Say What? Ford Trademarks the "Inflatable Light Urban Vehicle"

    What is it?

In the waning days of March, the Ford Motor Company filed a trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office for something called the "Inflatable Light Urban Vehicle (iLUV)." No, this is not a late April Fools' Day joke, but is a serious trademark filing.

Now, before the jokes start on trademark 85882491, we do not believe that it is a vehicle that you inflate with air. That is simply impossible. However, what we think it could be is a single or duel seat, two or three wheel small electric vehicle meant for China and Europe. Many automakers are said to be considering folding vehicles as easy ways to get around cramped cities. Many engineering universities in both Europe and the US have developed possible programs as well. They would save parking space and could be used in vehicle sharing programs.

This would possibly be the first time Ford showed any interest vehicle in this area. Many automakers have already started on these small urban vehicles from GM with concepts shown in China and Renault has started production on the Twizy. However, none have done a model that folds. Many US cities have looked into the vehicles, with even the city of Detriot starting a pilot program with GM.

With many automakers entering or considering entering into the fray, Ford would be smart to enter into the signal or duel seat small urban vehicle market even if this trademark turns out not be this. If not a foldable urban vehicle, what do you think it could be?

Looks like Bloomberg (and also Automotive News) have picked up the article:
