Sneak peak at Ford’s next all-new Fusion?

It’s no secret that the next Ford Fusion will be built on the same global platform as the next fully re-designed European Mondeo, and now Ford has taken the wraps off of its refreshed Mondeo, possibly giving us our best indication yet of where the next Fusion will derive its styling from.
Leftlane had previously offered our take on what a four-door coupe Mondeo would look like, which has turned out to be fairly accurate in several regards to the actual model. In addition to the Mondeo four-door coupe – intended to compete with the Volkswagen CC – Ford also revealed an updated sedan and wagon.

In the U.S. the car that is closest in size and function to Europe’s Mondeo is the Fusion, which is currently only offered in sedan form. With the complete re-design expected to arrive in 2012, and the kinetic design language receiving positive praises in the new Fiesta and upcoming Focus, it would only make sense for Ford to continue this design language into the next global Fusion-Mondeo.
If that is the case, will the U.S. be receiving a four-door coupe Fusion? A five-door wagon? Only time will tell, but the business case may not be too far fetched to make, particularly with other automaker expanding their midsize sedan nameplates to include variations as as the Accord two-door coupe or Accord Crosstour.

Ford has planned the complete and official reveal for the 2010 Moscow Show on August 25, with sales expected to begin in September 2010. For now, we have information outlining several changes to the lineup ranging from cosmetic to powertrains details.
Ford’s new 240 PS (236 horsepower) EcoBoost debuts on Mondeo

Marking its European debut, the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine will debut in the Mondeo, with the slightly downrated version later coming in the new S-MAX and Galaxy later in 2010. Ford says that the high-output 236 horsepower EcoBoost engine matches the same low co2 ratings of the 200 horsepower EcoBoost engine with just 179 g/km.

New 2.2-liter Duratorq TDCi joins the mix
In addition to the 2.0-liter EcoBoosted gas engine, Ford has also announced a 2.2-liter oil-burner, which bumps power by 12 percent compared to the engine it replaces, to a total of 197 horsepower. Ford will continue to offer a 2.0-liter TDCi, available in three different power ratings and a six-speed manual transmission in all body styles.

New technology increases fuel economy
Ford says that the addition of Ford ECOnetic technologies, such as Smart Regenerative Charging, Ford Eco Mode, and a Ford first, an Active Grille Shutter system for optimal aerodynamics.

When equipped with either EcoBoost engine, 138 horsepower or 161 horsepower 2.0-liter TDCi, the Mondeo will be available with both a six-speed manual and a six-speed PowerShift transmission – which in the Mondeo is a double wet-clutch transmission.
