Lincoln To Focus On Targeting Highest-Volume Luxury Segments

    • Lincoln may be Fordís in-house luxury brand, but donít expect to see a flagship concept like Cadillacís stunning Ciel from it in the near future. Instead, Lincolnís product plan calls for a focus on building competitive products for the highest volume luxury segments.
    • While a flagship vehicle (or a stunning concept) may draw attention to the brand, producing such a high-cost, low-demand product simply doesnít make financial sense for Lincoln. Instead, Lincoln is choosing to focus on building segment-leading vehicles to claw its way up the sales charts. As Automotive News (subscription required) reports, Lincoln trails luxury marques like Lexus and Infiniti by a large margin, and barely sells more vehicles than Toyotaís entry-level Scion brand. The fact that Lincolnís sales are down by 11-percent year to date (reducing its market share to just 0.6 percent) makes its climb back to prosperity that much more difficult.

So no big RWD sedan from Lincoln..probably no any rwd sedan from lincoln (or anything on rwd platform)

Good article 'asrapid' thanks for the post. I think Ford's plan for Lincoln is solid with competitive products in the pipeline. Exciting design with best in class quality, mpg and comfort will be key for a Buick/Cadillac level of success.

Well that was the plan Ford made, but doesn't mean they won't make a vehicle off mustang parts after they redesign the line up.
All they won't is to focus first on what is crucial and that's volume. After that hopefully Lincoln will make enough profit to expand.

& I wouldn't go that far, asrapid (&btw THANKS for posting this!)
    actually
    imho
    if Lincoln has a Mustang co-platformed sportsedan & coupe(/cabrio)
PLUS large RWD sedan that's upto $99k fully loaded/Bespoke...

...THEY'RE STILL AIMING LOW (tho not TOO low...
    ...
    just TOO SLOW
    )
probably only equivalent to Hyundai/Genesis by the time Lincoln gets there!!!

    imho
    depending on how one defines Crucial - Volume - Flagship - Concept - high-cost - low-demand - etc - etc - etc;
I can completely agree or totally DISagree
    &
    afaik
FLincMoCo hasn't made THEIR understanding of those terms clear yet.

    btw
as I've posted before, I DO think $99k is an ideal upper price limit

for ANY Brand that doesn't want to be "rape-the-planet" silly

...as relevant as BuggyWhip questions IMHO

I still don't know how they are going to do that without an "image" car. That's why the 3 and the C-Class do so well. Those new models like the new MKZ doesn't really beef the image up of the brand all that much. Lincoln should be an exclusive brand like Rolls and Bentley but now it seems like Ford wants to turn Lincoln into Mercury.

Re: Lincoln To Focus On Targeting Highest-Volume Luxury Segments

Ford's plans for Lincoln sound little bit familiar..didn't they have similar plans for Mercury? I see Cadillac compete against german's trio in near future (even now there are some models that can compete against trio). Buick..well i don't know what are the competition for that company in USA but here, some cars like opel insignia (american version is buick regal i guess) competes against Ford mondeo (american Ford fusion).
So will Lincoln go against Mercedes, BMW audi or lower luxurie like buick...acura and volvo i guess are here too?
As i see it Lincoln have one attractive model..new MKZ. They need much more than that

Yes, before Mercury's departure, they were supposed to get an entry-level compact called the Tracer and now that Mercury is gone Lincoln is supposed to get one.

Notice in the Auto News article Lincoln is supposed to bring out an "entry-level" crossover. I have a feeling that's what Ford wants Lincoln to be is an entry-level brand to compete with Buick and Acura.

    Lincoln CONFIRMS 3-Series FIGHTERS COMING!!!

    ^ & ^^
tho the XZST currently could easily be(are) Mercurys imho (as I've said)

unless you guys don't agree with my $99k "highest reach" for Lincoln

and would like give your definitions & maybe a Lincoln lineup proposal

I don't see any FUTURE assumptions equaling 'Mercurization'

    ...yet

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    also
tho my most recent 'complete' sales numbers file is 2007,
the best selling "lux" car was the 3-series
    so
    if that's still fairly accurate,
    then
    Mustang-co-platformed Lincolns (sportsedan & coupe/cabrio)
    HAVE JUST BEEN CONFIRMED!!

Re: Lincoln To Focus On Targeting Highest-Volume Luxury Segments

The fail of Lincoln was all because of poor design and craftsmanship. Today Lincoln do not have vehicles that have a very upscale design to wow foreign car owners. The only vehicles that is nice as of now is the MKX and the ok MKS. The up coming MKZ I think is nice. But to really grab buyers attention. It's all about the design, performance and reliability. Lincoln should know that. As I state what I am about to say it is common sense. A small and very unreliable company like Hyundai's of the past, came past the for Brand including its luxury brand. That should have gave the design director and engineers a wake up call to work hard that the drawing table. If this company fail, I would say its all because of lagging and not putting in quality time and to hire designers who are very passionate about design. It is easy Lincoln, it really is. I am getting my bachelors in Interior Design and it requires different phases and a concept goal. Before things get the final ok before production, I know that one can see if the design is a good deal or a bad deal to help attract people.

Re: Lincoln To Focus On Targeting Highest-Volume Luxury Segments

I would like to know how Lincoln salesmen make a living. Lincoln has nothing exciting out there. They are few and far in between. They have to be living off the used car sales. Ford should just reintoduce a Merc Milan to bring traffic into the showroom. And eat crow.
