2018 FORD EXPEDITION FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: REDEFINING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE BIG
Driving Ford's new Tahoe and Suburban challenger
Jonny Lieberman Words | November 8, 2017
MotorTrend

Here is a MT 2018 Ford Expedition Review just posted!

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/ford/...-drive-review/

Jonny Lieberman's concluding words are definitive:

"For way too long, Ford allowed what should have been a perennial cash cow to rot out in the pasture. The old Expedition wasnít horrible or anything. It was simply not competitive with what Fordís big rival was selling. Ford has flipped the script. The Expedition is now the class leader, no ifs, no ands, and no buts about it. If you are a diehard Chevrolet fan, take solace in the fact that the new GMT1000-platform body-on-frame trucks and SUVs are coming sooner than later. Until then, Ford is the new big sheriff in town."

Re: 2018 Ford Expedition Reviews

"The Expedition? Wow, man, it blew the Chevy away. Acceleration was better, braking was way better, ride was superior, the engine note under full load was much deeper, much less harsh, and perhaps most important, the Expedition could easily maintain 50 mph up a good grade. Truth be told, it could do 20 mph faster. The transmission seemed to actually enjoy towing. Most shocking to me, however, was how much more elegant and comfortable the Ford was. I havenít set foot in the new Lincoln Navigator, but I have a hard time imagining how itís more luxurious than the Ford."

Re: 2018 Ford Expedition Reviews

"Although the outside might look like a mimeographed Suburban, the inside of the Expedition embarrasses the Chevy. The two are night and day, if Ford is day and night is cheap and looks dated."

High praise indeed for the interior. The pictures don't tell the story as well as sitting inside.

Ford makes the best Pick up truck, now makes the best SUV... why not try to make the best midsize sedan, too?

That's odd because all I have been hearing about on this site is how uncompetitive the new Expedition interior is compared to the Chevy and GMC.

I donít know, the tired old 400hp Fusion Sport is still killing it pretty good IMO, as far as style and power for the $$ goes, and even the Platinum is hard to beat for luxury value.
But yeah, upgrades are needed and certainly coming. Contrary to some myths, Ford is not abandoning the market.

you mean borg?
Well, to his credit (and our frustration), I don't believe he has sat in one. I have, and I concur with the evaluation.

Re: 2018 Ford Expedition Reviews

The Motor Trend review was very complimentary. Makes me want to test drive an Expedition even though it's far more vehicle than I need. Car and Driver wasn't nearly as flattering. (Sorry if this was posted elsewhere.)

"For all that, however, the Expeditionís new-school thinking doesnít pay the dividends we anticipated. Despite its aluminum body, the big Ford is still 100 pounds heavier than a comparably equipped 2018 GMC Yukon Denali, although, granted, the Expedition is longer and considerably roomier.

The Expeditionís EcoBoost V-6 powertrain is smooth and powerful, but the truck is virtually no quicker than the 6.2-liter V-8Ėpowered GMCóand the Fordís promise of improved fuel efficiency may be illusory. The Expeditionís 19-mpg combined EPA figure is 2 mpg better than the Yukonís, but its 22-mpg highway number is the same. And in our real-world 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, the Denali matched the Platinumís 20-mpg showing."

"If the Expedition is good at being a bus, it also handles a little too much like one. We didnít think it was possible, but the Expedition actually drives bigger than it is, while the Yukon and the Tahoe manage to drive considerably smaller. Yes, we know that attacking corners is not exactly a priority for buyers of big SUVs. But even in normal traffic the Expeditionís ponderous handling and disconnected feel demand more of your attention, and ease of driving counts in this segment. The F-150 is far less ponderous despite its solid rear axle and structure-reducing separate cab and box. The Expedition does ride smoother than the Tahoe and the Yukon Denali, however."

"Although the Expedition is roomy, comfortable, and well equipped, being inside of our Platinum test truck didnít feel like a cohesive, upscale experienceówhich it should have, considering that our fully loaded test truck stickered for an eye-watering $81,765. (The base rear-drive XLT model starts at $52,890; the Platinum starts at $73,905.) The Platinumís soft leather seats and handsome door panels are made of premium materials, but their effect is compromised by cheap-looking plastics elsewhereóthe clunky trim around the large HVAC dash vents is particularly egregiousóand a center stack that seems like itís out of a vehicle costing half as much."

More at the link below, including an out-of-place comparison to the Benz GLS Class. It's like they drove a completely different vehicle than the Motor Trend staff.

Re: 2018 Ford Expedition Reviews

I really don't understand all the "it looks like Tahoe/Suburban" comments. It really doesn't, aside from both being SUV shaped.

I have no idea where the GLS comparison comes from? So the vehicle is supposedly so terrible, yet they're comparing it to a Mercedes? And then trying to claim that the Mercedes is $6,500 cheaper? I blew past a loaded Expedition's price on the first options page of the base GLS trim. And to get as much power as the Expy, that GLS starts at $94K. I don't understand at all.

Re: 2018 Ford Expedition Reviews

I just looked up the credentials of the writer of the C&D (Rich Ceppos) article on Linked In. Although, the writer is a former Executive Editor of both C&D (1986-1991) and AM (1991-1995), the writer is listed currently as:

Manager, Advanced Concepts
GM
May 2007 – Present (10 years 7 months)

If the writer is still working at Ford Motor's primary competitor, it should not be so surprising he's writing such a totally unjustified and unflattering article about the truly remarkable new 2018 Expedition.
