Some companies come and go, while others not only make their mark on the world, but make a mark on the people. Ford Motor Company is one of those companies. 110 years ago today, Henry Ford incorporated the Ford Motor Company.

The birth of Ford Motor is not only the story of the beginning of one of the most recognizable brands on Earth, but also the beginning of the middle class. In 1908, Ford debuted the Model T and to meet the demand, the assembly line, the affordable automobile, and the expansive middle class were born.

Through the years since, Ford has dealt with a Kaiser, Hitler, and an Emperor as part of the Arsenal of Democracy as well as economic hardships. Many times along the journey, it was doubted by many that the company would make it, but Ford always slugged through and rose from the downfall.

The Sino Expansion Heads into Sixth Gear

Sometimes a quarter is not seen as significant to the company. That can not be said of the first quarter of 2013 for Ford. Compared to the same time frame in 2012, sales rose 9.3-% overall thanks to new products and truck sales. With over a million sold last year, the Focus looks like it will run over that figure for 2013.

The biggest growth came out of China where sales rose 54-%. This was mostly the result of the new Ford Focus, which launched later in 2012. Also helping sales, Ford continued their aggressive expansion in the world’s largest market with the launches of the Kuga, EcoSport, and JMC Tiger mid-size pickup. This was just the beginning of the Ford’s Chinese expansion this year as the Explorer, Focus ST, Mondeo, and facelifted Fiesta also launched shortly after the quarter ended.

In North America, sales continued their uptick in both the United States and Canada. The Fusion, Escape, Explorer, and F-Series all saw double-digit growth in the US with the Fusion and Escape setting all time records. The F-Series started the year in Canada with all time record sales as well.

F-Series Sales Continue to Build

Ford announced an increase of 14 percent for the US market in May. This marks the best May since 2006. Retail sales were up an even stronger 17 percent.

Both the Fusion (Up 10-%), Escape (Up 26-%), and Lincoln MkZ (Up 42-%) scored their best May's ever.

Ford F-Series sales climbed 31-% in May to over 70,000 units. That is the first time since March 2007 where sales have been over this mark. If YTD F-Series sales were lined up, it would stretch 1,123 miles (1,807 km) long.

YTD sales for Ford electrified vehicles have now outsold full year 2012 sales in only five months. C-Max sales in May sold over 3,700 units in May.

The Ford Edge, Explorer, and Focus also saw sizable gains over the previous year.

Lincoln brand sales increased by 0.4 percent with many of its older models' sales down harshly.

Ford also announced third quarter production will rise 10 percent.
