I guess this is the reason Ferrari put its turbos close to the engine, a compact layout.

I guess in theory they could put turbos on, but the easiest way to cram them in there would be to use heads with integrated exhaust manifolds. Still not convinced though that is what they did as the exhaust sounds the same as it does today. My experience in the past is when adding turbos to an engine they tend to quiet down the exhaust a bit.

Turbos need to be as close to the heads as possible, and also close to the catalytic converters. And yes, turbos are great for NVH, lowering exhaust sound. It is after all, an obstruction for outlet flow.
