FCA Proposes 50/50 Merger with Renault

[UPDATE, May 27] Renault has released another press release, saying that it has carefully reviewed the friendly proposal from FCA and has decided to "study with interest the opportunity of such a business combination, comforting Groupe Renault’s manufacturing footprint and creating additional value for the Alliance." Further details will be released "in due course."

Following yesterday’s somewhat surprising report about a potential merger between Renault and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the French company has just confirmed it has received a proposal regarding a 50/50 merger deal between the two companies. In a super short press release, the automaker reveals the Board of Directors will meet this morning and will discuss the proposal. A press release following this meeting will be issued and we expect this to happen in the next few hours.

“Groupe Renault confirms that it received a proposal from FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) regarding a potential 50/50 merger transaction between Groupe Renault and FCA. Renault’s Board of Directors will meet this morning to discuss this proposal. A press release will be issued following this meeting.”

According to Bloomberg, the two manufacturers are discussing “an operational tie-up that could lead to a full merger.” The publication believes that a partnership deal announcement should be made fairly soon but it won’t involve Nissan and Mitsubishi, at least initially. Interestingly, it is believed that Renault is negotiating with FCA without approval from either of the Japanese companies.

First rumors about a potential deal between Renault and FCA appeared in March this year following a report from Financial Times. Quoting unnamed sources close to the matter, the publication said a full merger could happen in the next 12 months or so.

It's interesting, but I think it'd have a far bigger impact in Europe than here in the States. Renault and Fiat could lessen a ton of redundancies with a merger by co-developing competing models...but neither is really a quality leader (unless Renault has improved grandly since I last looked) and poor ol' Jeep would still likely be the cash cow for the new conglomerate.

If GM can justify Buick, and if Honda can justify Acura, we can damned well have Mercury back.

Don’t forget Nissan...

Tons of opportunities everywhere for them to create one platform for their whole line up and just let the brand design the sheet metal and interior...think big (just one example)

Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, Mitsubishi Outlander, Renault Kadjar all sharing major components and engines!

I'm ok with this. Now would be interesting since in your example the Rogue and Outlander both use CVTs whereas the Kajar and Cherokee use regular autos. Plus the Cherokee has the available V6. Just would be interesting to see which way they go. Maybe this could signal the return of DSM lol.
