    Ford's EcoBoost three-cylinder could grow to 1.5L, 200hp

Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost three-cylinder was crowned the International Engine of the Year back in June, but donít expect the Blue Oval to be afraid of making changes to the diminutive mill. Larger, more powerful versions of the three-banger could come in the future, according to Ford gasoline engine development chief Andy Fraser.

At its current size, the engine is an attractive proposition for buyers in markets where vehicles are taxed on displacement. However, regulations and consumer demands differ from country to country, and Fraser says Ford is prepared to create distinct versions of the three-cylinder to suit a variety of regions.

ďWe have a maximum capacity per cylinder of 500cc, so a 1.5-litre engine is certainly possible,Ē Fraser told AutoExpress. ďIn growing markets there are incentives for certain sizes of engines, so in Brazil they want a 1.0-litre engine, in India itís 1.2 and in China itís 1.5 Ė the EcoBoost engine could be all of those.Ē

    huh!
we've heard about a new 1.5 liter engine but it was kinda assumed to be a 4cyl

then again the 1.0EB has been upto 180hp already (significantly more than gen2 EB's forecasted 140hp (production))

    anyway, this is good news!

I could see in the future, maybe in 6 years, a Fusion with only 3 cyl engines, and a 4 cyl option in the top trim? 4 cyl only for large cars, like the Taurus and Mustang? V6 (ecoboost or not) will be the top choice for the most powerful Mustangs and F-150 trucks? V8 definitly dead??

V8 will stay in the Mustang and F-Series for sure. Maybe a Lincoln flagship if they ever get to it? V8 is going to be very exclusive

I think the engine is great. But i would like to see an SVT Fusion with a v6, or the larger turbo 4 in the upcoming '13 mustang. They can't let such a beautiful car keep getting whooped!

    exactly Andrew I totally agree

V8's will be around for the *foreseeable* future - trucks bought/owned by businesses and depreciateable ensure that V8's in a few powerful cars will continue to be offered...just becoming more & more expensive/exclusive

I can see this in everything except the Mustang and trucks, these will need a V8 option or there Dead on arrival.

P.S. I have to agree with Andrew also that we will need a V8 Lincoln, Maybe something based on the Mustang but not a copy of the Mustang, need to expend the wheel base and a bigger trunk with all the HP that you can muster.

F-Series, Mustang, Excursion, and a Lincoln flagship would always need a V8 option. It would be expected in the US market.

Personally, I'm more interested in the "other" powertrains, and where they can take average Joes like me. There is already too much of a premium price on the V8 motors; they are simply out of my range, and I couldn't afford the fuel for them anymore.

So I'm intrigued to see/learn what other powertrain options might provide for a fun, yet fuel-efficient, future experience.
