hmm... that black mostly fixes (or at least disguises) my previous complaints
but
now the grille & HL's(top clusters esp) look a bit 'off'

It’s not a journey. Every journey ends, but we go on. The world turns and we turn with it. Plans disappear. Dreams take over. Yet wherever I go, there you are. My luck, my fate, my fortune. MERCURY. It's inevitable.

That is a sad vehicle to attach the great Cherokee name to. The side screams Hyundai, the front is just ridiculous, bad bad bad Jeep!
I will say though that looking at Fiat's Euro vehicles I wasn't excited to see what they had in store for Jeep with them, and the image above is no where near as bad as the image I had in my head. The Fiat brand is not known for building stylish vehicles, they leave that to their upmarket brands, to bad so many of our new 'Muricanized versions will be based off of Fiats rather than Alfas.

"After Jalopnik posting photos of the Jeep Liberty replacement, an anonymous but trusted source wrote to tell Allpar that, as Chrysler’s twitter feed said, the cars we will see in April at the New York Auto Show will not look exactly like the ones leaked today. While we do not expect them to go “whole hog” on the appearance, as reader dodgeman1001 did in the comfort of a photo editor, we were told by the source that the photos seen this morning were taken some time ago. They were “very early” iterations, which were modified following reactions by observers within Chrysler and long-lead journalists."

Not IMO. My issue is that Jeep by definition is a cultural brand, and in the same way that Harley has a difficult time modernizing its brand, Jeep will struggle if it continues to abandon what has made Jeep so popular to begin with. Both brands are appealing, and can fetch premium dollars for products because they tug on our nostalgia strings, not our sci-fi fascinations.
That vehicle is as much a travesty in my eyes as the mere thought of the Probe having a Mustang badge, its just not the way the world was meant to be!
Edit: Another great example of a brand that is very closely tied to its past is Porsche. The 911 is still very much descended from the orignal Porsche cars, and if they tried to deviate from that path they would fail miserably, much like that new Jeep will.

Agree with you there SP1966.
This should be in the Fiat showroom. In fact, I'll bet Fiat gets a version soon, and it will be obvious that the Jeep badges and grill were tacked on to Fiats version.
Please don't let Fiat touch the large cars or the minivans.
The early bird gets the worm..but the second mouse gets the cheese.
Wow this is ugly as sin! I can't say anything nice about it.

1999 Mercury Sable LS Premium Toreador Red Clear Coat Metalic 3.0L Duratec V6 4 Speed Automatic
The front is too "Asian" looking for Jeep. Almost like a modern Isuzu with trademark Jeep grille. What were they thinking?????
Good Lord, help us!
I'm liking the basic idea of the front more & more
Of course I always want a few tweaks
but
this just getting rid of the crease running thru the grille & slight mods of the fogs & fascia
still REALLY don't like curve of the beltline
& haven't bothered thinking about the rear yet

While I ouldn't call it great looking, I think it isn't terriable either. I'll have to see it in person to make the final call, but this could be a new design trend if it does ok. Interior looks nice, I'm anxious to see the MPG's with the 9 speed.
