Bob Lutz: Continental is More "Luxurious" Than the CT6

Cadillac was fine in the Thirties, Forties, and Fifties, and then it went downhill, along with Lincoln. That's going to be tough to get back. It can only come from focused and consistent messaging on the excellence of the car, and it's got to be accompanied by dynamite styling.

For Cadillac and Lincoln, the priority should be to build the best-looking full-size sedan in the world. If everything you do is the best looking with the best trim, the best leather, and the biggest wheels, the performance just has to be adequate. The car doesn't have to win every high-performance comparison test. It just has to be so compelling that it forces people to consider the brand. That's where the new Lincoln Continental concept succeeds. It will have some people who have never considered a Lincoln saying, "Boy, this thing looks great." Then they'll drive it, and sure enough, it will likely drive great.

Re: Bob Lutz: Continental is More "Luxurious" Than the CT6

^ imho you picked out the best parts to quote, DEQ
but
with a bit of re-arranging...

comment: Are we to believe that Bob Lutz the ultimate car guy wrote this?

"
...I think we have to separate true luxury from what we broadly refer to as "luxury brands"...

...The things that separate near luxury from true luxury are purely psychological. There's no technological or capability difference. It's what's in people's minds...

...Luxury brands are getting harder and harder to define. I fully admit my own views on them are in a state of flux. Ask me on different days and I'll give you a different answer...

...When people are paying $800 a month for a Tahoe LTZ and $350 a month for a Mercedes or BMW 3-series, which one is luxury?..."

- - - - - -

- I emphasized "true Lux" due to my first hearing it from J Mays
- re: Tahoe-vs-cheaperMB/BMW, imhO neither are "true Lux"
- his CT6 parts sound like sour grapes

Re: Bob Lutz: Continental is More "Luxurious" Than the CT6

Did Bob Lutz really write that??????

Anyway, the Continental should murder it and shine bright in the features department. E-Latch door handles, Revel Audio, 30-way adjustable seats, and SPD SmartGlass. It's a **** good start. It's proof that Lincoln is trying to bring new and interesting things to the market, instead of warming up leftovers (like you know who).

Very informative from one of the Car Kings. I hope Lincoln(Ford) is listening, I think they are with the design of the Continental.

Great read, always been a fan of Maximum Bob simply because he's a car guy and pulls no punches.

Re: Bob Lutz: Continental is More "Luxurious" Than the CT6

In many ways I could have written that article! He amplifies why I'm continually disappointed by the MKC, they designed the best looking small premium CUV bar none, then built what they thought was good enough. The MKX appears to be making the transition largely in tact, but then the concept while very nice was never as exceptional as the MKC concept. The Continental concept is once again phenomenal! We'll have to wait a year to see how much of it makes the transition to production.

Thus far Lincoln has dealt with the constraints put upon them by Ford, I sure hope D6 reverses this trend and Lincoln can be truly set free to realize their dreams!!

Re: Bob Lutz: Continental is More "Luxurious" Than the CT6

I mean it's a pretty basic article about defining luxury and what it means, we all know the basics of it and the blurred lines based on pricing alone. He does point out the importance of exclusivity which is very much a factor in why I choose Lincoln, if it was cheap and popular like a Lexus RX I'm not sure I'd want one. This is the first time however that I've heard him de-emphasis the importance of performance in a luxury car. Performance for me must not come at the expense of comfort and serenity, but confident performance is still important.

I would not gush over the Continental just yet, a concept is still a significant flight of fancy and the production car will be significantly more pedestrian. I'm sure it'll be a good car, but we are not talking Bentley money here which the Continental Concept replicates.

Personally I don't care at all about the Continental from a consumer perspective, it's not my personal style and I consider large sedans to be outmoded, but it's a flagship for Lincoln and should represent their best effort to date. I'll wait for the Aviator which I'm sure will be much nicer

Borg, I think your biased towards the Aviator because your more the SUV/CUV type versus me, where I like cars better. I like the utility of CUV's like the MKX but unless you have the Cayenne, they don't hit the corners like most cars because of the higher center of gravity.
