Europe's Woes Put Ford Coupe Proposal on Hold

imho: PIX OR IT DIDN"T HAPPEN...

Europe's Woes Put Ford Coupe Proposal on Hold - Insideline

    Published Nov 16, 2012

    Just the Facts:
    • Ford of Europe has developed a new coupe proposal, envisioning a car positioned beneath the Ford Mustang, but the project has been put on hold because of ongoing concerns about Europe and the global economy.
    • The need for a more glamorous model is increasingly being felt by Ford's European arm.
    • Insiders tell Edmunds that Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally rejected the coupe proposal, concluding that the market for specialty models is currently too uncertain for it to be viable.

...Edmunds says: The confidence isn't yet there for another specialty coupe from Ford, especially with the constant drumbeat of negative economic news out of Europe.

Continue development for the US market then bring to Europe when things get better..?..

I'm sure we wouldn't mind a specialty coupe.

What platform was this vehicle based on? If the vehicle was going to be RWD(or not) could Lincoln benefit as an Audi TT type vehicle?

Most likely Fiesta based in guessing or else it would have interfered with the new Mustang too much.

Re: Europe's Woes Put Ford Coupe Proposal on Hold

    ^interesting
also remember the talk about all cars from CD4 on down being on a new modular platform (Link)

also interesting, in my latest ideal lineup, I've been thinking of a sporty 'coupe' between the Fiesta and Focus in size
    codename C3, wlb 102", ovl 172, width 72½, ht 54
...and for other than an all-hybrid Premium Brand (wink)
drivetrains starting around 180hp and stepping upto as high as no-AWD can handle
(virtual-Awd is my main reason for wanting electrification on the top performance model, not just for a high-mpg/lo-power model)

    edit
also thinking about a "5-door-coupe" sport model between the sizes of a Focus & Fusion
    codename C5, wlb 110", ovl 182, width 75, ht 54
note: both of these would be about 4" lower than sedans

^ Andrew, all I remember are renderings from AutoExpress
(prolley why I don't put too much faith into this)

guess this could be a coffee-break exercise some designers did without any backing?
...kinda like how I believe the GR1 Concept started life

Re: Europe's Woes Put Ford Coupe Proposal on Hold

I would like to see more 2 doors available in the US, like the 2 door Focus and Fiesta. Always wondered how a 2 door Fusion would do specially now with the new style but would that hurt the Mustang?

    ^ just imho, Andrew
I'd much rather FIRST** see the fastback Fusion changed to the 5-door hatch
and the main model replaced with a notchback sedan body for the U.S.
(tho that *would* be sorta avant-garde ... maybe when the new tophat OR if the modular car platform arrives)

** have a strong hunch that a Fusion-BASED coupe is coming

Which makes me wonder if they will ever do another Lincoln coupe again.........

    well
imho a Mustang-co-platformed Lincoln is practically a sure thing BUT that's Not saying it'd have to be/offer a coupe

think other than ^that^, it'll depend on the eventual modular car platform
& if they plan a Ford Brand coupe
OR if the modular is soooo flexible it's not a big deal to do a Lincoln exclusive
