Fusion vs Taurus MPG - I was shocked!

This moring I dropped in to my Ford dealer for a quick oil change on my Freestyle. While waiting I was walking around the showroom and couldn't believe that the Taurus gets 28 mpg highway while the Fusion only gets 26 with the 3.0 V6!

Furthermore, the Taurus X get 4 miles less on the highway than the Taurus.

If the re-design is as good as we all hope, the Taurus is high on my shopping list.

Why is the Fusion's fuel economy numbers so low? I bet it must be better in real world driving condations

The new Taurus uses an updated D35 engine.
The outgoing Fusion uses the same basic Duratec 3.0L that has been around since 1994. They are about the same when you avg out city/hwy.

The new Fusion will be class leading.

But Wings, why such a big difference between the X and non-X?

Re: Fusion vs Taurus MPG - I was shocked!

I think a better comparison to the Fusion is actually the MKZ. Running the comparo on fueleconomy.gov it shows that the MKZ gets the same MPG as the Taurus (both FWD) at 18/28. Both have the same motor and tranny but I thought the Lincoln might do slightly better due to weight. I guess not, but close enough.

Oddly enough though, all 3 are listed at 21 combined even though the Fusion gets 18/26. I believe the Fusion is lighter than both so that and/or gearing may be the cause of that. Also, when comparing AWD versions the Fusion is the best of the 3 but not by much.

I am not certain, but if I were to guess I would say that the hundreds of extra pounds, bigger/taller profile punching through the wind and standard roof racks all contribute to hurting the hwy fuel economy. City is basically about the same.

Great data !

I believe that for 2009 the V6 Fusion switched to the same 6F50 transmission as the Taurus (or is that going to happen in 2010MY?). Do you know they uses the ratios in both vehicle ?

Re: Fusion vs Taurus MPG - I was shocked!

My '08 Sable FWD is good on gas especially on the highway I usually average about 17-19 MPG in the City and 29-31 on the Highway I'd say that's great considering the size and weight of the Sable.
