Nope, cancel sedans all you want, keep S550 around for a decade plus, **** you Ford! I sure hope this is wrong as last I heard they were pulling the S650 forward a year, not back half a decade or more.

This seems ridiculous. The S550 will be pretty old by then. While it is a great car (biased as I own one), you cant just let stuff go that long or you end up with stagnant cars like Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus.

The article does make a case for keeping S550 Mustang around but it is not an automotive case, it's a business case. Ford is the master of long lead times since reduced R&D is supposed to enhance profits and make Wall Street happy (So why isn't Wall Street happy?). This article is more proof that Ford is an F-150 company since that is the only model that gets lots of R&D; the only model that technologically is ahead of its competition.

They're saying that Mustang will have to wait and that Ford will not strike while the CD6 iron is hot. By the time 2026 rolls around, the CD6 will be a relatively old platform; hopefully, it will be more tweak-able than CD4. This article states that CD6 is a SUV platform and that the next Mustang - whenever it appears - will have to be larger because of it. In that case, I still hold out hope that a 4-door Mustang - perhaps a REAL Thunderbird - might be considered in the future.

Ford will have to have the right strategy for their only image car, Mustang, since they appear to be convinced that "new, latest and best" is not needed to keep it ahead of its competition.

While I do agree with what you said on the most part, I do think Mustang should only be rear driven 2-door coupe and convertible. Rear drive or all wheel drive for Hybrid/Electric, future Shelby, etc. Hopefully the CD6 is flexible enough to be updatable for the many years enough so that the Mustang's switch to CD6 will be done successfully to be more up-to-date by 2026 or whenever and still be considered 'new'. The Mustang can be 2 door while Thunderbird can be true 4-door silhouette-ish vehicle. That way more vehicles can be spawned off CD6 and helps to amortize the costs of it.

The article says that withthe new platform it will grow to the size of the Challenger. It sounds like they should just make that the Thunderbird, and make (or borrow) a smaller new RWD platform for the Mustang.

Now you know that Ford is not going to do THAT. That was what the sh*t-canned S650 was supposed to be.

I think/hope that the article's speculation about increased size is just a guess, although the rare rear-seat Mustang passenger might have reason to be happy.

The only reason this seems like bad news is because we were told it would come in 2021. Realistically, and with how things have quickly evolved, I don't see a problem with this, especially if "In the interim, Ford will reportedly roll out a heavily revised version of the current S550-generation Mustang with new bodywork."

Mustang is being kept because of the will of the Fords, it's a heritage model and one that
still sells with a decent product mix, over 7,000 sales last month.


What surprises me is that people expect a platform change after five years, that's not happening
and 2019/2020 has a real 2009/2010 deja vu feel, so yes a heavily reworked body and continue
S550 with upgraded electrical systems and provisioning for Hybrid batteries.


The Mustang inspired BEV Utility and Bronco will probably drag more sales away from Mustang
and at some point way off in the distance Mustang will become a 2-door sports car version of the BEV
