Re: Mission2020: The RETURN of MERCURY!

(re)seeing Mazda's RX-Vision Concept in a TTAC article on fb led me back to the STARstang: the Beginning thread to see if I had a chop posted as I almost remember (not found yet)
meanwhile

My mantra for Lincoln is still Product Differentiation.
started wondering about keeping the STARstang sportSedan as the littlest Lincoln

but
going with Mercury for the Coupe as an authentic Cougar...

...gonna hafta ponder - might be a re-start for my Mission2020 rants

maybe just: Cougar / Capri / Mariner** / allroad-y nextgen S-Max?
** with MKC moving up to Macan-hood
...edit:
maybe an Electric S650 coupe would still be ok as a Lincoln? tho would hafta use some sportsedan sheetmetal
...

edit
- thinking S-Max is just too big
- thinking a sub-Mariner, not quite jeepish/bronco-ish
-
thinking about carbon fiber extended-cladding in place of wood-grain sticker

...actually-maybe ALL sheetmetal replaced with c.f but with just the roof and rocker-area exposed

while^pondering**, waiting for LAIAS, and jones'ing for some new speculations...

mission statement:
to exploit pricepoints, segments, and demographics less-consistent with Lincoln's goals & heritage

But the sales tell the real story. with the S90 barely able to move 200 units monthly. And this is after 5 months on sale. Volvo's primary sales niche was tied to safety, but Tesla took that crown away and raised the bar so high, there is no way Volvo can reach it with a big combustion engine in front of the driver.

Then there is the issue of the minimalist approach to a luxury car. The idea of paying more to get less is not working out well for Volvo, when so many luxury automaker are offer more for more.

maybe later today (hiding from reality )**...
...I can configurator-up the price range of the S90; But
just from pix-appearance (+ one new Xc90 I saw in RL),
Volvo points the way for Mercury/premium, not for Lincoln/Lux

tho my Merc would offer JustAbout everything the top-model Germans do...withOUT Options / maybe more

Subaru's Outback isn't just a "unicorn" because it's the only mainstream mid-sized go anywhere wagon, when you think about it, it's also the only mid-sized mainstream wagon in the USA period. The Golf Alltrack is too small, the Audi and Volvo wagons are too spendy. If you're looking for a quirky alternative to a RAV4 or CR-V, Subie's the only game in town.

Alex mentions a $16,000 difference between the Subbie and the Volvo V60-CrossCountry.
I wondering:
- about an $8k differential, and
- a 2.7T as well as
- a 1.5T- or 2.3T- Hybrid/Plug-In

That Outback outsells the Focus, Transit Connect and Edge.

It's wheelbase at 108.1 is just a bit longer than the next gen Focus/Escape that should be 106.3. With Ford's new interest in soft-roaders, and the buzz that the next gen Focus will have an AWD version(it should since the Escape does already and it shares the same platform), the next gen Focus wagon should be more of a competitor for the Outback globally.

Current Focus Wagon.

Which should look really nice once dressed up like the 20198 Fiesta soft-roader. But just noticed that Ford has not said anything about AWD with this model, when it's available with the 2018 EcoSport. Adding AWD with the Fiesta would be an initial step toward some of that AWD capable wagon market Subaru owns. I know when we go to the mountains to ski, Subarus are everywhere. Because people buy them and leave them at the cabin, to drive around when they get there.

Hatchbacks find new terrain in stagnant car market
The Detroit News

Ian Thibodeau , Feb. 10, 2017

Chicago— For all the talk about falling passenger-car sales, there is one market segment that is getting a shot in arm: hatchbacks...

...the IHS Markit forecasting firm sees a 19 percent hike in sales of small hatchbacks this year, compared with declines in 2015 and 2016. By 2020, it forecasts sales of 567,000, compared with about 453,000 sold in 2016; sales of small cars overall are expected to keep sliding.

“Hatch provides you the small utility of a (compact crossover), but yet the driving dynamics of a car,” Michael Evanoff, manager of product planning for Hyundai Motor America, told The Detroit News on Friday. “The number one purchase reasons for the company hatchbacks is that they’re fun to drive... It’s the best of both worlds.”

...“It’s almost like (crossovers) were the anti-minivan, so maybe we have something like that with hatchbacks,” Evanoff said...
...“I think the U.S. likes the functional thought,” she said. “The hatch for some people offers that without stepping up to that next level ... It really does fit what you need to do on a daily basis.”

The Hatch model accounted for 15 percent of Cruze sales for Chevy in January. A slight increase in sales came from customers who turned in crossovers and pickups for the Hatch, according to Malcho.

But Ford Motor Co., which has traditionally dominated the market with hatch options on the Focus, saw small-hatchback sales fall 21 percent in 2016 as customers jumped to SUVs. It’s the company’s “hot” hatchbacks — the high-performance Fiesta ST, Focus ST and Focus RS — that grew by over 21 percent, according to Ford.

“It’s not a hatch versus sedan story,” said Jeff Eggen, Ford’s small car marketing manager. “It’s a performance side... it’s really a source of strength for us right now, and it’s an area of small cars that is holding up well. This is a really unique area that an SUV can’t really deliver.”...

...But Stephanie Brinley(, senior analyst with IHS Automotive), said a successful hatchback can’t lean solely on performance models...
...“Hot” hatches help improve the design’s image, but these vehicles hit a sweet spot below SUVs that really seems to be the primary selling point.

“The cars are just so much better than they were, and it’s no longer a penalty (to drive a hatchback),” Brinley said. “It’s taking a while, but people are starting to understand.”

Re: Mission2020: The RETURN of MERCURY!

If I were to bring back Mercury now, I'd have them offer a raised AWD Mondeo wagon, a BMW x6 coupe like hatch off the Edge, and a raised AWD Focus Wagon.
