The standard GT350 already has a significantly better lb/hp ratio than the Focus RS.
Adding AWD alone would add 200-300lbs.
Then add an additional 200lbs for power increase.

Then factor in the massive wide rubber that needs gobs more power to break loose.

Let's add ~200lb for AWD which is what compounds in the transition from Focus ST to Focus RS. Lets use the base weight of the GT350R since the 500 will no doubt utilize all of that weight saving. I don't know the powerplant, but for fun I'll give you that 200 pounds for the powertrain, but I think seems high.

So with that, were looking at 4100 pounds. At the "measly" GT350 power of 526 hp, it's STILL a hp per pound ratio of 7.79 hp/lb which completely shames the RS. Add in the fact that the GT500 will likely make ~650 horsepower, and we're at 6.3 lb/hp, which is well over 3lb/hp better than the RS. There is no rubber on this planet that will mitigate that massive difference.

Fair enough, you will be able to drift.
But, tires are a huge factor. Not just for the rear, but all 4. RS has skinny tires relative to a GT500. Calculate that surface patch total area, and 650hp will still have to have an extreme rear bias shift to drift, not unlike the RS.

If they were to go AWD with the GT500 I would rather they did it with the Ecoboost engine from the GT. I guess to my mind it would be a GTR killer, and a technological tour de force. Given they already have the GT I'd much rather see a boosted Voodoo engine in the GT500 with RWD, just my personal preference for more power, less weight!

Yes! However, we are only talking about the ability to drift, which really doesn't matter that much since 99% of the time these cars get sideways it was unintentional from inexperienced owners.

I want AWD for insane launches, all-year usability, and torque vectoring. I guess I just crave getting the power down without drag radials. RWD is fun, but with 650hp, to me it isn't.

See...as much as the new GT mill is certainly intriguing, Mustangs have a serious V8 history...including the most memorable Shelby examples.

With turbocharging finally nearing the promises so many carmakers made back in the 80's, and coming with less parasitic drag than blowers, I'm all for this. With the GT350 Chassis already having made waves, a further development with upped power is beyond intriguing.

Ford certainly is well aware of the legacy of Mustang, and I think that is at the forefront of all decisions they make.

Re: 2018 gt500 spied!!!

I highly doubt any Mustang would be AWD, let alone the GT500. That would add weight granted it was pointed out p:w would still be ok, but I hate the idea 4100 lbs Mustang. This current gen is too heavy as it is. GT500 will likely follow the same path as set by the GT350, but with more power. I'm more concerned with pricing as so we know whether the GT500 will be sold along side the GT350? GT350s in my area are already stupid price with seeing dealer markups ranging $30,000 to $50,000 for non R.

Excellent points.
It’s easy to forget the importance of price point. What good is a halo Mustang, if it’s priced ridiculously high, and they sit on lots awaiting discounts (recalling the $74K last gen Z28). Any engineer can throw mega cost and tech and engineering at a product to get the performance upper hand, while expecting customers to pay for it. But let’s not forget the roots of the vehicle. Price point is very important, and thus, so is value. I would be far more impressed if it came to market priced below the previous model. Learn from GM’s mistakes, and don't repeat them, learning that value engineering is what this breed is about, not brochure bragging points. These vehicles are already insanely over done in terms of performance. Fractions of a second matter, but not if it adds $10K or more to the price point.
