DeLOREAN: Back To The (near) FUTURE...

DeLorean goes back to the future, into production

HUMBLE, TEXAS — The DeLorean is going back to the future and into production...
...the last time a DeLorean was built was about 35 years ago. That will soon change at the DeLorean Motor Company in Humble, Texas...

...DeLorean Motors CEO, Stephen Wynne...brought the DeLorean Motor Company to Texas in 1987 and for the first time, the DeLorean will be made on American soil.

The company will build replica 1982 DeLoreans under a low volume manufacturing bill approved by the federal government.

Wynne estimates that they have enough supplies in stock to build about 300 cars. He hopes to go from building one a month to one a week...

...A refurbished DeLorean can be bought for $45,000 to $50,000, and Wynne said he hopes to sell the new ones for less than $100,000 although prices depend on the modern engine.

“There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car,” he said.

The company hopes to have the first new DeLorean roll off the production line early next year.

I vote for a pair of 1.0EB's!! = 2.0inline6 with 300-400hp + couple/few hundred in battery-less electrics

The DeLorean Is Coming Back Thanks To This New Law,
Will Have 300-400 HP [UPDATED]

[email protected]jalopnik.com

...UPDATE: I was finally able to talk to James Espey, the VP of the company, and while he couldn’t come out and tell me exactly what the new drivetrain would be, I did get a few good details:

• While GM is an engine option, they’re not the only ones. They’re looking at three possible suppliers, two domestic, one foreign. There’s one favorite though, and the engine that’s the frontrunner is a normally-aspirated V6 making between 300-400 HP. This seems to be the non-American company, and while the company wouldn’t comment, it may well be Japanese. It may be Toyota, but that’s just a guess.

Lotus already buys the Camry’s V6, right? They cram that into some tight areas. That 3.5-liter 2GR-FSE V6 used in the Lexus IS makes over 300 HP now; maybe that one?

• The center stack, HVAC, and some other ancillaries will be from the current-favorite supplier.

• Because it’s a rear-engine configuration, a transaxle setup will be used, though they would not tell me that supplier just yet.

• The new DeLorean will have bigger wheels, bigger brakes, and shocks from “a famous German supplier.” Bilstein?

This all sounds quite promising, and should really improve the character of the car, now that it has over twice as much power.

Re: DeLOREAN: Back To The (near) FUTURE...

I've never cared for the Delorean, they were to my eyes an unattractive Bricklin SV-1 knockoff. When I was in my teens our next door neighbor had an SV-1 that looked identical to the one below! The Bricklin itself was a subpar car in pretty much every way, but to a young boy just getting into cars it may as well have been a Countach!

Give me an easily modded front mounted V8 over that pathetic, underpowered, rear mounted V6 every day of the week, and about a hundred times on Sunday!

Re: DeLOREAN: Back To The (near) FUTURE...

If they do get to 400hp in a pseudo-mid-engine sports car should solve the main problem with the Delorean. I never loved or hated it, but there seems to be quite the following who would love to collect every single one. An updated suspension and modern electronics, and hey, I would not mind driving one of these gull winged classics.
