Ford eying 18 percent sales gain for Lincoln in 2013

    By Nat Shirley
    Thursday, Dec 20th, 2012 @ 4:42 pm

A new report has revealed Ford’s internal 2013 sales target for its flagging Lincoln division, which is currently in the midst of a $1 billion turnaround effort.

While Ford has yet to officially comment on its volume goals for Lincoln, the Blue Oval told its dealers at a recent meeting that an 18 percent sales increase would represent a "good year" for the luxury brand, a company source revealed to The Detroit News.

Such a performance would be a marked improvement compared to Lincoln’s sales this year, which are down 3 percent to 74,766 units through November. Still, some analysts believe that Ford needs to set the bar higher.

"An 18 percent increase from this point will probably be a modest increase," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry analysis at TrueCar.com. "For them to show any kind of momentum, they need to have a 25 percent-plus year."

Lincoln – recently rebranded as “Lincoln Motor Company” - hopes to begin its product and sales renaissance with the redesigned 2013 MKZ sedan, which rides on a Ford Fusion platform but features unique styling inside and out in addition to exclusive engine options. The automaker is also planning on increasing showroom traffic by introducing four more new models by 2015. The first, the Ford Escape-based MKC luxury crossover, is set to debut in concept form in January at the Detroit show.

    18 percent?

    Hmmm.

Okay, new "branding", new ad blitz, some new products...the MKZ leads the way (we'll see how that plays out, reviews are pretty mixed), MKC debuting in Detriot, rumors of a "large sedan" getting some work for a forthcoming debut...

...we'll all see. I don't think the percentage is going to be a problem if the recent investments in personnel and what-not raise the bar...but it's on them. Lincoln swims or drowns in the next few years.

That seems a conservative estimate...Consider how they brag on the MKZ as a game changer, selling a a little over 1K per month more is a no-brainer. They better be expecting 2.5K more per month.

The last generation MKZ was selling 2500-3k units per month and that model shared much more with the Fusion. This new model should be a success if they manage to sell 4-5k units per month.

tho not At All what FLincMoCo has said,
I thought it'd be interesting to do some "compound interest"...

    80k approx for 2012
    + 20% = 96k - 2013
    + 20% = 115,200 - 2014
    + 20% = 138,240 - 2015
    + 20% = 165,888 - 2016
    + 20% = 199,067 - 2017
    + 20% = 238,879 - 2018
    + 20% = 286,655 - 2019
    + 20% = 343,985 - 2020

    My optimistic spin:

They really should hit 100K next year with the MKZ selling an extra 20K

The new Mkscape should sell about 20K in 2014, and the MKZ should pick up about 10K more.

After that, I'd expect a smaller gain in 2015.

    2013 100K
    2014 124K
    2015 135K

That should make them worth keeping around, and investing more money to bring out some vehicles worthy of the Lincoln name.

On the other hand, if MKZ sells only 10K more in 2013, and the MKscape has issues getting to the dealers, or is a styling misfit in 2014, things won't be very promising.

It would be nice to see them increase to over 100k a year, I wonder if the new MKZ can help start that push, but they really are missing out with that Navigator that is old as sin and the MKS which is just not selling at all. They need those 2 to be restyled NOW

They're too busy working on the Mercury part of Lincoln right now...they will eventually get to the Lincolns.

    ^ Andrew & Logan,
Mr. Mulally said the 2 vehicles after the MKC are a "large" sedan and a "large" SuvCuv
IF I'm right and they'll be
    - the E386, MKS's long-hiatused bigbrother, a true TownCar replacement
    &
    - the new ultralight-F150-based Navigator
    then
the MKC is last Mercurial Lincoln
    :crossesfingers:

    edit/hmm...
tho I don't like the "apologist" sound ... I wonder if this could explain the MKC not being all that differentiated from the Eskugape

Right, we have heard that... BUT I still stand by my statement that they need to be updated NOW not tomorrow or next year. ESPECIALLY the Navigator
