Ford-CAW: new global product + STAP to close

Ford-CAW accord seals plant closing, secures new product - AutoNews.com

Ford Motor Co. intends to follow through with the closure of its St. Thomas, Ontario, assembly plant and commit to new investments under concessionary contract amendments agreed to today by the Canadian Auto Workers union.

CAW President Ken Lewenza said the givebacks were necessary to align Ford's contract with givebacks provided to General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group earlier this year. Rank-and-file workers will finish voting on the deal by Sunday, he said.

As part of the accord, Ford agreed to put an undisclosed new global platform in the Oakville, Ontario, assembly plant at a later date, Lewenza said. Today, Oakville builds the Ford Edge and Flex and Lincoln MKX and MKT crossover vehicles.

St. Thomas will cease production at the end of 2011 as previously announced. The plant builds the Ford Crown Victoria sedan, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car.

“There no getting around it: We're losing about 1,400 jobs at St. Thomas, and we won't be able to make that up,” said Lewenza in a phone interview following a press briefing today.

Lewenza said the union and Ford would look to make room for some displaced St. Thomas workers through retirement incentives offered at Ford's other operations.

Ford also operates an engine plant in Windsor, Ontario, and a parts depot and some technical offices in Canada. Ford employs about 8,000 CAW-represented workers, Lewenza said.

Lewenza said the CAW bargaining committee unanimously approved the contract changes as did local plant CAW leadership brought in to review the details.

A Ford spokeswoman could not be reached for comment.

Lewenza said the new Ford-CAW agreement mirrors those of GM and Chrysler. Concessions include a wage freeze through September 2012, the elimination of one week of vacation, a freeze on cost-of-living until the fourth quarter of 2012 and higher health care co-pays for active workers and retirees.

Ford, CAW reach tentative deal that includes plant closing - DetNews

Last Updated: October 30. 2009 5:30PM
Bryce Hoffman / The Detroit News

...In exchange, Ford agreed to add additional work at its Windsor engine factory and committed to bring a new global platform to its Oakville Assembly Plant sometime after 2012. About 10 percent of Ford's North American production will remain in Canada, which is equal to its sales there.

In addition, the company agreed to a "good" severance package for workers at St. Thomas.

That factory, which produces the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car, has been slated for closure for years, but the CAW refused to give up on it -- until today. As The Detroit News has reported, it will close in September 2011 when production of those products ceases.

In addition to the 1,400 CAW members who work on the line there, union leaders estimate about 6,000 spinoff jobs at area suppliers will be lost as a result of the plant's closure.

"This is devastating for Canada," Lewenza acknowledged. But he said Ford will offer early-retirement packages to workers in Windsor and Oakville in a bid to create openings for younger workers from St. Thomas who want to stay with the company.

The only difference between the Ford deal and the one negotiated with GM and Chrysler is that Ford will not establish a union-run trust fund to pay for retiree health care.

"They didn't have enough cash," Lewenza said.

The company will continue to pay for such benefits directly.

Let's hope it's the GRWD platform .

I feel sorry for the men and women of St. Thomas plant . They build the most reliable cars with exceptional quality . I hope CAW and Ford save St. Thomas employees .

Thank you 2b2 .

The GRWD program is still alive?????? Ford need a RWD car platform to make this cars:

1- Australian sedans
2- Mustang
3- Premium RWD car for Lincoln
4- Sport sedan for Ford North America
5- A real sport and premium RWD sedan for Ford that can compete in Europe with some RWD sedans like BMW and Mercedes Benz. This car could be the same as Australian sedans and could be the same for North America, with especific details in the diferent markets.

This platform need, of course, all the technologies in order to keep the higth mileage : ecoboost I4 and V6, hybrids and electrics powerplants, ligth weigth materials.... And those cars dont need to be big, a medium size cars ( actual Fusion size) are enough.... Maybe with 2 wheelbases ( short for Mustang, Ford sedan for Europe and North America and base trim Australia's sedans; long wheelbase for Lincoln and Australia's top trim sedans).

And , why not, a new 2 door luxury personal coupe for Lincoln ( Mark rebirth ?) and Ford ( new Thunderbird? ).
