I'd hate to see the Buick name go it's the oldest American brand being founded in 1899. But saying that they need to do something with the brand. If they want it to be upscale they need to move Cadillac out of the way or find a way for both of them to exist side by side without stepping on each others toes. If not upscale then they need to do the same but with Chevy.

I'd say mostly Chevy platforms, and maybe an Alpha product at the top end.

This deal wouldn't affect Buick at all in the US, at least from a production standpoint. Only the Cascada is made in Europe for the US. Everything else (Enclave, Regal, LaCrosse) is produced here, China (Envision) or in South Korea (Encore). Engineering would still be shared with Holden in Australia.

Re: PSA to buy GM's Opel

'nother article, an elsewhere PREFACE,
& also swiping some replies for summation/rebuttal...

Preface: a number of posts caution that we cannot KNOW if Opel IS profitable since GM plays-loose with accounting Costs/Revenue where they Like
rather than Where they're generated!

Barra's move to sell Opel signals deeper change at GM
AutomotiveNews- Reuters

Joseph White - February 14, 2017

DETROIT -- General Motors CEO Mary Barra’s decision (? ORLY?) to put the company’s European operations on the block marks a turning point...
...If Barra (")succeeds(") in concluding a deal with French automaker Peugeot SA ... she will have delivered in an unexpected way on her promise to have GM “disrupt ourselves” rather than wait to be jolted by outside forces...

...Shedding GM Europe isn’t the technology-driven disruption Barra usually refers to in presentations to investors. But it is a major course change for the company...

...GM's cultural shift...
...Selling Opel would mean GM is setting aside those traditional measures of success to be a smaller company focused on the United States truck market, China and some -- but not all -- the large, growth markets in Latin America and Asia. Under Barra’s leadership, GM has exited Russia and Indonesia after concluding it couldn’t earn acceptable returns on investment...

- - - - - - -

commentaries:
- GM can retain a stake in the "new PSA" so could still co-develop products
- could retain engineering, design, logistics(, & sales?) centers in Yurpland
- could always re-enter the market with new product in 5 years
- IS THIS MORE SHORT-TERM THINKING FROM GM?
- I am reading, "If you can't Compete, put your tail between your legs and run"...
- once merger-mania is initiated, there is no turning back. Niche players will be the first to succumbed to the new reality. = GM needs to fight niche-hood
Rebuttal:
practically everything I read (esp from Ford) suggests Mobility/AutonoMouse is REPLACING business as usual

Holden uses booth Chev and Opel based cars with only a badge change. Their range is:

Cars:
Holden Spark (Chevy Spark)
Holden Barina (Chevy Sonic)
Holden Astra sedan (new Chevy Cruze)
Holden Astra hatch (Opel Astra)
Holden Commodore (Opel Insignia)

SUV:
Holden Trax (Chevy Trax)
Holden Captiva (Chevy Captiva)
Holden Trailblazer (Chevy Trailblazer)

Trucks:
Holden Colorado (Chevy Colorado)

So Holden will suffer when GM sell Opel/Vauxhall. They are currently switching to Opel based models as the Chevy based models were not so well received their except the small versions. If the sale does go through then Holden will either die or change back to Chevy based cars and keep the Holden name

I'd say the latter is most likely.

Re: PSA to buy GM's Opel

@Nitro
do you know if/how Peugeot sells in Australia? & Does Holden sell anywhere ELSE?

wondering if the Peugeot Group would want to include Holden in the deal?
(OR... if GM might?)

Yes, Peugeot and Citroen are sold in Australia. I believe if PSA buys Opel, the next generation will be based on Peugeots. That leaves Holden without a few models so they only have one option to survive and that is to swich back to Chevy based vehicles or be closed down

What's more interesting is Opel developed most of GM's FWD platforms from the C-segment up.

GM could be trying to bring development back to the US

the REAL reason GM wants to dump Opel ...lousy 'landlord'...

Possible French Takeover of Opel Ruffles German Feathers
GMi

by Steph Willems - February 15, 2017

...Opel operates three factories on German soil, and regardless of who owns Opel in the future, the country wants those plants to stay put.

German Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries was particularly steamed, calling it “unacceptable” that GM discussed selling its European subsidiary without contacting the German government and local players.

“The company carries responsibility for the sites, the development center and the securing of employment,” she said today. “This is my clear expectation regarding General Motors.”

Opel’s works council and the powerful IG Metall labor union blasted GM over the talks. The two groups issued a joint statement, claiming that discussions with PSA held without their permission amounted to “an unprecedented violation of all German and European co-determination rights.”...
