Ford to Add 4 New SUV's as Global Demand Drive Continued SUV Growth

CHICAGO, – Together, millennials and baby boomers give Ford 160 million good reasons to expect the surge in SUV sales will continue into the next decade.

Growth in SUV sales is expected to continue – not only in the United States, but around the world – and why Ford is adding four new SUVs in the next four years – all four in SUV segments in which the company does not currently compete.

“As members of the 80-million-strong millennial age group enter their prime child-rearing years, a leading indicator of more SUV sales, nearly 80 million aging baby boomers continue to prefer their SUVs,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford Motor Company vice president of Marketing, Sales and Service. “It’s a demographic double whammy and it all points to one thing – more SUVs for the foreseeable future.”<

LaNeve cited recent Ford research that shows once millennials even begin thinking about starting a family, their interest in shopping for SUVs goes up significantly. And as many have delayed starting families, these yet-to-form family households represent additional SUV growth opportunities for the company.

Yet millennials alone aren’t expected to drive SUV growth – aging baby boomers tend to stay with or return to SUVs, in part because it’s easier to get in and out of a vehicle that sits higher off the ground than a passenger car. LaNeve also noted that many boomers feel younger and more active driving an SUV.

While low gas prices have contributed to the growth in SUVs in recent years, much improved fuel efficiency in the latest generation of utility vehicles leads Ford to believe a potential rise in gas prices wouldn’t push consumers back to passenger cars.

Pretty much what we have already heard, but this makes it official.

So, I am guessing a compact SUV and a offroader with the Bronco.

Any other ideas?

Compact for sure, Bronco for sure, 4-Runner/Everest segment for sure, and a Lincoln?

We assume Ford Mo. Co. will have 4 new SUV's, but I wish there were clear when they simply state Ford.

Different websites are saying different things.

Car & Driver is saying that they've confirmed the 4 models will be wearing names not in the Ford Global fleet, so Ecosport is out or Ford will be changing the name to something else here.

The Bronco and Aviator is a given, the third possible being a new re-named Ecosport especially with all the mules showing up, I can't see Ford going bigger than the Expedition again and their lineup is pretty much stacked. So does Lincoln have room for another SUV/CUV besides the Aviator, will they go smaller?

They're chasing Jeep-eating volume with this move, not the luxury market. One of these vehicles will be Lincoln, not two.

1: Compact
2: Everest-ish
3: Bronco
4: Aviator

Re: Ford to Add 4 New SUV's as Global Demand Drive Continued SUV Growth

My question is when they say SUV do they really mean SUV and not CUV in all four cases? SUVs are typically truck based and have body on frame design, I highly doubt Ford is about to bring four new SUVs to market. My bet is we get two of each, a Ranger based Bronco and Everest along with two D6 based CUVs or maybe an Ecosport.

^

Well,
Escape and Explorer are labeled SUV's, and so is Jeep GC.
And neither of those are straddled with the heavy weight of a BOF design.

Unless data shows u to point elsewhere, I am sticking to the same old speculation:

1) EcoSport
2) Everest
3) Bronco
4) Aviator
2b2 and Dequindre like this.

Re: Ford to Add 4 New SUV's as Global Demand Drive Continued SUV Growth

There is a Ford quote that they do not compete in the compact SUV segment, so the 4 SUVs must be based on North America or the US market.

So remembering CAFE is king, the 4 could be....

1. EcoSport

2. Edge L from China, that fits between the current Edge and the longer/wider/taller Explorer.

3. Bronco, but only if it's Everest/Ranger based and competes with Wrangler in every way, otherwise if it's F-150 based, it's already done with Raptor 4-Door.

4. Aviator - a given
