Big Sedans take over New York

I just got back from the New York auto show and this year's theme seems to be big sedans! Ford showed off the new Taurus last year leading the way for GM to show off the new Impala, Toyota to introduce the new Avalon, Nissan unveiled the 2013 mid-sized Altima...


What do you think of them?

The Acura RLX was actually surprisingly nice in person. I was a fan of Acura when they first came out and I thought they could do no wrong for years (aside from the SLX). Then they decided that the "family" needed a similar...and awful...look. That "milk mustache" that they tacked on to every car and truck was terrible, and yet they kept with it for far too long. The RLX is cleaner and much better.

I like the wave of nostalgia that's going through Chrysler. I can do without retro-mods like the Challenger, but bringing back the Charger, 300, and Dart names is great. "Torqueflite" is so much better than "62TE"...its about time that manufacturers brought back the interest in transmissions.

The retro aspect of the MKZ is so subtle that you almost need to be a student of automotive history to see it, which is great. Much better than the last Thunderbird where it was so overt it almost looked like a kitcar. I want to see the lineage in a car, but I also want designers to come up with something new...and the MKZ does that for me.

I really like that shot of the MKZ. It is far and away my favorite of the show.

I am liking the Impala more and more, and now wish the Taurus update was more extensive.

Acura RL is nice looking much better than the old model, but just doesn't stand out enough.

On the other hand, the Altima and Avalon seem to stand out for all the wrong reasons.

The MKZ really has been getting great press which is awesome. The Lincoln booth when I went was crowded and there were a lot of people saying they were impressed.

With the Impala, I agree with you. It seems very bland in terms of styling. The front design reminds me of the older Malibus ~2005. Not really sure where they are going with that. The Interior however looks great!

The Acura is looking better on the outside and the concept had a high quality interior but it still had the same shape as the Accords interior, I think it needs a more radicle change on the inside in terms of styling.

Good to know that the public liked the Lincoln. I was there during the press preview, so you don't really get an idea of how "real people" think about these cars. Media people are typically jaded about these things.
