DaimlerChrysler to retain Jeep brand if Chrysler sold: report

FRANKFURT (AFP) - German-US auto giant DaimlerChrysler is considering holding on to Chrysler's four-wheel drive Jeep if it decides to sell its loss-making US subsidiary, the business daily Handelsblatt reported on Thursday.

Quoting company sources, the newspaper said that DaimlerChrysler was considering taking the Jeep brand out of Chrysler and holding on to it as an independent niche marque, should it come to a sale of Chrysler.

Chrysler's other brands include Dodge and Chrysler.

Handelsblatt said that experts believed the Jeep, of which 595,000 were sold last year, would fit better with DaimlerChrysler's up-market Mercedes brand

Well, at least we know they're not stupid. If this is true, I have to wonder who may want Chrysler/Dodge only and how much DCX could expect to get for it. One thing's for sure. DaimlerChrysler may well have to change it's name soon.

Or not.

Mercury is alive and well. It's called Lincoln.

I think Dodge is worth something if they focus on the same Market Kia Does.. and keep their truck market going.
I wonder if Mitsubishi might see value there. After all Chrysler Corp without Jeep is really not worth much.
Dodge and Chrysler do not have a global appeal like Jeep.

Chrysler and Dodge may go the way of Plymouth. Without Jeep C & D are just two redundant brands in an over populated market. The prediction made by Micheline Maynard is her book "The End of Detroit" about one of the big three going down before the end of the decade may prove to be true sooner than we'd wished.

I don't know that any automaker will either. For most automakers, I don't see the point of paying billions for Chrysler and Dodge and accepting all its debt and liabilities. It still seems like it could be worth it for a Chinese company though. Of course, I know very little about how to run a huge corporation, so I'm just basing that on the little I know!

At this point, only the Unions can save Chrysler in some sort of Employee ownership deal.
