Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn recently held a press conference in Japan*regarding the Nissan/Renault-Daimer Benz partnership. In his statement, he said that the next 370Z may come with a Mercedes-Benz engine, he also said that the next-generation G and M cars will likely be built on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class platform. MB got exactly what they wanted out of the Chryco marriage... Freightliner. They threw a few bones Chryco's way in the form of old e-class components and transmissions to make some cars on the cheap that us dumb americans where to smart to buy. After that failure they threw the towel in not wanting to rebuild a company that has been failing since the early 80's took their "concession prize" in the form of Freightliner and dumped the carcass on some unsuspecting bankers. MB had there eyes on the prize all along and got what they wanted everything else was just theatrics, could not be to obvious about it and if they happen to make some money with Chryco even the better but not necessary. The longterm gains made with the portfolio of Freightliner brands will far out pace any losses in the Chryco marriage. This was nothing for than a marriage of convenience for MB to get there "green card"

MB already has a "jeep" its called the G550, having jeep would be redundant. Its not a big seller and a niche vehicle, in fact they almost stopped importing it after the GL came out. MB while not exactly all high-brow in europe wants to keep there high-brow image here in the states. Having jeep would have lowered that image unless they could have some how aligned it with Daimler and not MB here in the states. Freightliner/Jeep dealerships? lol. In reality aside from the wrangler jeep is in need of a line-up make over with all there not so jeep-ish vehicles ie: compass etc...
