The Ford brand improves for the fifth year in a row and at a rate faster than the industry, showing 81 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 86 in 2017. Lincoln improves to a third-place ranking among premium brands, with 83 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 92 in 2017.

Those news are good news. But.... One of the reasons why Ford and Lincoln are up in that ranking is because they have the oldest fleet in the industry. Generally, the models recently launched to the market have more problems at the beginning, until their production stabilizes.

Falcon, I don't believe that is true at all. These rankings have zero to do with how old a platform, but rather everything else. Plenty of new tech and features for customers to react to.

Congrats to Ford.

2019 Top Safety Pick (+): Chrysler Pacifica is the only American car to get an award.

Absent from the winner's circle are Fiat Chrysler's Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands; Ford and its Lincoln brand; General Motors' Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands; and Tesla. All failed to qualify for either award.

The Ford Fusion and the Ram 1500 crew cab, for instance, are held back by underperforming headlights. What's more, several Dodge and Ford models with older designs still lack a good rating for driver-side protection in a small overlap front crash.
