Re: Mission2020: The RETURN of MERCURY!

looked up my LM pricelist for another thread today
and was struck by a(nother) obstacle to The RETURN of MERCURY...
...pre-owned Lincolns

with my Lincoln lineup priced primarily from $40-85k,
my $26-44k Mercurys would REALLY have to present a strong identity and not rely on pricing for their niche...

...tho naturally, *I* have no problemo with that

I still like your idea of Mercury coming back as the all electric brand with their own all electric dealerships. Let the Ford dealerships handle the hybrids and plug-in hybrid version of gasoline vehicles.

Mercury will build affordable C and C/D and D electric ultra light weight platforms for at least 6 models. Not one drop of gasoline in the lineup.

umm...
...
some of that is Your idea, Bloggin

my 8 Mercs (2 Bs + 3 Cs + 2(barely)&1 CD sized)
are ALL variously "electrified"...
...but
I still restrict pure BEVs to Lincoln as LuxoTOYs - for the foreseeable future (this decade imho)

Re: Mission2020: The RETURN of MERCURY!

^^ no suprise this got me rethinking powertrains...
...by going All EcoBoost PLUG-INS, greatly reduced their number
segment -- displacement -- HPs
puts more emphasis on the C-segment, which are now the only vehicles to get more than one drivetrain;
All with selectable Modes (like a Lexus perf-model, the engines can run in Atkinson, Nat.asp, AND turbo)
As before,
B = micro, microSport
C = Cortina, miniSport, and C3 with 'Capri' for just the hotter 3-door
C/D = Milan, metaSport(S-Max), and C5 < which, Only IF there's a Rwd version, might get the 'Cougar' Name ... or just stick with XR5
**
battery #s = pure guess = kWh / Ewd = only capacitors
edit^
think I had BEVs on the mind & those battery sizes are bigger than needed...
...even with planning the electrified HALF to literally be 50% of the powertrain
so maybe
B = 7.6kWh like other current FoMoCo plug-ins? ...then
C = 11.4kWh
C/D = 15.2kWh
altho... I would like the Mercs to have more battery than the Volt/ELR (16-something iirc)
( The original Volt's battery had a maximum capacity of 16 kW/h. Then in 2013 it got bumped to 16.5 kW/h. Now for 2015 it's 17.1 kW/h )
so maybe: 15.2 - 19.(1) - 19.(1) - 23(22.8) - 7.6/15.2/Ø?
to (significantly?) beat Volt's or ANY plug-ins' electric-range

** just occured to me this plan could simply use the electric motors from the Energis & FocusElectric:
118hp - 118hp - 143hp - 143hp - 118hp

edit
I *guess* LMoMoCo *could* add a Hybrid to the C-segment vehicles by stuffing the MKZ's antique drivetrain in them ...IF the 2.0Atkinson would fit in the minimalist engine compartment I'm envisioning
& IF anyone one besides me (aptdweller/no garage,outlet) would want one
(( the Cougar would be different forward of the firewall; with the front wheels pushed forward; & upto 4-5" longer overall ))

Re: Mission2020: The RETURN of MERCURY / A.M.P.!

(_____phase two_____)
made a fresh chart with the latest numbers
more thinking = more corrections = more simplifications

img] expired-attachmentid=13114&d=1427059996 [/img

batteries for the B-vehicles = double the current Energis, the C/D's = the current FocusElectric's, and the C's split the difference...
...allowing for the increasing inner space for battery storage;
& the sport-RWD going small for weight-control + only needing them for Front wheels

& now wondering if a "Hybrid" version could simply = no-or-very-small batteries & no plug-inlet/charger stuff?
but include an E-wd generator for unlimited Awd?
+ could the plug-in parts be added after-sale to convert a Hybrid to an Energi??

edit
decided to include an old chop from the original Mission:MERCURY!
that (still) fits my "XR5" pretty well

& crossreference: eLectrifying-Lincolns-/-reaching-higher™_phase one_

Hybrids for the C-segment models**
combine the higher power-range 3-mode 1.5atkinson/na/EB with the lower-powered 118hp Energi e-motor
& a much smaller 1.4,2.8,3.0kWh battery = 105/150/210+e118hp =total= 161/194/238hp
(using the current e-vehicles' approx. 72½% formula)
& leaving out the recharge plug & parts >> $24,170 (C-Max-H) plus $$ for the Mercury/AMP base-Lux features
( roughly in the $27-33k base-loaded range )

** the B models leave hybrids for the Ford Brand
C/D models to either/both Ford & Lincoln;
in keeping with the "tailored" Small Mercs Theorem...
...for the relatively few years left before Plug-Ins completely replace ordinary hybrids!

Re: Mission2020: The RETURN of MERCURY / A.M.P.!

was pondering hybrid modes, and wondering if since these Mercs' petrol-driven parts are separte from the electric-driven parts;
IF the sytem could be used as a "series hybrid" (generator only) as well as a "parallel hybrid" (petrol engine drives wheels as well as generator).
And IF this might increase mpg efficiency = running purely in Atkinson mode for start'n'stop (city/congested) driving as well as during low-load highway cruising?
Using thiss mode could dis-able the "Idle-Off" function to keep generating electricity with Atkinson-efficiency if the batteries are below a certain charge level.
And
assuming the Atkinson provides less HP than the electric motors, could provide sota/almost-free power?
ex: generating at 70hp but with an effective/available motive force of 118hp, or
generating at 100hp but with an effective/available motive force of 143hp
(using numbers ballparked in the previous chart)

making the bolded totals for the 3 proposed vehicles sizes, simply adding a module for each increase
and maybe allowing one 3.85kWh module be used for non-Plug-In Hybrid versions?
