Volkswagen aims to overtake Toyota by 2015

Volkswagen aims to overtake Toyota by 2015
Sat Sep 22, 2007 6:11am EDT

FRANKFURT, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Germany's Volkswagen aims to overtake Japan's Toyota as the world's number one carmaker by the year 2014 or 2015, the German industry magazine Auto Motor und Sport reported on Saturday.

"We want to overtake Toyota in volumes and by profitability," the magazine quoted Michael Kern, head of sales and marketing for the Volkswagen brand, as saying.

"In the next three years we are going to bring 12 new models to the market and we are going to expand our presence in the United States, Russia, India and other markets," Kern said.

Citing company sources, Auto Motor und Sport said Volkswagen's internal planning assumes that the company will surpass Toyota measured by production volumes in 2014 or 2015.

Re: Volkswagen aims to overtake Toyota by 2015

This I must say is laughable. Wishful thinking. For 1 Toyota is not sleeping. How do they intend to overtake Ford or GM, to beggin with. GM is growing fast, its Global reach and price advantage is enviable at this point. Ford is closely behind, Chrysler seems to be getting its act together, and the Americans seem to be finally getting their quality act together.
As for Volkswagen, their quality sucks, they lack design prowess, rehashing the same themes, their price points are higher, Heck they are having trouble keeping up with Opel, leave alone Chevy in Europe which is just exploding. They cannot touch European fords, (Modeo Vs. Passat anyone?)

They easily got clobarred by GM in China, after many years of a head start. Ford is right there behind them.
I am thinking Toyota's reign will not last 5 years, before Ford and GM make a come back.

hmmm
I have this 'impression' that since around the time of Bangle & Phaeton, All the German mfgs. are doing the same drugs...
sorry to use that analogy but that's how it feels imho - kinda irrational/deluded.

You do have a point. But just because VW is seen as some little insignificant carmaker in the US doesn't mean they are. VW (the VW brand alone) pushed 3,000,000+ (3,260,000) vehicles last year (not to mention: Audi-905,000 ;
Seat-408,000 ; Škoda-556,450; Total:5,129,450 ). Of course, they're still far from Toyota's
levels ( Toyota-9,020,000 ; Lexus-380,000 ; Scion-180,000) or GM
(Chevy-2,870,000 ; Caddy-241,500 ; GMC-260,000 ; Holden-140,000 ;
Opel-1,380,000 ; Pontiac-397,000 ; SAAB-132,000 ; Saturn-292,500 ;
Vauxhall-147,500 ; Buick-577,760; Total: 6,438,260[not counting Corvette or Hummer b/c their sales are negligable- about 100,000 combined]) but not Ford(which has done a good job with selling a lot of cars under the Ford brand: Ford-3,360,200 ;
Jag-75,000 [ouch!] ; Land Rover-180,000 ; Mazda-1,013,473* ; Volvo-430,000; Lincoln-122,700; Mercury-176,700; Total:4,648,641-incl 30% of Mazda[4,344,600 without Mazda]; *Mazda is 30% owned by Ford).
[Source: L'Automobile Magazine: Hors-série: Toutes les voitures du
monde 2007/2008]. Anyways, I think VW is taking the wrong approach.
They're going to come out with boring product like Toyota that will cut off the VW-faithful from the brand.
The bad thing is that they're German, so they're stubborn and won't
change their plan until it fails. Just my 2¢

They also just said that they want to be where Toyota is TODAY by 2010.

LOL. Keep dreaming. Ford and GM both have better chances of getting past Toyota than VW. Granted, they do well outside of the US, but with their quality record and pricing...they will take 10+ years just to get their perception where it needs to be to take on Toyota.

I tend to agree with you about the difficulty of achieving this goal, which in itself is ridiculous and wrong and will probably be back to bite them in the ass, lets say in . . . 2015. However, the "perception" problem that VW has is nowhere near as bad as GM's of Ford's.

VW has a lot of prestige left and that is a good foundation to build on. Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley (plus Skoda and Seat) are al very well respected and admired brands with a very well defined place in the market.

I agree. Ford and GM's perceptions are worse. However VW does not have the recognition or volume in North America to repair itself to Toyota's level...not in the amount of time they wish to.

Re: Volkswagen aims to overtake Toyota by 2015

GM's Chevy brand is the fastest growing in the world. We will see a #1 Ford or a #1 GM before we see a #1 Volkswagen.
Volkswagen has terrible quality. In Europe VW cannot touch Fords reputation for quality
