Ford Europe Says Jan Sales Rose 8%; Market Share Up

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Ford Motor Co.'s (F) European division said Thursday its vehicle retail sales in Januaryrose 8% to 140,000 vehicles, giving it a market share of 9% excluding Russia, up from 8.9% a year earlier.

Ford said growth was fueled by sales of the new Ford S-MAX.

"We expect our sales to receive an additional boost with the launch of the new Mondeo later in the year," said Stephen Odell, Ford of Europe vice president for marketing, sales and service.

Ford Europe, which is responsible for production and sales of Ford branded cars in Europe, said sales of its light commercial vehicles, including the popular Transit, were up 15.6% on the year.

The U.K. was again Ford Europe's largest market, with sales up 9.5% to 34,700 vehicles, giving it market share of 18.2%, the company said.

Ford Europe isn't responsible for the Europe-based Premium Automotive Group premium brands of Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin.
