Interesting...This would leave it open for the Taurus/Explorer to get a proper large RWD based platform once the stretched Mondeo runs the cycle.

    OR...
like this thread is all about,
they design a *modular* platform (crossreference) that will allow transverse-F-AWD *and* longitudinal-RWD

Isn't that what Nissan did with their Maxima/Altima/Z/G-Infiniti platform? I think that worked out quite well for them!

    ^ I'm not sure, SP1966,
but thought Nissan had Rwd & Fwd platforms that were quite similar but didn't really share (much) anything...
...tho remember reading that Chrysler had a platform capable of Both (LH?) but never built both on it

^Actually the LX platform (current 300 and Charger) is a heavily modified LH platform, so technically they did build both.

Not even close, the current 300 and Charger are based upon an old Mercedes platform.

That's what common belief is, but it's completely false. They used a bunch of Mercedes suspension stuff and the transmission, but even that is gone for the refreshed models.

yeah but not at the same time going down one assembly line
    right?
which is what I'm hoping for

Ford finally seems to be adopting my definition of a "flex plant"

belated Welcome & thanks for voting/posting, Vlester

    &
    new thought/crossreference
    Could a CD4+r.w.d. platform produce a light/compact pickup 'truck'?
Not exactly thinking of a Ranchero/Falcon-Ute (the Ute iirc has used a half-frame design for the cargo part)
rather building on the idea of an all-unibody trucklet.
& to fulfill my crazy idea quotient, maybe having a 2-mode rear passenger compartment that could morph into an extended 8ft bed.
Since this wouldn't be related to the F-150, & could theoretically be either-both RWD *&* (F)AWD, instead calling it an F-100, I'll go with "F-99" ... not sure if sharing some frontend styling-shape with the nextgen Explorer/Territory would be beneficial or not.
    &
just for grins / NOT related:
