Tesla Completes First Coast-To-Coast Supercharger Route - TechCrunch
Posted 12 hours ago by Matt Burns

While likely not committed with the driving of a silver spike, Tesla has completed the first Supercharger line spanning from each coast. This achievement now makes it possible to drive a Tesla Model S from LA to NYC, recharging the vehicles exclusively through Superchargers. Best of all, at these stations, Tesla drivers can top off their tanks for free...

...The coast-to-coast route takes drivers from the Pacific, through Arizona, up to South Dakota and through Chicago with the ultimate destination of New York City. But, Tesla hasnít stopped there. The Supercharger network actually spans down both coasts from Seattle to San Diego and Connecticut to the tip of Florida...

Re: Tesla Coast-To-Coast Supercharger Route - TechCrunch

This is an impressive commitment to their vehicles. Tesla really has rethought the whole relationship between customer and manufacturer, and created a unique ownership experience. Once they introduce their SUV and a smaller, more affordable sedan, they're going to see massive growth. That said, at some point, the benefit of being a small, reactive company disappears, and they will certainly face growing pains at some point. But I really do like how they're running their business.

Question, can any car be charged at a supercharger, or just a Tesla? It would be great if any electric car could be charged there (for a fee of course).

Right now, only the Model S can charge at Superchargers. Future Tesla models will be able to charge as well, and Elon Musk has offered to license the network to other manufacturers, but for now they are using a proprietary connector that no other vehicles support.

I see this achievment as a revolution. This make me think in the first time a train could go from west coast to the east coast of USA... Tesla have a brigth future

On another forum, that shall remain nameless, I read comments about how their network isn't practical at all; that you can't pick your route to go across the country, blah blah blah. You have to start somewhere, and in a short time they have created a path from east to west. I think that this shows how dedicated Tesla is to making their car a viable alternative to gas-powered vehicles, and I have no doubt that they'll keep slugging away to create more coverage across the US.

Ugh, that's like each brand having their own size and shape of gas fuel-filler on their vehicles! Is Tesla the only one that has done this, or does each manfacturer have their own connectors for electric vehicles? So frustrating that the industry couldn't see that in the long-term having a common connector is beneficial to everyone.

Another great example of a brand investing in its future rather than simply bottom lining every decision!

Smart on their part, other manufacturers are going to have to make the hard choice between licensing so they can offer their customers a nationwide network of charging stations or hope that their customers will be patient while a new infrastructure is built out. Forward looking investment is a beautiful thing!!
