Ford's Global Sales for the Third Quarter of 2012

    Ford Buys Its Sixth Brand
    December 4, 2012
    By: Austin Rutherford

Over the past five years, Ford has been grabbing headlines for divesting its ownership in such brands as Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover, but almost under the radar has been the investing of regional brands. Among these include the purchase of Troller in 2007 and the increase in stake to 30-% of Jiangling Motor in China. Jiangling not only includes the self named brand of JMC, but also the brand Landwind. Now through JMC, which Ford is the largest shareholder, the company that Henry started has acquired Chinese heavy truck maker Taiyuan from Chang'an, a Ford JV partner and part owner of JMC itself.

The acquisition of Taiyun is a part of a greater effort by Ford to diversify its product lineup in China and has announced investment into the Taiyun product lineup, which now includes two to three heavy trucks of various tonnage ranges.

    One of Taiyun's heavy trucks

Also huge news, Ford announced the production of its 350 millionth vehicle. The vehicle was a Ford Focus produced at its new Rayong, Thailand plant. The Focus could end up being the best selling car in the world for 2012.

At the end of the quarter, Ford sales in the US had risen 5.4 percent over the course of the year. This was driven by the Focus, Explorer, and F-Series. Ford Canada's sales continued as the best selling company in the country thanks mostly to the rising sales of F-Series. Product launch wise, the Ford C-Max hybrid launched and has seen considerable results since then.

Ford Europe sales continue their downward tend as the Euro crisis continues to weaken the market. Sales are down 7.6 percent year to date resulting in a loss of 0.5 points of market share. The loss is still likely due to Ford's refusal to match deep discounts like that of other automakers. The Ford B-Max continued its launch in the third quarter as it started retail sales in a few countries in September.

In Ford South America, the brand launched the all-new EcoSport. The sub-compact CUV will see further launches in the next few months as Chinese, Indian, and Thai production start. Also launching throughout Latin America, was the new Ranger, which is inching closer to overtaking the Toyota Hilux in Argentina.

Helped by the Sino-Japanese political tensions over a few Islands between the two nations, Ford sales leaped in China as many Chinese put off buying from Japanese companies. This propelled the Focus to become the best selling retail car in China.

Sales of Markets included in the third quarter include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Big thank you to Best Selling Cars for adding markets. Sales are only for the third quarter and not year-to-date.
