model which never came with a figure higher than 28 highway.

The 2013 Escape should start arriving on dealer lots within the first two weeks of May. All Escapes are now built in Louisville, Kentucky.

First seen as a slightly veiled concept in India, Ford today rolled out the all-new EcoSport in front of the world press for the Beijing International Auto Show. The EcoSport not only is a global vehicle destined for over 100 markets, but is the first such vehicle engineered by Ford of South America.

The second generation EcoSport is powered by an available 1.0L I3 EcoBoost engine, which Ford recently announced would also come to North America. This small engine is capable of 125 hp and is no bigger in length than a typical laptop computer.

Do not let the fact that this vehicle is intended for emerging markets fool you, the new EcoSport can be equipped with Sync, keyless start, and keyless entry. The top of the line trim will also be the expensive, and profitable, Titanium, which will be offered worldwide.

The EcoSport is one of three new utility models launching in China this year. This will include the locally made Kuga, same as our Escape, and the American-imported Explorer. These three join the imported Edge in expanding Ford's lineup in the fastest growing segment in the Chinese market.

Ford has announced that as of now, the Ford EcoSport will expand from its current plant in Brazil to also include China, Thailand, and India. The question that remains, would you also like to see it offered in North America and Europe? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Press Release:

Created for the urban environment, the all-new Ford EcoSport offers contemporary design, smart technologies and a high driving position – all in a compact, agile, fuel-efficient shape

Powered by an array of powertrains, including an all-new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost™ engine, the aerodynamically honed Ford EcoSport is designed to be a benchmark in fuel economy while giving customers the performance feel of a larger engine

Packed with aspirational appeal, craftsmanship and sophistication – including the Ford SYNC driver connect system with voice control – the all-new EcoSport offers a compelling alternative to the small car in big cities

BEIJING, April 22, 2012 – Ford today revealed the production version of the all-new Ford EcoSport and announced plans to build the compact, fuel-efficient urban SUV in China, in addition to India, Thailand and South America.

EcoSport’s global debut at the 2012 Auto China in Beijing means customers in China will soon be able to choose an aspirational sports utility vehicle alternative to a small car. The Ford EcoSport offers a confident stance, a high driving position and robust character on top of the agility, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency that comes with a compact footprint. It’s the perfect combination for the city – ready for work and ready for play.

Within a contemporary design aerodynamically honed for fuel economy, the EcoSport is full of smart technologies, features and craftsmanship that offer customers more than they would expect in this segment.

With a number of powertrain solutions, including Ford's newest, most advanced engine the 1.0-litre EcoBoost™, EcoSport is designed to be a benchmark in fuel efficiency. It also offers the Ford SYNC driver connect system with voice control and many other innovative features in a spacious and comfortable interior with new levels of craftsmanship as well as outstanding quietness and refinement.

“The Ford EcoSport reflects our commitment to serve our Ford customers in China and around the world with the cars, utilities and trucks they want and value,” said Joe Hinrichs, president, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa. “EcoSport delivers outstanding quality, great fuel efficiency with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, superior safety and really smart design with SYNC.”

The production reveal of EcoSport follows rapidly after the vehicle’s global preview in January at the Delhi Auto Expo as well as in Brazil, where Ford EcoSport was developed by a global Ford development team. In addition to production in Chongqing, the EcoSport will be manufactured in Camaçari, Brazil, Rayong, Thailand, and Chennai, India, and will be offered in nearly 100 markets globally.

EcoSport joins Ford’s family of small global vehicles, which will reach an annual production capacity of 2 million units by 2015.

“The all-new EcoSport is designed and engineered specifically for customers in global growth markets using Ford’s global SUV engineering expertise and reflecting our commitments for quality, leading fuel economy, safety and smart technology,” said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development. “We’re delivering innovative products like this to drive our global growth.”

EcoSport Titanium

Ford is showcasing its top-of-the-line model, the EcoSport Titanium, on stage in Beijing, painted in distinctive Mars Red. A similar model is being revealed today in Salvador, Brazil, as EcoSport’s global launch momentum builds.

EcoSport Titanium has 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels and a chrome grille.

Inside, EcoSport offers a stylish, modern and well-equipped interior delivering new standards of craftsmanship and quality. The cabin – spacious for five people and their gear – has been engineered to deliver outstanding levels of comfort and quiet operation for customers.

In addition to Ford SYNC with voice control, among EcoSport’s available innovative technologies are Smart Keyless Entry, Ford Power Start, and a cooled bin in the glovebox.

EcoSport offers advanced safety items, such as dual front airbags and side curtain airbags, as well as Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program.

To take the stress out of driving, the EcoSport comes with an array of driver-assist features including Hill Launch Assist and rear parking sensors.

Its agile, manoeuvrable chassis features electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) for outstanding steering response and improved fuel efficiency.

Beautiful, agile, modern

The new EcoSport is an affordable compact SUV that is ready for work and ready for play.

It targets benchmark performance in fuel economy, driveability and performance to redefine expectations in the compact SUV segment.

The new Ford SUV’s main characteristics were defined by consumers in all of the regions in which it will be sold. The design and flexible use are part of the new vehicle’s differentiated plan, which besides the agility and practicality for urban use, offers power and robustness for more adverse terrain.

The elevated stance and purposeful posture give the new EcoSport the appearance of a higher class vehicle. Its agile and contemporary lines convey confidence, refinement and an adventurous spirit, within a modern and smart package. All this contributes to EcoSport’s aspirational appeal.

"The new EcoSport is full of personality," said J Mays, group vice president, Design, and chief creative officer, Ford Motor Company. "Customers around the world immediately recognise its capability and SUV robustness that is achieved with aggressiveness. It is friendly and it’s a vehicle that really makes you smile.”

Powering growth in China

Reinforcing Ford’s commitment to offer a full portfolio of vehicles in China, the all-new Ford EcoSport will be the second of 15 new vehicles that Ford plans to introduce in the country by 2015. This is part of a bigger plan to bring more than 50 new vehicles and powertrains to the Asia Pacific and Africa region by mid-decade, underscoring the unprecedented expansion in the region.

“With its superior fuel efficiency and a comprehensive suite of smart technologies, the EcoSport is well-placed to power Ford into a new segment not only in China but also in other growth markets in Asia,” said Hinrichs.

Ford’s aggressive expansion plan in China is being supported by several new investments to increase production capacity.

It was announced earlier this month that Ford and its joint venture Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) will invest approximately USD 600 million to expand capacity in Chongqing by 350,000 passenger vehicles, raising total capacity in China to 950,000 units by 2014. The new investment will increase Ford’s total investment in China to approximately USD 4.1 billion.

CFMA already operates two assembly plants and an engine plant in Chongqing. Additional facilities – a USD 500 million engine plant and a USD 350 million transmission plant – are currently under construction.

FordInsideNews.com

This morning, the EPA finally released official MPG figures for the 2013 Escape. Due to the 1.6L I-4 EcoBoost's late availability, only the 2.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost's ratings were released. All the power train configurations see improvements over their 2008-2012 counterparts, when you take into effect transmissions.

The 2.5L with an automatic, which carries over with improvements for the last model, sees an improvement to 22/31/25. For comparison, the last model with this engine, though with a manual, saw 23/28/25. The one particular troubling part is to why the city fuel economy went down. The loss of the manual is the reason for this since only an automatic is now offered. The automatic did improve however, but not enough to take over the Honda CR-V's. Should have Ford continued to offer a manual in the Escape due to people seeing the lower standard city MPG? We will have to see.

The big improvement is in the V6 replacement 2.0L I-4 EcoBoost. The outgoing 3.0L V6 saw 19/25/21. The new EcoBoost with fuel saving technology now sees 22/30/25 MPG. This is a huge improvement across the board and should help sales of V6 equivalent models perhaps until the 1.6L EcoBoost comes online. To us, it would be hard to justify not buying the 2.0L EB with similar fuel economy, but more power, to the 2.5L I4.

With sales suppose to start early next month, we finally see the fuel economy of the new 2013 Escape. Do you think it is enough of an improvement? Tell us in the comments.

FordInsideNews.com
April 19, 2012

This morning Ford confirmed that the all-new Fox 1.0L Inline-3 EcoBoost engine will be offered in vehicles for North America next year. Though Ford had confirmed this engine in the past, it was unknown when it would launch.

This engine has already launched in the Focus and C-Max in Europe and will headline the engine lineup for the all-new B-max as well. This announcement did not say which North American vehicles would get the engine, but we already know these models anyway.

The face lifted Fiesta, which will launch around the same time in Europe as well, will receive this engine when it starts sales around this time next year.

The second vehicle is the Focus, which was confirmed to launch by 2015 in the UAW contract.

Ford also released some specs on the power train. The engine will be rated around 125 hp. This should allow it to be a competitive replacement for the 1.6L EcoBoost. Most amazingly, Ford says that the engine is around the same length of a laptop computer!

By the time 2015 rolls around, 90 percent of Ford's lineup will offer EcoBoost technology.

Press Release:

Ford offers seven vehicles with the smallest engines in their segments – more than any other competitor

Powered by EcoBoost®CO2 emissions while delivering the performance customers demand technology, Ford’s smaller engines help reduce vehicle weight for better fuel economy and lower

Ford’s smallest engine yet, the EcoBoost 1.0-liter three-cylinder, debuts in North America about a year from now

DEARBORN, Mich., April 19, 2012 – For decades, size meant everything when it came to engines – bigger was better and there was no replacement for displacement. But volatile gasoline prices and growing consumer interest in clean technologies are turning that notion on its head.

Today, buyers are snapping up cars and trucks powered by smaller engines that offer better fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.

When the EcoBoost®-equipped 2013 Fusion, Escape and 2.0-liter Taurus arrive on dealer lots this spring and summer, Ford will offer an industry-leading seven vehicles with the smallest engines in their segments – more than any competitor.

Ford’s new global family of EcoBoost engines offer customers more affordable, high-efficiency powertrain choices, along with Ford’s growing lineup of hybrid and electric models. On average, an EcoBoost engine can improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent, yet it costs around $1,000 on most vehicles.

Available now in displacements of 1.6, 2.0 and 3.5 liters, Ford’s EcoBoost engines are designed to offer drivers outstanding performance in everything from economy cars to trucks.

Most of the Ford vehicles with the smallest engines in their segments – 2013 Escape and 2013 Fusion (1.6 liters); Explorer, Edge and Taurus (2.0 liters); and Interceptor and F-150 (3.5 liters) – deliver the same or greater power than the larger, heavier engines in competitive vehicles, along with higher fuel economy.

Replacing large engines with smaller-displacement EcoBoost engines is one way Ford is delivering on its promise to lead or be among the leaders in fuel economy in every segment in which it competes.

As with cell phones, laptops and other consumer electronics, Ford’s engines will continue to shrink – yet become more powerful – in the coming years.

The next new EcoBoost engine scheduled for launch in North America, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder coming in 2013, will be Ford’s smallest yet. This compact, innovative engine – which is the same length as the average laptop computer – is rated at 125 horsepower, making it one of the highest output-per-liter regular production engines Ford has ever made.

This year, Ford Motor Company will offer EcoBoost engines in 12 Ford and Lincoln nameplates – Focus ST, 2013 Fusion and Escape, Taurus, Interceptor, Flex, Edge, Explorer and F-150, as well as the latest Lincoln MKT and MKS models and the all-new Lincoln MKZ.. By 2015, the company plans to offer an EcoBoost engine on 90 percent of its North American nameplates.

Light + small + power = better
In addition to developing more horsepower per liter than the larger engines they are replacing, EcoBoost motors are helping Ford reduce vehicle weight, which improves handling and braking and helps increase fuel economy.

The 2013 Escape and Fusion models provide a graphic example of why Ford’s new generation of smaller, lighter and more powerful engines are better. In the 2012 Escape and Fusion, the 3.0-liter V6 engine is rated at 240 horsepower and 223 lb.-ft. of torque. That engine weighs 340 pounds.

The new 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that is optional in the 2013 Escape and Fusion is rated at 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque and it weighs 295 pounds, 45 pounds less than the old 3.0-liter. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine available in both vehicles delivers 178 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft of torque and weighs just 223 pounds.

Since launching EcoBoost in summer 2009, Ford has sold more than 180,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles in North America, making it the most rapidly adopted fuel-saving technology in recent automotive history.

According to Ward’s sales data, it took Toyota 50 months, for example, to sell 100,000 gasoline-electric hybrids in North America. And Ford’s EcoBoost lineup outsells all competitors’ diesel, compressed natural gas and battery-electric cars combined.

EcoBoost is a suite of technologies that combines turbocharging with direct injection, variable valve timing and precise engine controls to increase the power output and efficiency of the gasoline internal combustion engine. The increased power output enables Ford to replace a V8 engine with a V6, a V6 with a four-cylinder and a four-cylinder with a three-cylinder – with no loss of performance.

“The F-150 is a great example of how EcoBoost is changing the way customers think of our engines,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “Before we launched the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, few people would have believed a V6 was tough enough to get the job done in a full-size truck. The last time a six-cylinder engine outsold a V8 in the F-150 was in the late 1980s.

“But with 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, towing capacity as much as 11,300 pounds and EPA highway fuel economy of 22 mpg, the EcoBoost V6 has quickly become the top-selling engine in the F-150,” said Bakaj. Just over 40 percent of F-150s are sold with an EcoBoost engine, he added.

EcoBoost Edge is another small-engine success story. With a nearly 20 percent take rate, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Edge is exceeding sales projections.

Ford EcoBoost engines are also proving popular in Europe, where the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder units are offered across several nameplates, and the all-new 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost has met with unanimous acclaim.

At next week’s Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress at Cobo Center in Detroit, Ford executives will be giving presentations that outline Ford Motor Company’s powertrain strategy.

At the 2013 North American Auto Show, Ford rolled out the new Fusion Energi, which is the first plug-in hybrid in its class. As with the Hybrid, many expected that the MkZ would follow the Fusion and receive this new powertrain. However, this will not be the case for now.

Though we knew that an MkZ Plug-in was not in the cards currently, we had heard the plan was to hear from the customers before they would decide to put it in the luxury car. This is half the story.

At the New York International Auto Show, FIN talked to the Fusion’s Marketing Manager, Samantha Hoyt. She mentioned that the MkZ receiving the Fusion Energi’s engine is dependent upon the sales of the Ford plug-in. In other words, if Fusion Energi sales are where Ford is expecting them to be, the likelihood of an MkZ plug-in being built will be low. If the Energi’s sales are lower, expect Lincoln to rush out its version to bring in the revenue that the company needs for a return on the investment.

We can also tell you that all MkZ production will stay in Mexico even with Fusion adding production to Flat Rock Assembly in Michigan. She said that Ford plans on a large percentage increase in production for the 2013 Lincoln MkZ, which will hopefully lead to a sales increase as well.

Even if sales of the Fusion Energi are high and exceed Ford’s expectations, we hope that customer and online feedback will force Lincoln to offer a plug-in for the MkZ.

Now with the Fusion and Mondeo merging, many had hoped that more versions of the Fusion would be offered due to the customer focuses that the Mondeo must cover in Europe. Sadly, FordInsideNews can confirm that this will not be the case.

Samantha Hoyt, the Fusion’s Marketing Manager and former engineer of the vehicle, talked to FIN about the reason for this decision.

She explained that even though the Fusion/ Mondeo was developed by Ford of North America that they could not make a solid business plan for the two body styles in their birthplace.

As everyone knows these types of vehicles do not sell practically well outside of particular college towns in the country. Basically, the investment into the two models could not foster a return. In the end, the Fusion and Mondeo will have 80-percent parts sharing.

Also, we can confirm that contrary to one site that jumped the gun, the Mexican plant receiving an expansion for the Fusion and MkZ does not mean that the adding of Fusion production to Flat Rock is cancelled. In fact Ford is planning on at least one shift in the factory with the door left open for a possible second shift.

Flat Rock, as she told us, will begin production by mid to late 2013 after Mazda6 production has moved out and retooling has been completed. With the addition of Michigan production, Ford is planning on increasing export sales by large percentages to countries in Latin America and the Middle East from the plant in Mexico.

With the Focus and Fiesta adding production to Thailand for the ASEAN market, speculation has lead to the possibly of the Mondeo being built in the nation as well. However, as of this point in time, Ford has no plans to build it in this large Australian exporting market.

Ford has big expectations for the Fusion and Mondeo, but they are not as big as some of us would like. As it is the vehicle will give us the greatest amount of choices no matter where you live in the world for Ford's past efforts in the mid-size car segment.

Not long ago, Lincoln set out to reinvent itself in the eyes of the customer. At the New York International Show, they showed their first full effort with the all-new MkZ. To debut the car, Ford and Lincoln brought out many high level executives and moved their Lincoln stand away from Ford to separate the two brands.

Seeing the MkZ only in pictures does not do the new design justice. One needs to see it in person to appreciate not only the overall design, but the subtle cravings as well.

The new bow wave grill gives a much more authentic face to the brand than the past “cheese grater” or “baleen” designs. The horizontal lines fan out from the grill. Much like a wave, each piece has a curve in it that gives the grill more dimensions. The LED headlights

Moving onto the side, the grooves in the profile expand deeper along the length of the vehicle to give the vehicle large hips and a more aero look at a ¼ view of the vehicle.

The top half of the rear is very good looking with the thin body wide taillights. These taillights are highly stylized. The rear window design extends into the truck. Though this is not really glass, it still complements the design of the fenders very well. This also helps cover up the radio which had to be moved here due to the full glass roof.

The bottom of the rear is where things get dicey. Even though the tailpipes are integrated and have a nice design, the surrounding area is completely cheap black plastic. You would think with Lincoln wanting to hit the luxury market hard with the new MkZ, that this area would at least be painted. This leaves us with a very uneasy feeling due to the fact the all-new Fusion does not have this and has more put together, luxurious look to the lower rear end.

The interior is a pretty much a carry over from the concept shown in Detroit. Thanks to the gear shifter moving out of the center console, the area under it is now free and offers huge amounts of carrying space for bags, etc. The loss of the shifter also gives a more open feel to a front seat driver.

On short inspection of the seats, we found them comfortable enough, but we do think they could still use more padding. We believe this shortcoming is a result of some sharing still conducted with the Fusion.

Perhaps the most noticeable and annoying quality issue with the next MkZ is in the rear seat. Instead of extending the side of the bench seat to the door opening, Lincoln took the cheap route. This pre-production model, so hopefully this could change, had cheap plastic in this all-important place, which gave an unsettling feeling when getting into the rear passenger door. For instance, the new Chevy Impala had the seats extended to the doors. If a budget minded Impala can have a better quality back seat, there is no excuse for Lincoln to have it as well.

All in all, the Lincoln MkZ is an impressive start for Ford’s next mountain to climb. The next steps for Lincoln need to be to build upon this sound foundation and climb the rest of the way hopefully to the top of the luxury mountain.

Starting from the beginning of the Explorer’s life, the vehicle has been a stereotype for the typical soccer mom SUV. Now with the new fifth generation of the Explorer, Ford is looking to expand the breath of the SUV’s customer base with the new Sport model.

Even taking a quick glance upon the Explorer Sport one is able to easily recognize that this is not a normal Explorer. The vehicle’s new blacked out grill and wheels borrowed from the Flex really set it apart. The design is not that of a sleeper- it truly does look sporty in nature.

Above the grill comes perhaps the vehicle’s signature note that sets off the rest of the vehicle. “Explorer” is written on the hood, much like that of the Explorer America Concept and the 2013 Flex. This actually draws some of your attention away from the grill and to the powerdome hood where the beast that powers the Explorer Sport resides.

The new Sport is powered by the same 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost like that found in the F-150 and Ford Flex. Whereas those come with 365 and 355 horsepower respectively, the Explorer Sport is estimated to get 350 horsepower.

FordInsideNews.com had the pleasure of talking to the vehicle engineering manager of the Explorer Sport, Carl Widmann, to explain the horsepower and other questions.

According to Widmann, the Explorer has more exhaust flow restriction versus other 3.5-liter EcoBoost models, which explains the lower horsepower rating. He also explained that engineers wanted a more refined ride in the vehicle compared to other models with the engine. What matters is, of course, the actual performance of the vehicle. The Explorer Sport cuts the normal model’s 0-60 time by two seconds.

One of the many complaints with the normal Explorer has been the lack of braking power. To fix this aspect and also accommodate the Sport’s 250-pound weight gain, engineers increased the brakes thermal efficiency by 50-percent and the actual size of the brakes by 20-percent. The tires treed was also increase by one inch from 8.5 inches to 9.5 inches to help not only in braking power, but also to increase acceleration.

Widmann also explained that thanks to the new engine and a broader torque curve, engineers were able to reprogram the Explorer’s Terrain Management System to improve not only the road performance, but also off-road as well. Thanks to this, depending on the program a driver uses, the Sport’s rear wheels can receive up 80-percent of the power. Along with a heavily revised suspension, the Ford engineers believe that the Sport can be a true off-road vehicle.

Basically the Explorer Sport is meant to be the median between rivals like that of the Durango and the future Jeep Wagoner. Make no mistake; Ford brought this vehicle to the market thanks directly to customer response and online feedback asking for more power in the Explorer. Ford listened and they believe the 2013 Explorer Sport is the answer.

For the past decade and a half, truck makers have been selling higher levels of trucks to people who do not need them by offering trims that appeal to them. The new 2013 F-Series Super Duty is the next and perhaps best offering to this type of customer yet. This is the second vehicle carrying the trim after the F-Series F-150 launched for the 2009 model year.

Whereas the King Ranch is meant for rhinestone cowboys on a ranch, the Platinum is directly targeted at a street driver that needs the truck every so often.

This Platinum carries a satin metal finish grill that is exclusive to this trim. If you thought the lower trim grill gives the Super Duty presence, you have not seen anything yet. The grill and the chrome tow hooks gives this Super Duty the most “bling” on any Ford truck yet.

With chrome running rails, “Platinum” written on the side, and large chrome bar on the tailgate carry on the front end’s styling to the max. The wheels are chromed out and have retro styled “Ford” written in the center.

The entire range of the Super Duty has been updated with the center stack found in the Platinum. MyFord Touch is now offered, but has been updated for the truck to accommodate the feel of work gloves. The entire new look of the center console is a very big improvement over the last year’s model, which was rather slab-sided.

To cut it straight, the new Platinum is a way to offer truck buyers more options. In turn, Ford can count on this new trim to literally print money for the company.
Today, Ford previewed the first Explorer to come with a performance model. The Explorer Sport will make its way into showrooms with the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine and a host of model special modifications over the normal vehicle.

First off, this Explorer Sport should not be confused with the 2 door model that use to carry the same name, this "Sport" has a beefed up suspension and modifications to its Terrain Management System to run in conjuncture with the new EcoBoost engine.

On the outside, the Explorer Sport is easily recognizable from the normal Explorer with a black mesh grill and darkened head and tail lights. The inside has added unique stitching to the steering wheel and charcoal leather seats.

The Explorer Sport will be in dealerships later this year. FIN will make sure to bring you full coverage of the new vehicle, including live pictures, from the New York International Auto Show next week.

Press Release:

Ford Explorer Sport is a new addition for the 2013 model year, featuring EcoBoost® 3.5-liter V6 engine for greater performance feel and projected top fuel economy among gasoline-powered, high-performance sport utility vehicles

Explorer Sport gives customers an interior inspired by designer accessory fashions, sporty exterior design cues and specially tuned suspension components

DEARBORN, Mich., March 28, 2012 – The first-ever performance version of the Ford Explorer arrives this year with the highest projected fuel economy among gasoline-engine-powered, high- performance SUVs.

With a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost® V6 engine making at least 350 horsepower and four-wheel drive with a Terrain Management System™, Explorer Sport delivers enhanced on-road dynamics with sporty design cues inside and out.

“Adding an EcoBoost drivetrain to Explorer Sport delivers even more fuel efficiency and performance to the lineup,” said Bill Gubing, Explorer chief engineer. “This is our highest- performance, most capable Ford Explorer ever.”

Power, capability, fuel efficiency
Completely new for 2011, the Ford Explorer has been winning over customers with its improved on-road handling, impressive comfort and convenience technologies, and fuel economy never before delivered by an SUV.

For the 2013 model year, Explorer Sport brings high-performance SUV power and projected fuel economy of up to 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway – anticipating 3 mpg better in the city and 2 mpg on the highway than the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango R/T 5.7-liter Hemi engines. It scores 3 mpg higher in the city and 4 mpg higher on the highway than the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

“Explorer Sport makes no compromises,” said Carl Widmann, vehicle engineering manager. “By carefully beefing the chassis and suspension, precisely calibrating the Terrain Management System and adding comfort and convenience features, we’ve delivered an SUV that delivers great dynamics and performance – while towing up to 5,000 pounds.”

The Explorer Sport features a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmission with a unique 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio to provide the balance of responsive acceleration and economical low-rpm cruising for better fuel efficiency.

The chassis also has been specially reinforced, making Explorer Sport stiffer and improving its handling.

Explorer Sport also brings a solid-mounted electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) rack with a faster ratio, providing more responsiveness to drivers both on-road and off.

Ford’s newest SUV comes standard with larger brakes for shorter stopping distances and better performance while towing.

Explorer Sport also has received special terrain management settings for tackling sandy, snowy, rutted mud and hill descent.

“Upgrading to Sport specification enabled us to maintain the standards of traditional Explorer capability plus delivering the highest highway fuel efficiency among gasoline-engine-powered, high-performance, three-row SUVs,” Widmann said.

Subtle, sporty design elements
Sport builds on Explorer’s muscular, sculpted form with subtle cues to differentiate it from other models in the lineup. Available in four exterior colors – Ruby Red Metallic Clearcoat, White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat, Tuxedo Black Metallic and Ingot Silver Metallic – Explorer Sport has unique 20-inch painted and machined wheels, features blacked-out headlamp and taillamp treatments, black roof rack rails, sideview mirror skull caps and a liftgate appliqué.

The Explorer Sport’s special grille is a low-gloss Sterling Gray mesh, with contrasting ebony high-gloss bars. The black front lower fascia features a functional opening for additional cooling. Explorer logotype in billet-like black adds a bold identity statement. Subtle Sport and EcoBoost badges at the rear finish the liftgate.

Inside, the high-end feel continues. Charcoal Black leather-trimmed seating is available with and without contrasting Sienna inserts.

The interior design contrast was inspired by fashion, mirroring two-tones that are currently seen in leather accessories and apparel from design houses Balenciaga and Prada. Stitching is emphasized to lend a handcrafted appearance while highlighting Explorer Sport’s sculptured seats.

Explorer Sport also has unique steering wheel stitching, a technical look to instrument and door panel appliqués, unique Sport-logo floor mats and illuminated scuff plates.

Comfort, convenience, connectivity
As the top of the Explorer line, Sport offers a robust array of standard and optional customer-focused technologies that make driving more comfortable, convenient and connected. These include:

4WD with Terrain Management System

Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control

10-way power driver’s seat with power recline and lumbar

Six-way power passenger seat with recline and lumbar

First-row heated seats

Compass and exterior temperature display

Rear view camera

SYNC® with MyFord Touch® driver connect technology

Sony® Premium Audio System with HD Radio™ and 12 speakers

Explorer Sport can be tailored to individual preferences with the following options as well:

Active park assist

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert

Inflatable rear seat belts

110-volt outlet

PowerFold mirrors

Intelligent access with Push-Button Start

Remote Start

Adjustable pedals with memory

Dual-panel moonroof

Power liftgate

Class III trailer-towing package

one thing that really bugs me is
Lincoln's apparent lineup, circa Dec.2012/Jan.2013, is like a design graveyard - of interest only to automotive-anthropologists!

In this charged political climate, it can be easy for misinformation to abound on the internet about politically sensitive automobiles. Those looking for headlines and traffic and do not have the gumption to tell the truth can make waves through the public. Such is the case as most of you are aware with the Chevy Volt. But, yesterday it took a new corner and the Ford Focus Electric took its turn in the misinformation merry-go-round.

A report, if you want to even go that far, came out of GreenCarReports.com and said, to the effect, that the Focus Electric was basically a failure already in the marketplace. This ultra opportunistic piece mentioned that the car only had 10 “sales” so far and compared it to the first three months of sales of the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf.

In what amounts to GreenCarReports failing to do their due-diligence and research on the car, they ran this story to make an untruthful headline. First, formal sales of the Focus Electric have not started; they start in a couple of months. These pre-sales that the site mentioned were merely nothing more than what should be called “PR sales.” They were basically just for Ford to get the word out about the new electric car. This can be seen by the press release from Ford upon a Focus Electric going to Google.

That Ford Focus Electric was delivered to Google before sellable production of the vehicle even started. The vehicle's production started on Dec. 14. With a normal new vehicle's production from Ford taking 4-6 weeks from start of production to being on the lots ready to sell, it would be impossible for Ford to sell units in December as the article states. In fact, it would most likely be impossible for Ford to sell any in January due to holiday production stoppage. Add to that Ford only started building a few at the start of production in December due to the complexity of building a type of vehicle that they have never done before. Due to the slow ramp up, it is most likely that production units had not been shipped out even by the end of February. Nationwide dealer inventory still shows zero units in stock. For the months of December and January, Ford never mentioned any sales of the Focus Electric in their press releases on monthly sales, which Ford would seeing the importance of this car.

Second, GreenCarReports failed to realize that those “sales” happened before the EPA gave fuel economy equivalents for the car. The EPA did not announce ratings until March 2nd. It is against the law to sell a car before the EPA has finalized and released their data. In a piece written by Consumer Guide, it states:

"Manufacturers are required by law to post their vehicles' fuel-economy ratings, as certified by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), on the window stickers of most every new vehicle sold in the U.S. -- vehicles that have gross-vehicle-weight ratings over 8,500 pounds are the exception."

How could Ford have sold even one unit of the Focus Electric when the EPA just announced the ratings? In other words, those 10 vehicles delivered were not even production models, but pre-production units.

Even if the Ford Focus Electric had already gone on sale, even if sales of the car were truly this low, it is too soon to make an assumption of failure. In this age of gas price swings and economic instability, one should not call a vehicle a failure until a full year of true, full sales have been tabulated. Furthermore, when sales actually start, do not expect them to be jumping off the lots in huge numbers due its availability. The Focus Electric will only start sales in three markets unlike the five for the Nissan Leaf and seven for the Chevy Volt.

Just because an article might bring in traffic due to the issue it discusses does not mean a story should run if it is filled with as much deceit as with this one. This story simply belongs in a death pit of automotive journalism, probably were a lot of the Volt’s headlines belong as well.

FIN wants to set the record straight and when we see such egregious misinformation, whether it be pro on con against Ford, we will call it out.

A week after releasing a teaser photo, Ford took the wraps off the new 2013 Super Duty on the Professional Bull Rider's website this morning. Ford has given the Super Duty new features, a new model, and an updated interior.

Starting with the new features, Ford is now making available MyFord Touch in the Super Duty. Coupled with Sync, Ford has optimized the systems for truck drivers. The knobs and buttons for the Super Duty were designed with gloves in mind. Even the 8 inch touch screen's sensitivity was modified to respond with gloves. MyFord Touch comes standard on the Platinum and is available on lower end models

In response to the huge sales and profits resulting from the F-150 Platinum, the 2013 Super Duty adds this model as well. This model receives a satin chrome grill with other chrome accents throughout the exterior. The tailgate has been redesigned to accommodate the retro broad chrome bar across it. Inside, the interior was given a more luxurious feel and materials. Platinum is written on the seats and on the side of the bed to make an owner's statement of what he drives.

As mentioned, the interior now has MyFord Touch. Doing so, Ford redesigned the center stack to accommodate the system.

Expect to see the new 2013 Super Duty at dealerships later this year. The Super Duty might also be joined by a freshened 2013 F-150 as well.

Press Release:

2013 Ford F-Series Super Duty brings no-compromise truck luxury to the market with the first-ever Platinum heavy-duty pickup, complete with unique design cues inside and out

Super Duty Platinum will offer a wealth of standard features including SYNC®, MyFord Touch®, navigation, rear view camera, Remote Start System, power-telescoping mirrors and power-adjustable pedals

For the first time, the 2013 F-Series Super Duty will also be available with a truck-specific version of SYNC with MyFord Touch, offering tactile button controls and large rotating knobs to accommodate truck users who may be wearing work gloves

DEARBORN, Mich., March 9, 2012 – Ford F-Series Super Duty customers demand a truck with toughness and capability, yet they still appreciate the amenities that make their driving experience more enjoyable. The 2013 F-Series Super Duty offers both, with a first-ever Platinum series model and the addition of SYNC® with MyFord Touch®.

“The F-Series Super Duty Platinum is the latest expression of Built Ford Tough truck luxury,” said Brian Rathsburg, F-Series Super Duty Marketing manager. “It has a distinct appearance and a long list of features to deliver a superior experience. Along with that, it has all of the capability F-Series trucks are famous for.”

Building on the success of the F-150 Platinum light-duty series that debuted in 2009, the F-Series Super Duty Platinum offers customers the ultimate in truck luxury.

Ford pioneered the high-end luxury truck segment in 1999 when it introduced the special-edition 2000 Harley-Davidson F-150. In 2003 the first King Ranch Super Duty arrived, followed by the 2004 Harley-Davidson Super Duty. Today, Ford sells a rich mix of high-end Lariat and King Ranch Super Duty models; the new Platinum will further meet the growing luxury needs of customers and dealers.

Available only in the Super Duty crew cab, it can be ordered as an F-250, F-350 or F-450 pickup and with the Ford-designed and Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine or the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine.

The Platinum series makes a bold statement with a grille that features a satin chrome surround highlighted by perforated mesh inside. The updated grille is enhanced by a monochromatic bumper and chrome tow hooks.

The exterior of the Super Duty Platinum is lavished in chrome, including the door handles, mirror caps, running boards and exhaust tip. The boxside on both sides of the truck sports the “Platinum” name in chrome letters and the tailgate is trimmed with a satin chrome appliqué, similar to the one used on the F-150 Platinum. Twenty-inch polished-aluminum wheels with painted black inserts round out the stunning exterior design of the Super Duty Platinum.

The interior showcases luxury in the form of unique wood grain appliqués. The steering wheel is heated and leather-wrapped, with genuine wood accents. The instrument panel, center stack and door trims are wrapped in premium wood grain. A new storage area on top of the dash includes two USB ports, audio-video connections, SD card slot and a 12-volt charging port for cell phones and other digital devices.

The driver’s seat has 10-way power-adjustable seating and both captain’s chairs are upholstered with softer, premium leather, which is also used on the armrests and console. Other evidence of fine craftsmanship includes the seats and floor mats, which feature the embroidered “Platinum” logo.

Other standard features include:

SYNC with MyFord Touch

Navigation System

Power-adjustable pedals

Rear view camera

Remote Start System

Universal garage door opener

Power-telescoping mirrors

Super Duty Platinum is available in Ruby Red, Kodiak Brown, Tuxedo Black, Ingot Silver and White Platinum. Interior color offerings include Pecan and Midnight Black. Another new exterior color, Blue Jean Metallic, will be available for Super Duty models other than Platinum.

Working harder and smarter
Unlike the past when a truck was often little more than a spartan work vehicle, today’s truck customers won’t compromise, and they expect capability, efficiency and refinement. The 2013 F-Series Super Duty eliminates any thought of compromise.

Standard Ford SYNCbrings award-winning voice-controlled connectivity into the cab of the most capable heavy-duty trucks available. With SYNC, Super Duty drivers can connect compatible mobile phones and media players via Bluetooth® or USB to make calls and play back music using voice control. In addition, drivers will get access to Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist®, both no-charge lifetime features, and SYNC Services including traffic alerts, business search and more – all while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The 2013 F-Series Super Duty builds on the foundation of SYNC with MyFord Touch, which is available for the first time. A new 8-inch, high-resolution touch screen display gives drivers easy access to phone, climate control, entertainment and navigation features along with a dramatically expanded voice control vocabulary.

The 8-inch display screen also provides a large, clear view behind the truck when in reverse to help drivers maneuver in tight spaces or line up conventional trailers with the truck’s hitch.

Unique to Ford F-Series, designers have optimized the physical interface for MyFord Touch to accommodate truck users who may be wearing work gloves by providing easy access to climate controls and audio presets on the center stack. For video of MyFord Touch in Super Duty, click here.

The latest example of F-Series leadership in truck design, innovation and technology can be found in the 2013 Super Duty Platinum, available later this year.

Ford Releases the Fiesta ST Upon Europe
Euro Spec Model to be followed by North American Spec
March 5, 2011
FordInsideNews.com

Today, Ford of Europe released photos and information on the production version of the Euro spec Fiesta ST just ahead of the Geneva auto show. First seen as a concept at last year's Frankfurt show, little has changed from that "concept" to production.

On the outside, the grill has been given the Focus ST's mouth, which can also be seen on the new Fusion. Out back, new taillights can be seen which should give us some idea as to the updates coming for the non-ST Fiesta later this year.

The Euro spec ST will only be available in the 3 door hatch, unlike the Focus ST which is offered in both 5 door and wagon variants.

The inside has seen updates as well. Gone are the phone inspired controls on the dash and in their place is the MyFord Touch interface. The seats have also been thrown out to be replaced by Recardos as with the Focus ST.

Under the hood lies the 1.6 I4 EcoBoost engine which should make in excess of 160 hp. Torque vectoring and a special chassis made for the ST set this apart from the non-sport variants.

The Fiesta ST will go on sale in Europe sometime in 2013. We expect the North American spec ST to debut in New York or Los Angeles in the fall. One thing is known however, the NA spec will only be offered with a 5 door hatch.

Press Release:

Dynamic new Fiesta ST unveiled as a production-ready model at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and confirmed for introduction in Europe in 2013

New Fiesta ST is powered by a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that delivers 180PS – 20 per cent more power than the previous model – accelerates 0-100km/h in less than seven seconds and can reach a top-speed of 220km/h-plus

Class-leading driving dynamics delivered by enhanced Torque Vectoring Control system, specially-tuned chassis and three Electronic Stability Control settings – all tested extensively at Germany’s world-famous Nürburgring Nordschleife

Ford remains open to the idea of introducing the high-performance small car to North America for the first time, following a positive response to the five-door Fiesta ST concept at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

GENEVA, Switzerland, March 5, 2012 – Ford Motor Company is unveiling the new production-ready Fiesta ST at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in advance of the performance hatchback’s launch in Europe in 2013.

Customers have clamoured for a new Fiesta ST since the last model disappeared from European showrooms in 2008. The all-new model will take Fiesta ST performance to a new level. The numbers tell the story: 180PS 1.6-litre EcoBoost, 240Nm of torque, 0-100km/h in under seven seconds, and top speed of more than 220km/h. At the same time, the EcoBoost technology delivers a 20 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with the previous Fiesta ST.

Developed by Ford’s Team RS, the new Fiesta ST delivers significant ride-and-handling improvements through the introduction of a specially tuned chassis that sits 15mm lower than the standard Fiesta; Ford’s enhanced Torque Vectoring Control system; and three Electronic Stability Control modes. The technologies were put to the test over 5000 kilometers of driving on Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife.

“We believe Ford customers will be blown away by the new Fiesta ST, and not only by the exhilarating performance but by the styling and specification, too. This dynamic new hot-hatch is undoubtedly our best Fiesta ST to date,” said Jost Capito, Ford’s director of Global Performance Vehicles.

The high-contrast interior features unprecedented levels of equipment and specification to suit the sporting driver, with standard Recaro sports seats appearing in a Fiesta ST for the first time. It also will be equipped with MyKey, which allows owners to limit performance and ensure activation of safety features for when less-experienced drivers use the vehicle; and SYNC, Ford’s voice-activated in-car connectivity system. A new bold and dynamic exterior design drives home the high performance message and features the latest Ford design signatures including a large trapezoidal grille.

The new Fiesta ST was engineered using Ford’s global Performance Car DNA and developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of the company’s Global Performance Vehicles group.
The experience of the engineering team in working with Ford’s motorsport partners to develop the Fiesta RS WRC, Fiesta Rallycross and Racing Fiesta vehicles, also proved invaluable for developing the new Fiesta ST.

With production of the new Fiesta ST confirmed for Europe, Ford also remains open to the idea of introducing the high-performance small car to other regions, including North America for the first time following a highly positive response to the five-door Fiesta ST concept that made its North American debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

“We’re delighted to be bringing a new generation Fiesta ST to our European enthusiasts in 2013 and we’ll have more to say about our plans for other markets in the near future,” said Capito. “With the Fiesta ST joining the new Focus ST, we will again be able to deliver a choice of affordable small performance cars that are designed to deliver a unique blend of stand-out styling and dynamic on-road performance with true practicality for everyday use.”

2011 turned into a mediocre year for Ford globally as not many new products debuted as with the past few years. Sales were however up nearly 400,000 units over 2010 on a worldwide basis. Headwinds caused by the Euro crisis and flooding in Thailand hurt sales later in the year.

The biggest debut by far this year was the third generation Focus that launched into Europe, North America, and other smaller regions. Other smaller debuts were the new Cargo, Territory, and new engines for the Explorer, Edge, and F-150.

North America

US sales for the Ford brand made it the best selling brand in the country and passed the 2 million mark for the first time in several years. Sales were largely improved due to the Explorer, Fusion, Escape, and F-Series trucks.

Canadian sales did not see the large gains that they had seen in recent years as Ford’s domestic competitors regained traction following their bankruptcies. However, Ford was able to keep themselves as the nation’s largest seller of vehicles.

Ford was the leading provider of full size trucks of any company on the continent as F-Series sales once again held off the combined efforts from the Silverado and Sierra.

Ford of Mexico added the Indian-built Figo as the Ikon. Sales were once again rather stagnating due to the loss of F-Series. The F-Series has become associated with the drug cartels.

South America

Venezuela had a big year in sales thanks to the new generation Explorer and Super Duty launching into the market. Ford remained a strong #2 in sales and gained market share.

Sales in Brazil were not as robust as in 2010. This was caused by the age of Ford products finally catching up to them with competitors launching newer products. The one bright spot was the new Cargo, which launched mid-year. This allowed Ford to gain share in this area. Also in 2011, Ford launched the Mexican-built Fiesta hatch and facelifted the locally built Ka. 2012 should bring improved sales as the all-new EcoSport, Ranger, and Fusion debut.

Argentine sales were up with the market as the nation’s economy came back to life following the past few years. Ford launched the facelifts for the Mondeo and S-Max in 2011.

Europe

As mentioned, the Euro crisis took its toll on Ford sales. It was not as bad as some makers, but it largely hit some of Ford’s more elderly models like those riding on EUCD.

To prepare itself for future gains, Ford Russia entered in a joint venture with Sollers. This partnership will become clearer in a few months as its product offensive begins. This will include local production of the Transit and Explorer.

Ford was once again the best selling brand in the UK where the Fiesta and Focus took the top two spots. The Transit Connect also saw gains in its home market of Turkey to become the nation’s bestseller.

Asia Pacific and Africa

For the first time, most nations of the Middle East are included into the numbers. The most eye-popping stat came from Saudi Arabia. This country was home to the second largest market for the outgoing Crown Victoria with over 16,000 sales. It will be a tough challenge for the Taurus to make up for these sales. Saudi Arabia was also home to the second and third largest markets for the Expedition and Explorer.

Ford was the best seller among non-domestic producing companies in Morocco, while in Egypt, Ford largest seller turned out to be the Chinese built JMC Boadian.

Indian home sales were actually down due to lack of bank lending and higher gas prices. However, thanks to the exportation of the Figo, Indian production sales were up.

Ford sales throughout the South Pacific were up for the greater part of the year due to the Thai production of the Fiesta. The flooding in this production center hit these markets hard later in the year.

One of the interesting debuts in this area was the debut of the Explorer into the Philippines in October.

Australia had both a good and troubling year. The new Territory launched to successful sales thanks in large to the new diesel, but the Falcon had its worst year ever as sales continued their downward trend. Another bright spot was the launch of the new Focus, which routinely saw sales over 1,000 following its debut.

Chinese sales were up slightly in 2011 thanks in most part to the launch of the new Mondeo. Sales should hopefully pick up start in March following the start of the new Focus in the nation.

The Long Goodbye

The most known vehicle to go to the graveyard this year by observing its last sales was the Mercury Grand Marquis. This was a fitting end to the brand for this vehicle was its best selling model throughout its history.

The only other vehicle to record its last sales in 2011 was the JMC Baowei. Luckily this model was faithfully replaced by the Yusheng which has lifted JMC's market share in the mid-size SUV market in China.

Goodbyes for 2012

As with the Grand Marquis, Ford will lose the last two Panther platform vehicles as sales end for the Crown Victoria and Town Car. Ford hopes that the Taurus and MkT will replace these vehicles.

The European Fusion will go the way of the dodo after 10 years of service as Ford’s sub-compact MPV for Europe. In its place, the new Romanian built B-Max will take over.

The Brazilian made Ford Super Duty has been left unchanged since the facelift of the 2005 model year. Ford however believes that the new Ford Ranger will be enough for Brazil and Argentina and will kill off the F-Series ending decades of production in the market.

Largely based on an over a decade Fiesta design, the Ford Bantam will also end production. South Africa will now build only the Ranger. This will leave the Courier as the only sub-compact truck, though this is also scheduled to end production next year.

Merging in 2012

With the Escape (both the NA based and Taiwan based) and Kuga going shifting the same model throughout the year, they will be counted together from here on out.

Due to the Ranger’s Argentine production moving to the all-new model developed by Ford of Australia, all Ranger sales outside of the US and Canada will be counted together.

The Brazilian and Venezuelan built Fiesta will be separated out from the world Fiesta starting in Brazil thanks to the sales association splitting the data. The bad news is that Ford of India is not separating out both the local Fiesta/S. African Ikon from the new Fiesta so they will now be calculated together.

Markets included for the year were Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Columbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Netherlands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

CHICAGO, Feb. 8, 2012 – The official launch of SVT came during the 1992 Chicago Auto Show with the unveiling of the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning. Now Ford returns to Chicago to celebrate its past and look to the future with the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible.

In honor of SVT’s anniversary, a commemorative lighted sill plate will be used in the 2013 Shelby GT500 to celebrate the many years of performance vehicles. The 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra offered a 235-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine, which demonstrates just how far the products have come in 20 years. The 2013 Shelby GT500 with its 650-horsepower V8 marks the latest offering from one of the oldest and most successful automotive performance groups in the world.

“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis.”

The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible with the optional Performance Package is faster around a track than the outgoing model. The new convertible shaved nearly 3.5 seconds off its lap time at Sebring International Raceway compared to the 2011 and 2012 models.

Keys to the improved lap times are the power boost from the new 5.8-liter supercharged V8 producing 650 horsepower, as well as the SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers available on the Performance Package and the all-new chassis tuning.

Accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button, normal mode gives customers a more comfortable ride over road irregularities. Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved response time on the track and less body roll while cornering with reduced pitch under braking. The upgraded dampers allowed SVT engineers to tune the convertible more aggressively for the track, while still being able to maintain desirable on-road manners.

A new Brembo brake system also is a key enabler in boosting the performance of the convertible. The new brakes offer drivers enhanced stopping power to help keep their car under control, while new six-piston calipers in front along with larger front and rear rotors further improve braking performance. More aggressive brake pads also help the car achieve high deceleration and further robustness for more driver confidence.

Similar to the coupe, the convertible will be offered with a Performance Package that also can be upgraded to a Track Package, complete with an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler for further durability.

20 years of high-performance innovation
Each of the more than 210,000 SVT vehicles produced since 1993 has been designed and developed with the four SVT attributes in mind: Performance, Substance, Exclusivity and Value. These hallmarks still guide the brand’s vehicle development today.

“In the past 20 years, SVT has engineered world-class mid-engine supercars, front-wheel-drive performance cars, rear-wheel-drive muscle cars and high-performance on-road and off-road pickup trucks,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “There is no other performance house in the world that can match that diverse résumé.”

Since 1993 more than seven different SVT vehicles have been produced, including several versions of the Cobra and Shelby GT500, the F-150 Lightning performance pickup and F-150 SVT Raptor, the SVT Contour sports sedan, plus both three- and five-door versions of the SVT Focus. Special SVT Mustang Cobra R models were made in 1993, 1995 and 2000.

SVT has joined with Team RS in Europe to form the Performance Vehicles Group to devise a strategy for all future global performance Ford cars. The resulting Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car, giving drivers around the world the opportunity to share the exhilarating performance, excellent handling, addictive sound and sporty design Ford’s ST badge represents. The Ford Fiesta ST Concept also signals the next step in Ford’s global performance vehicle strategy and hints at how a future Fiesta ST model might look when it joins the Focus ST in the global small car portfolio.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500
The ultimate Ford Mustang – Shelby GT500 – raises the bar high on performance by delivering 650 horsepower and a track-tested top speed of more than 200 mph. The 5.8-liter supercharged V8 aluminum-block engine produces 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in the world.

Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimized for producing the additional horsepower, including a new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

And nearly every gear on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been revised to manage the torque and use more of the power in a way that makes it more driver-friendly.

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.
